Indian Premier League's Jaw-Dropping $6 Billion Broadcast Deal ... (Forbes)

Test cricket - even though the ICC and its all-powerful board remain determined to protect the primacy of the long format - will almost surely be played by just five or six countries in the not too distant future. There is a steady increase in games over the next cycle in the 10-team IPL, which expanded by two sides in its most recent edition. We have World Cups coming up, that's a priority with us. “We just can't afford Test cricket. But Barclay, who admittedly shouldn’t have come across as so defeatist, was merely parroting what many in and around the ICC have accepted. After such a monster deal for a league still in its infancy, with this likely the tip of the iceberg, close observers are bracing for the IPL to eventually start mimicking the major leagues in the world and be played over a much longer time span.

Indian Cricket Broadcast Rights Fetch a Record Price (The New York Times)

The auction cemented the league's position among the world's most valuable sports properties, as a once-staid game has become a commercial juggernaut.

Disney-owned Star India paid $2.09 billion for television and digital broadcasting rights in a five-year deal that ended this season. The N.B.A. and the English Premier League have expanded their businesses through a broader appeal, with sales of global television rights now a cornerstone of their growth strategies. Mr. Ambani owns the league’s most valuable team, the Mumbai Indians, which has won five titles and is valued at $1.3 billion. In recent years, broadcast subscriptions have jumped by millions of new viewers, pulling in huge advertising revenue. In 2013, an investigation into illegal betting resulted in two teams being suspended from play for two seasons. Its founder, Lalit Modi, fled the country after being dismissed in 2010 over financial irregularities. The deal consists of two major parts, one being television rights for the Indian subcontinent, which Star India, the local Disney subsidiary, purchased for $3.02 billion. The I.P.L., however, has attracted foreign investor interest, with wealthy sports owners and private equity companies drawn to its rising profile and skyrocketing television deals. Well-known figures like Mr. Ambani and the Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan began to buy franchises. At the time, it was a highly contentious move in a sport that cherished tradition. Even as the league’s broadcasting rights have become a rich source of revenue for the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the board has been dogged by scandal. Pradeep Magazine, a longtime sports editor and a historian of cricket, said the league had made the Indian cricket board one of the richest sports regulatory bodies in the world.

There’s every chance that when the IPL rights are big on again in 2027 the USA could be a major growth area, should the MLC venture see success, and non-traditional fans begin to buy into the sport. However, this next deal could just be a litmus test for the swelling popularity of the largest global cricket league, and we could see movement in the next deal. On Tuesday, the IPL announced its new broadcast partners for 2023-27, and with it a staggering $6.2 billion price tag.

“The BCCI will utilise the revenue generated from IPL to strengthen our domestic cricket structure starting from grassroots, to boost infrastructure and spruce up facilities across India and enrich the overall cricket-watching experience,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said. The franchises and state associations stand to benefit proportionately, based on the current revenue sharing formula. As per the last revision, it was around ₹30 crore per association. It is Indian cricket that stands to benefit the most from the league’s riches. The players would be keenly awaiting such a move from the Indian board. With IPL’s media rights valuation - ₹48,390 crore - having trebled from the last five-year cycle, expect player salaries also to be revised.

The thought of wanting to go back and play cricket gave me the fighting spirit to beat cancer. I beat cancer because I wanted to play cricket,” the 21-year-old told Cricbuzz.

England have had a spectacular start to life under McCullum and the bad news for the rest of world cricket is that this is still early days in the evolution of “Bazball”. As Bairstow notes: “It’s not the finished article. It’s only been two weeks and that’s going to develop and evolve over a period of time. “I knew our mindset was always going to be all about winning and at no stage was it ever going to turn into a draw from our point of view. Broad also gave an insight into the first two tenets of “Bazball”, saying: “It does feel really fresh and exciting in the changing room. Whoever is to come, the changing room has full belief you can get the win.” Yet to take a similar mindset into Test cricket, where players are at the mercy of varying conditions over five days, is another thing altogether.
