2022 NBA Finals: Stephen Curry, Warriors played the hits in Game 4 ... (CBSSports.com)

Nothing is easy against the Celtics, but a legendary Curry Flurry kept Golden State alive.

Curry said that, even though Golden State had a poor start offensively, the tone of the game was completely different from the previous one: "It wasn't a perfect first quarter, but we gave ourselves enough life." There were also Games 2 and 5 of the Finals, both in Toronto, both narrow, gutsy victories against an opponent that was ahead in the series and pulling out every defensive trick in the book. The Celtics' defense blends the best attributes of those Rockets (switchability) and those Raptors (intelligence). It has pushed Kerr to an uncomfortable place, where every lineup decision is a bet on Golden State either circumventing a spacing issue or scrounging up just enough stops to survive. That was its first experience on this stage, and it was down 2-1 against the Cleveland Cavaliers before it won three straight. Looney's layup turned a one-possession game into a two-possession game, and it deflated a crowd that was ready to explode. "The heart on that man is incredible," Thompson said.

NBA Finals 2022 - Why the Warriors and Celtics need their big men ... (ESPN)

The Finals could be determined by the availability and effectiveness of Draymond Green, Kevon Looney and Robert Williams III.

Kerr still had to make the call in the moment, and it was one of the best moves he has made in the series. If the same situation arises in Games 5 or 6 or maybe even 7, Kerr might have to do it again. He's gotten a bunch of baskets around the rim, shooting 13-of-18 as he gets putbacks and dump-offs when attention goes elsewhere. It has been working: After missing seven of the Celtics' first 14 playoff games, he has played eight in a row. Kerr made it sound like it was the plan all along to reduce Green's minutes; the power forward played a series-low 33. He had a playoff career-high 12 rebounds Friday. When he has been on the floor, the Celtics are +20 in the four games. Recovering from knee surgery late in the season and a bone bruise in his left knee, Williams' life has been all about playing and treatment on the knee for weeks. When he was on the floor in Game 4, the Celtics outscored the Warriors by six points. Then Kerr decided to play Green only on defense as much as possible in the final minutes, once even calling a timeout to take him out of the game. Then there's the brewing scenario with Green, who has been so limited on offense in these Finals that Williams will often guard him because it allows freelancing elsewhere. It was as simple as Green not playing well and the player he went to, Kevon Looney, was. The Golden State Warriors' coach had another big one with seven minutes left Friday in a vital Game 4 of the NBA Finals when he decided to pull Draymond Green out of the game.

Curry Scores 43 To Beat Boston, Warriors Tie NBA Finals 2-2 (KSL Sports)

Steph Curry scored 43 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 107-97 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.

Williams was listed as questionable coming into the game with the knee injury that kept him out at the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs. Curry’s foot was an issue coming into the night after Boston’s Al Horford landed on it late in Game 3. The amped-up crowd spent much of the game booing Green, chanting an obscenity at him that is usually reserved for Bucky Dent, and jeering his many misses. Curry was more demonstrative than usual, raising his arms after failing to get a foul call, interacting with the sold-out TD Garden crowd and flexing to celebrate a big Warriors basket. “The things he does, we kind of take for granted at times, to go out there and put us on his back. It was the second-most points he’s scored in the NBA Finals.

Inside The Box Score: 2022 NBA Finals, Game 4 (NBA.com)

Take a closer look at Golden State's 107-97 win over Boston in Game 4 to tie the Finals at 2-2 with a deep dive into all aspects of the box score.

• In each of the first three games of the Finals, Marcus Smart was matched up with Stephen Curry for the most minutes of any Celtic, followed by Derrick White each time. • Stephen Curry shot the ball better when he was contested (9-for-14, 64.3%) than when he was left uncontested (5-for-12, 41.7%) in Game 4. • Boston doubled up the Warriors on box outs in Game 4, 12-6. • The teams tied in loose balls recovered as every 50-50 ball is critical in the Finals. No play may have demonstrated that more than Jayson Tatum’s dive and slide across the sidelines to try to save a ball from going out of bounds. • No player was on the move more than Klay Thompson in Game 4 as he traveled just under three miles on the court with a game-high 2.97 miles. In Game 4, the Warriors had 14 screen assists for 38 points – the top two marks of the series. • The Warriors assisted on only half of their made field goals in Game 4, which is not only their lowest assist percentage of the Finals, but is also their lowest mark of the entire postseason. • Boston has finished with a higher free throw rate in three of the four games in this series. He not only made the same number of 2s and 3s, he was also assisted at the same rate on both shot types (42.9%). • The first three games of the series featured only 11 total seconds of clutch time – score within five points in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime – and that came in Game 1, when Al Horford made a 3-pointer with 4:49 to play in the game to put Boston up by six. Boston’s Jaylen Brown led all players with 12 points in the paint, while Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 10, followed by Andrew Wiggins at eight. • In Boston’s two wins in this series, it has shot 50.6% (Game 1) and 48.3% (Game 3) as a team, respectively.

Perhaps no player had a greater impact on this game for Golden State than Andrew Wiggins, who finished with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Having the ball late in the shot-clock and being assertive is what will win Boston this series. Stephen Curry put on an absolute show in this game and no matter if he was wide-open, heavily contested or being fouled, everything Curry seemed to put up went in, especially in the second-half. Through four games in the 2022 NBA Finals now, Curry is averaging 34.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and is shooting 49.8% from the floor, 49.1% from three-point range. Andrew Wiggins is a perfect example of this. - Draymond Green's Amazing Quote About Steph Curry After Game 4: On Friday, Draymond Green met with the media after the Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics by a score of 107-97 to take Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Warriors show Celtics how hard it is to win an NBA title: 'It's not going ... (USA TODAY)

The Boston Celtics had a chance to seize control of the NBA Finals in Game 4 at home but couldn't close out the Golden State Warriors.

Up 3-2 against Miami in the conference semifinals, Boston failed to finish the series at home in six games and had to win Game 7 on the road. Miami is a team that we went and did it against. But Boston didn’t cough up Game 4 as much as Golden State won it with offensive and defensive execution in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter. The Celtics played in back-and-forth series ever since sweeping Brooklyn in the first round. It's a championship-caliber opponent that's not going to lay down. Golden State forced missed shots and turnovers and was 5-for-7 from the field with two big 3s from Curry and Thompson. Golden State coach Steve Kerr made the right substitutions, even sitting Draymond Green during a key stretch, and Curry, Thompson, Green and Andrew Wiggins made winning plays. “As much as we'd like to do better on our own, you've got to give them credit for how they stepped up defensively. “We had our chances … It's not only solely dependent on one team. Curry had a game-high 43 points on Friday – the second-highest scoring output of his Finals career. I think that's kind of the beauty of it, that it's not going to be easy. It shouldn't be'

NBA Finals MVP Ladder: Stephen Curry vaults to No. 1 with electric ... (NBA.com)

Could it be anyone else? Golden State's sharpshooter goes off for 43 points and seven 3-pointers to continue his torrid Finals.

In Game 4, his 13 defensive rebounds helped the Warriors limit the Celtics to 12 second-chance points, compared to his own team’s 19. Thompson and Curry (18 points) nearly outscored the entire Celtics roster (19 points) in the fourth quarter as they combined to hit 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep. Thompson joined Curry and Green in winning 19 career NBA Finals contests to match San Antonio’s Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili for the most Finals victories by any trio over the last 50 seasons. But of course, we’ve still got to let this play out on the court as we step back into the thick of this dogfight of an NBA Finals on Monday at Chase Center. In the second half of the first four games, Tatum is minus-19 while averaging 8.3 points on 26.5% from the floor and 21.4% from 3-point range. Usually aggressive, Brown took his first shot of the night with 7:31 left in the opening quarter and finished with just two points before scoring 10 in the second quarter. In Game 3, Boston crushed the Warriors on the boards (47-31) with the forward producing just seven rebounds in a 116-100 loss. In doing so, he became the first Golden State Warrior since Nate Thurmond in 1967 to finish with at least 17 points and 16 rebounds in an NBA Finals contest. “Wiggs has done what he’s done all playoffs: make it tough for the opposing starter to score” Warriors forward Draymond Green said. “I just know last game they had outrebounded us and got all the offensive rebounds,” he said. That just carried over into a 14-point third quarter, then an uber-efficient final frame as Golden State embarked on a 17-3 run over the final five minutes. “To go against Boston, you’ve got to deal with Tatum and Brown, and they are just powerful, skilled players.

Stephen Curry Is Changing The Perception Of The NBA Finals MVP ... (Forbes)

Over the first four games of the 2022 NBA Finals, Stephen Curry has outplayed any other Finals MVP candidate by immense stretches.

Over the next two-to-three games, percentages can of course even out. Klay Thompson, Golden State's second-leading scorer in the Finals at 17.3 points, is hitting just 35.8% from the field, and an uncharacteristic 34.2% from the outside. As mentioned before, the Finals MVP award winner almost exclusively plays for the winning team. However, James usually had significant competition from the winning teams, with both Curry and Kevin Durant offering up their own MVP-worthy series. The team remains led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, but neither have produced at a level that even remotely comes close to Curry. Tatum has played superbly defense and expanded his game into becoming his team's best playmaker, averaging 7.8 assists for the series, but has hit just 34.1% from the field. Certainly, Curry is worth at least equal consideration as James in previous years, if not more. It's taken him 82 shots to reach his total of 89 points, which for a player of his caliber is severely underwhelming. Stephen Curry has been head and shoulders above everyone else over the series' first four games, averaging 34.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.8 steals. After four games of this series, however, there's a legitimate debate as to whether or not that trend should continue for 2022. Andrew Wiggins, third on the team in scoring at 16.5 points at night, is converting at just 43.3% overall, and at 31.8% from range, further underlining a dip in efficiency from some of the team's primary scorers. Brown has been better in terms of shooting percentages, hitting 44.0% from the field, and a decent 35.5% from the outside, but those percentages are somewhat pedestrian, and certainly entirely incomparable to those of Curry's. His 22.3-point average in the series, which is the exact same point average as Tatum, just pales in comparison to Curry as well. The best of the best

But his playmaking in response to the Warriors' over-helping has been instrumental for most of the series. Jayson Tatum cannot hit a two to save his life and is too often forcing the action inside the arc. The Warriors fumbled a monumental opportunity in Game 1, suggesting they're at the mercy of themselves, yet their absolute offensive dependence on one player makes it seem like they're the ones operating on borrowed time. Giving the Bill Russell Trophy to someone not also being crowned a champion has a stigma attached to it. But the hypothetical feat is a gargantuan ask. The very idea of Steph is in itself among the NBA's most effective offensive weapons. The inconsistent play of Steph's supporting cast, most notably Draymond Green, leaves the team very much in the lurch. Just as Golden State has increasingly abandoned any pretense that anyone else will finish its half-court possessions, Boston showed a willingness to deviate from the script more often in the final frame of Game 4. This series only reinforces the overarching value Steph injects on his own. And with each passing hang-it-in-the-Louvre display, the Warriors come to rely on Steph's individualism when it matters most even more, while the Celtics are invited, if not outright forced, to overreact. Asked where he'd put tonight's performance on the list of great Stephen Curry Finals performances, Klay Thompson said, "I think probably No. 1. Sure, his latest detonation is part of the bigger picture.

"One of the things that I do in the playoffs is I remind our group that, hey, we were really good with non-basketball moves this year, right? "If someone is .0008 separated in our matrix, we talk it out as a group. One was an out-of-bounds in the backcourt where we give them the ball as soon as they're ready, and the other had some element of small confusion because there was a defensive three [seconds] involved, so it didn't get announced. In my career, we were waiting on that mandatory timeout to go review it ourselves as referees on the floor. Secondarily, if we did it in live action and just took points off without announcing it, you could well imagine the confusion that would take for the team to look up and think that they had three points without understanding why they don't have three points and then arguing about it during live action. Because that's one of the criticisms that you always hear: 'Oh, they won't call it in the playoffs.' I think we've proven [that criticism wrong] over the past several years. "We understand that there is a point of no return. We most certainly can get that play called correctly if it is clear and conclusive, but it must be tied proximate to the play. We noticed one season and postseason that we were incorrectly calling a lot of off-ball fouls as someone was shooting.
