US Open begins with Rahm, McIlroy set for early charge (News24)

"Everything is certainly trending in the right direction," McIlroy said. "Getting the first major is a big weight off my shoulders," Rahm said. The US Golf Association chose not to follow a PGA Tour ban of 17 golfers who played in last week's LIV Golf debut in England, staying faithful to this year's US Open qualifying standards.

Phil Mickelson in jeopardy of missing cut at U.S. Open after carding ... (ESPN)

Phil Mickelson struggled in the first round of the U.S. Open, carding an 8-over 78. He's tied for 144th place.

Mickelson was playing in the U.S. Open after being indefinitely suspended by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan a week ago. Mickelson has been runner-up at the U.S. Open a record six times. "I really enjoyed the test; I think it's just a spectacular golf course," Mickelson told reporters in the players' parking lot after the round. But then Mickelson yanked his tee shot into the thick rough on the right side on No. 12, needed two shots to get back to the fairway and carded a double-bogey 6 to drop to 7 over. Mickelson was one of 17 tour players who competed in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series event in London without a conflicting-event release. Playing for the first time in the U.S. since missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, Mickelson had bogeys on three of the first five holes and then four-putted from 12 feet for a double bogey on the par-3 sixth.

BROOKLINE, Mass. — MJ Daffue stepped to the lectern inside the interview area behind The Country Club's massive yellow clubhouse and shielded his eyes from ...

As a career grinder, the 33-year-old is a regular on the Monday-qualifying circuit — and he’s become quite comfortable with playing for his livelihood. “It really taught me to make a lot of birdies.” “Now I’ve finally this week probably started feeling the freedom,” he said. “I didn’t want to skip a week,” Daffue said. If he’d teed it up in the Wichita Open instead of the U.S. Open, he would’ve almost certainly garnered enough points for a Tour card. He competed in last summer’s U.S. Open after advancing through a qualifier, and ultimately made the cut, finishing T57. But he had to skip a KFT event to do so. He made the right call. As a Korn Ferry Tour pro, he was focused on trying to lock up his PGA Tour card. The even more unlikely reason for Daffue’s media appearance is that he didn’t even plan on being here a month ago. But the week before U.S. Open final qualifying, Daffue finally summited the mountaintop. Suddenly, a run at the U.S. Open was back in the cards. These are the calculations up-and-comers have to make when the U.S. Open comes around each year.

"Sixty-six at a U.S. Open to take the first-round lead is incredible," Hadwin said. Dahmen made birdie at three of the four par 3s. Hadwin compiled five birdies in a six-hole stretch to make the turn at 4-under31. Ranked No. 445 in the world, the 32-year-old has never won on the PGA Tour or DP World Tour. He couldn’t save par on that one and had to accept a 67 — not a bad start, and no apologies for his few outbursts of emotion. But now it’s time for golf, and there a vibe of relief that focus could turn to a U.S. Open that first came to Brookline more than a century ago. No other major is more open — roughly half the 156-man field has to qualify — and it showed. For McIlroy, it was his second straight major — and third time in his last four U.S. Opens — he opened with a score under par. Even with a good start, and coming off a victory last week in the Canadian Open, it doesn’t figure to be easy for McIlroy or anyone else. He hit that into another bunker, and then twice slammed the club into the sand out of frustration. Nick Taylor, also from Abbotsford, was tied for 79th at 3-over 73 and Roger Sloan of Merritt was 6-over 76 to finish the day tied for 79th. “It’s hard not to get frustrated because I’m walking up there going, ‘Just come back into the bunker.’ The thickest rough on the course is around the edges of the bunker. His previous low score in a major was 68 on three occasions, most recently the first round of the 2020 PGA Championship at Harding Park. “You’re going to encounter things at a U.S. Open, whether they be lies or stuff like that, that you just don’t really encounter any other week,” he said. Thursday was a reminder he’s pretty good at his day job, too. But yeah, in certain instances it definitely felt a little more relaxed than last week.”

2022 U.S. Open scores, takeaways: Justin Thomas in familiar ... (CBSSports.com)

Also, might we be headed to a PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf showdown this weekend?

Homa has been adamant about how much he's learned about not having to be perfect at major championships, and it's clear from his play at the last few that it's leading to better play on the golf course. The 15 golfers that are playing in the rival league to the PGA Tour shot 53 over with only D.J. and U.S. Amateur champion James Piot under par. 9. Max Homa's ball-striking: The best iron player in the field on Thursday was Homa, who gained over four strokes on approach shots and only got a 1-under 69 out of it. Fitzpatrick is having the best statistical season of his life, and while a bookend win at Brookline would be almost too on the nose, it would also be a terrific story. The other subplot here is that D.J. has not spoken publicly at a non-LIV event, but if he leads or is near the top on Friday and beyond, he's going to get a lot of questions about how much he's changed the landscape of his sport. A showdown between D.J. and either Rory or J.T. -- both firmly entrenched on the PGA Tour side -- is almost too delicious to consider this early in the week. "I played a lot of golf last week and a lot of holes to try to be able to trust it. 3. Callum Tarren oddity: One extremely strange part about Thursday is that Tarren, T2 after 18 holes, was over par for 12 of his first 15 holes and only under par for the last three of the day when he went birdie-eagle-par to close. Second, Morikawa has said all week he's unable to hit a fade at the moment, which over the last three years has been the most reliable shot in all of golf. And his quote about how he was going to spend his Thursday night sitting on the lead was even better: "I'm going to call him a newly best friend, Ben Rector; he is a musician. At the PGA in May, he was the horse who stayed in the peloton the entire way before closing like the thoroughbred he's proved himself to be. On Sunday, we might be talking about Thomas being the first golfer in the last seven years (Jordan Spieth in 2015) to win back to back major championships.

U.S. Open 2022 purse, payout breakdown: How much prize money ... (Sporting News AU)

This year's winner is still making a lot of money, as is par for the course for the U.S. Open.

The winner is going to take home $3.15 million. The Masters posted a reported $15 million in prize money, with Scottie Scheffler taking home $2.7 million for the win. The U.S. Open still boasts the biggest prize money payout, beating out the 2022 Masters, which paid out a total of $15 million. The winner takes an 18 percent of the total prize purse, which will be worth $3.15 million. Among the four majors, the U.S. Open is still king of the majors when it comes to prize money. Traditionally, the U.S. Open has yielded the highest payouts for the winner, and this year, that won't change: The winner will be taking home just north of $3 million at The Country Club.

The opening round had Phil drama, club tosses and turkeys. What's ahead during the second round of the U.S. Open? We've got it covered.

He followed that with a bogey at the 11th and another at the 14th. Dustin Johnson (2 under) and James Piot (1 under) were the only ones among the group to break 70. Without a low score Friday, he is in danger of missing the cut. Two years ago, he made $5,750 on the All Pro Tour. He is also a volunteer assistant coach at Houston. But after making the turn at 6-under on Friday, MJ Daffue (pronounced "Duffey") has a lead over the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick and three others. Daffue, 33, was born in South Africa and played at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He has already earned his PGA Tour card for 2022-23 through his good play on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he is fourth in the The 25. He qualified for his first major championship by sharing medalist honors at a qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, and is making the most of it so far. The 15 LIV players put up a cumulative total Thursday of 53 over. The current leader of the 122nd U.S. Open has 822 (and counting) followers on Twitter as of Friday morning. McIlroy held the lead for most of Thursday afternoon and is looking for his fifth major title. OK. Wild turkeys on the course? When a reporter asked Dustin Johnson whether there were any contenders whose names he had not known, the 2016 U.S. Open champion and all-around la-dee-da guy said, “I mean, the one guy that was leading for a little while, obviously playing well.” It would send him on No. 14 to a concrete path between a fence and a hospitality zone, and it would ask him to try to master that. “Not a lot of people get to lead the U.S. Open by three shots,” he said, proving he doesn’t shirk the leader-board-looking. “I got a little quick in my process. “I would say I think I started losing focus on my clarity on my targets and how I’m envisioning my shots,” Daffue said. Draw a line from there to Friday, and there came a brew of holy mercy and good grief. He led the first major he ever tried by three.

Collin Morikawa bolstered his hopes of a third major title in as many years by grabbing a share of the halfway advantage at the 122nd US Open.

MJ Daffue briefly jumped into a three-shot lead after three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the fourth, only to make three bogeys in five holes on his back nine and double-bogey the last to card a second-round 72, while England's Callum Tarren - the one-time leader - is also four back after three bogeys in his final four holes. Morikawa - beginning on the back nine - rolled in from 10 feet at the 12th and took advantage of the par-five 14th, before following a 15-footer at the 17th by holing from long-range at the first to go four under for the day. McIlroy and defending champion Rahm in the group tied-second on four under, as Morikawa posted a second-round 66 to share lead with Joel Dahmen in Brookline; Watch day three of the US Open live on Saturday from 4pm on Sky Sports Golf
