F1 eyeing 2023 Kyalami return but Spa may drop off calendar - The ... (The Race)

The South African GP could be part of a potential 24-race 2023 F1 calendar, though the Belgian GP at Spa may not be part of that.

But the race has not been an ever-present and Spa itself has been dropped several times, most recently in 2003, while it was also absent from the 2006 calendar as repair works could not be completed in time for its September slot. Getting Shanghai back on the calendar is proving difficult as the country is still impacted by the pandemic and it has previously been suggested that this may thwart a Chinese round in 2023. It has been suggested it will take a few more weeks before an agreement can be reached but the intention is for South Africa to be on the 2023 calendar.

There have been attempts to usher the world of formula racing back into the South African landscape, with Formula E being heavily relied on as the defacto way forward. The entire situation has been kept under wraps as Demonicali’s trip to SA wasn’t publicly announced and a final agreement has yet to be reached. Aside from the addition of Africa to the F1 race calendar is a push to Asia which, much-like Africa, presents itself as a location with a lot of potential and benefits for the introduction of F1 races.

F1 needs to return to Kyalami, but an historic circuit is set to lose out (Motor Sport)

F1's imminent return to South Africa signals its intent to engage new markets, but could come at the cost of other much-loved venues, writes Chris Medland.

The current agreements only allow F1 to incorporate 25 races into any one season, and the French Grand Prix is set to host its final race of its current deal this summer. There is still no certainty that a race can be held in Shanghai post-Covid and without its return then there could be room for Belgium to remain. Monaco’s position is also uncertain as F1 is unhappy about certain aspects surrounding the running of that event, but the intention is for there to be an extension of some sort signed.
