Rise of the nice guy: Andrew Wiggins erases rare Curry dud in NBA ... (The Guardian)

The former No 1 overall pick has long been accused of failing to fulfill his potential. But he was crucial to the Warriors taking a 3-2 series lead.

In total the Celtics committed a fatal 18 turnovers to the Warriors’ six. But on Monday at Chase Center he was merciless, impassioned, effective and emphatic as the Celtics lost back-to-back games for the first time in this season’s playoffs. The defining image of this game was not Curry sinking a shot from distance but Wiggins bustling to the basket and crashing down a dunk to hand the Warriors a 15-point lead with about two minutes remaining. Not to mention family bragging rights: his father, Mitchell, was on the Houston Rockets team that lost to the Celtics in the 1986 finals. But it was the all-round excellence of Andrew Wiggins that helped disrupt the visitors while ably compensating for Curry’s below-par production. Curry followed his 43-point Game 4 genius-storm with a tepid 16-point effort, the presumptive NBA finals MVP an inconceivable zilch-for-nine from beyond the arc.

Warriors vs. Celtics: Nine plays that explain Golden State's pivotal ... (CBSSports.com)

In the first four games of the NBA Finals, Golden State progressively tilted its attack toward Curry running high pick-and-rolls. It started Game 5, however, ...

It's a great read by Curry with Smart top-locking him, and it's another perfect pass from Green. But it's also an example of the Warriors getting used to their opponent -- they know that Williams is ignoring Payton, which makes him a dangerous screener. (In fact, he missed all six of his 3-point attempts.) When Curry was cold and the team needed him to bail out a possession, he obliged. In this case, that means Green pushing the pace when the Warriors don't have the numbers and sending a bounce pass exactly where it needed to go to turn a 2-on-3 break into two points -- at exactly the right time. With nine minutes to go and the Warriors on a 13-0 run, Marcus Smart ran a dribble-handoff with Brown way outside the 3-point line. Curry looks at Wiggins after the pass, first pointing at Thompson and then calling for the ball himself. Because the Warriors had nine steals to Boston's two, and five of those Golden State steals led directly to buckets on the other end. After hearing Boston lament its "stagnant" late-game offense in the previous game, this was a tough look. This is my favorite of Curry's eight assists, and it demonstrates why the Celtics have been reluctant to put two on the ball against him. He gives the ball up to Green, who fires a lefty pass to Klay Thompson on the opposite side. Tatum got into the paint with good spacing around him, collapsed the defense, made Andre Iguodala think he was passing to Jaylen Brown in the corner and hit Horford for an open 3. Scoring against the Celtics is exhausting, and they believe that, if they are locked in and limit their mistakes, the opponent will eventually wear down. The Celtics have done a fantastic job defending Golden State's off-ball actions, but that doesn't mean coach Steve Kerr is going to default to static pick-and-rolls.

The Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics face off on Thursday at TD Garden in Boston in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

Golden State is the all-around better team and I expected a bounce-back performance from Curry to help them secure an NBA Finals victory. Devon Platana writes: "After winning back-to-back contests, I expect the Warriors to close out the Celtics in Game 6. The prediction and odds for this game also favors a win for the Celtics." It writes: "For the Celtics, the Game 6 becomes a do-of-die game. It predicts that the total will go over. They sure have the manpower to do so, not to mention that their fans will cheer them on from the very start."

The key moment came in the third quarter when Thompson connected on a three after the Warriors had missed 14 straight efforts, and it allowed the five-time All-Star to find his rhythm for the remainder of the contest. On the other hand, the Warriors overcame an awful shooting display in the first half (17% from three) to play with more composure in the second half - and it paid dividends. Al Horford hit a huge go-ahead three-pointer with 6:28 left in the quarter that made it 58-55 as the Celtics appeared to finally find their shooting rhythm from deep. Ultimately though, other Warriors outside of Wiggins stood up amid Curry’s struggles as he failed to make a three in an NBA game for the first time since November 8 2018. Curry finished with 16 points and eight assists, but Wiggins was undoubtedly the star man for the Warriors in Game 5 as the Canadian produced a terrific all-round display that highlighted his prowess in scoring, defending, and rebounding. In a crucial NBA Finals contest, Wiggins duly delivered the biggest performance of his eight-year career as he dropped 26 points and collected 13 rebounds.

Thairo Estrada hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth and Brandon Crawford doubled in a pair, lifting the Giants to their fourth straight win and sixth in eight games. Brad Miller grounded an RBI single through a drawn-in infield for the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Texas Rangers beat AL West-leading Houston 5-3 for their third consecutive victory. Santiago Espinal had two hits and drove in three runs as the Blue Jays pounded a season-high 19 hits, including seven in a seven-run fifth inning. The Padres won for the fifth time in their last seven games. Marcell Ozuna and Adam Duvall launched back-to-back homers for the defending World Series champions, whose winning streak is the longest in the majors this season. Brandon Drury hit a tying three-run homer in the fifth inning, Mike Moustakas added a go-ahead single in the sixth and the Cincinnati Reds rallied past the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 Monday night. Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins graded in Warriors win over Celtics (Golden State of Mind)

He also was targeted time and time again on defense and, unlike Curry, rewarded Boston for that approach. His offense was crafty. His defense was relentless. Looney got into foul trouble immediately, picking up three fouls in his first three minutes on the court. Bjeli didn’t get much of an opportunity in this game, and what little time he got was with a pretty poor and funky lineup on the court. His defense didn’t get the credit that other players’ did, but it was still very good. He had a strong defensive game as Boston targeted him all night. Because not only did they prove that they can win without an excellent Chef Curry game, but he’ll be something special going forward. It was just the 40th time in his career that he’d gone a game without making a three. Porter got his second straight start and, for the second straight game, he didn’t do all that much. I often say in this space that the Warriors offense functions better when Green is being aggressive. And let’s be honest: we all knew it was coming.

Boston, on the other hand, looked daunted and suffered a second consecutive defeat for the first time in this postseason. He had 14 points on the night and renaissance man Gary Payton II, who fractured his elbow just a month before the NBA Finals started, was also a big contributor in Game 5 with 15 points and 5 rebounds. As for Wiggins, who has been the Dubs' second-best player in the series by a distance, he had multiple highlight plays. Tatum looked like he was on the cusp of his best performance of the finals for a spell in the third quarter but he undid that work with some poor decisions and on two separate occasions, the 24-year-old missed both free throws after being fouled. Curry, for his part, failed to make a three-pointer in an NBA game for the first time since November 8, 2018. Andrew Wiggins was the star man on this occasion, impressing with his scoring, defense and rebounding in a magnificent all-round display.

Boston started the game by missing its first 12 3-point tries, then made its next eight from beyond the arc, a dichotomy the likes of which has never before been seen in NBA Finals history. The 48-18 run by the Celtics to turn a 15-point third-quarter deficit into a 15-point fourth-quarter lead in Game 1. Curry scoring 43 points, even yelling at the crowd along the way, to lead Golden State to a road win in Game 4. The 35-14 third quarter that the Warriors turned into an easy win in Game 2. Such has really been the story for Boston most of the way in these playoffs. “We have a chance. It looked easy early for his team in Game 5, with the Warriors up 16 before long and taking a 12-point lead into halftime. Such has been the story of these NBA Finals — the guys with more fight walk off winners. The way the Celtics wasted a big lead, then outscored the Warriors 34-17 to close Game 3. That’s the thing we’re not having throughout a full game, consistent efforts, sustained effort, more so offensively than anything.” It’s Golden State 3, Boston 2 going into Game 6 on the Celtics’ home floor on Thursday night. But that’s more a byproduct of two teams with a propensity for cranking up defense when they must, more than lackluster offense.

Golden State finds a way to secure a 3-2 lead in the NBA Finals even though Stephen Curry goes without a 3-pointer for the 1st time in his playoff career.

After all, Thompson described Curry as “a magician with the ball in his hands.” In Game 5, Curry observed that the Celtics “were a little bit more aggressive and a little higher-up on their pick-up points.” Following the Warriors’ season-opening win against the Los Angeles Lakers, he described his performance as “trash” after a 5-for-21 shooting performance. “Looking forward to that bounce-back.” “That’s a good thing, because Thursday, hopefully, most of the time, he regresses to the mean. “The rest of the game has to show up so that you can still make an impact and still draw enough attention offensively, even if you’re not making shots. He’s been shooting the ball so well that, at some point, he was going to have a tough night,” Kerr said. On a night that he didn’t have it going, we found offense elsewhere.” It would be a stretch to say that Curry lacked a reliable supporting cast. “Steph is the best to ever shoot it,” Thompson said. He finished with 16 points while shooting 7-of-22 from the field and 0-of-9 from 3-point range, which marked the first time in his 13-year NBA career that he failed to make at least one 3-pointer in a playoff game. The Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics 104-94 in Game 5 of the 2022 NBA Finals on Monday to take a 3-2 series lead heading to Boston for Game ...

Just to put this in perspective, Golden State scored 100 total points in their Game 3 loss and they only scored 104 points in Game 5, which ended up being a 10-point victory. Entering Game 5, the Boston Celtics have gone 14-2 in the playoffs when they had 15 or less turnovers in a game. While his numbers have not been terrible, Jayson Tatum has been held in check for a vast majority of the series because of Wiggins’ on-ball pressure and his length. That’s 29 total rebounds for a wing, not a big man, over the course of two games against a team that ranked fifth in rebounding during the regular season! Turnovers directly correlate to losing and any good team or any competent basketball mind can tell you this. Leading by one point entering the fourth quarter, the Warriors were having flashbacks to their second-half collapse in Game 1 of this series on their home court. Constantly attacking the Celtics defense, regardless of who was guarding him, the former No. 1 overall pick and All-Star forward finished Game 5 with 26 points on 12-23 shooting and 13 rebounds, his second-straight game with a double-double. In the third quarter, Boston shot 6-8 from three-point range and they made eight consecutive threes at one point dating back to the end of the second quarter! Wiggins has been arguably the most important and best defender in this series, he has been arguably the second-best offensive talent and he has been arguably the best rebounder in this series. Okay, hold on a second. The key word here is “were,” as all good things come to an end at some point. The Celtics looked absolutely gassed in the fourth quarter after giving it their all to get back in this game in the third and Wiggins took advantage of this.

Golden State leans on its supporting cast in Game 5, cranks up its defensive intensity and moves to the doorstep of an NBA title.

On the possession before the Payton steal above, Wiggins entered the ball into Looney in the post and set the standard screen for Curry to curl toward the ball. Midway through the fourth quarter, Tatum set a screen for Marcus Smart and got the Curry switch. Like the Warriors did with White on Monday, the Celtics have targeted Curry throughout the series. At times, the Celtics have been able to punish Green for zoning up in the paint. The two guys ahead of the 6-6 Green and the 6-9 Williams are 7-0 Brook Lopez and 6-11 Deandre Ayton. And on Monday, Draymond Green was particularly strong in preventing Boston from converting at the basket. White was immediately subbed out, but he was back as the Celtics went super-small (no Horford or Robert Williams) with three minutes to go. The last two games account for two of the nine times this season (94 total games) that Wiggins has had more than 10 drives, according to Second Spectrum tracking. In the biggest game of his life, Wiggins wanted the ball. Jordan Poole went to set a screen for Curry, but Curry remained in the right corner, seeing what was happening under the basket. With Iguodala looking for somebody to pass to, Andrew Wiggins went to get the ball and held off Derrick White to catch Iguodala’s entry pass. As noted in the wake of Game 5, this series has been mostly about Boston’s end of the floor.

No, the Golden State Warriors' 2022 NBA Finals Run Is Not Unfair (Bleacher Report)

At various points over the past eight years, the Golden State Warriors have played—and text tk Unless otherwise noted, stats courtesy of.

Looney has gone from oft-injured and playing in shorter spurts to the third-best Warriors player in a damn Finals series. News flash, though: No matter how good the Warriors have been and continue to be, they are not unfair. And just to get out in front of this: The Warriors also aren't here, on the precipice of another title, thanks to some generally inaccessible, stroke-of-genius gap year. Curry is still a top-five player at the age of 34. But it is far more logical than the aspect of fandom in which we're conditioned to care about how on earth billionaires can afford certain roster moves. Oh, and how do they pay for all this?

They make money, hand over fist because they built their own arena — with private (loaned) funds — off the back of their success in Oakland.

Profits on the court. They were in a position to sign KD because the league infused all of its new TV money into the salary cap at once rather than bake it in over time. Location limitations are a separate dilemma, a problem that warps the opportunity to acquire stars outside the draft. Big. Freaking. Whoop. Golden State still needed to finagle itself within the confines of the hard cap to make that happen, which materially impacted its roster and asset chest.
