The horrific events of 16 June resulted in Mashinini becoming the most wanted man in the country. Tsietsi Mashinini was born on 27 January 1957 in Central Western Jabavu, Soweto. Mashinini became a historic icon for his contribution to student politics that led to the protests of 16 June 1976. The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum was later opened in Soweto near the place where he was shot in Orlando West, on 16 June 2002. Hector was one of the first casualties of the 1976 uprising. Among the first children killed was 15-year-old Hastings Ndlovu, and 12-year-old Hector Pieterson. We also remember Tsietsi Mashinini, who lead the students in protest. While black students were already getting conscientised by student organisations and the Black Consciousness Movement when the Bantu Education Act (1953) was instituted, they mobilised for a protest against an official order that made Afrikaans - along side English only - as the medium of instruction compulsory in black township schools throughout the country.

Additionally, we need the government to go beyond the urgent task of job creation in solving youth unemployment. This should involve the development and implementation of policies to create “green and sustainable jobs”, according to the memorandum. So they can’t just be once-off or short-term forms of employment that do very little to change the lived circumstances of young people,” said Mamdoo. Not only are there simply not enough jobs available for our youth to access, but unemployment also works alongside many other social issues.” At least 170,000 unemployed youth were placed in Phase 1 of the employment stimulus in 2021. The South African government has promised millions of jobs in the past and has failed to achieve the targets set for itself over the last two decades. This event seeks to embrace and showcase innovative and creative forms of activism. “As it is, there are insufficient policies that are prioritising the future state of youth. This is precisely so because the current model of higher education is focused more on theoretical teaching and simple community service that does not speak to the needs of the youth. Philah Ngidi, 21, a diploma graduate in translation and interpretation from the Durban University of Technology, is unemployed. In his Sona address for 2022, the president said the stimulus programme is targeted to reach over a million South African direct beneficiaries and over half a million youth. This is problematic because it puts South Africa at risk of a lost generation.

Johnstone-Cassiem adds, "We need to treat hunger as an urgent social issue that affects the future of the entire country. Mustadafin says that its approach to tackling hunger is primarily focused on reaching out to impoverished schools to address classroom hunger. During the month of May 2022, through various school feeding programmes, Mustadafin provided 15 000 meals to children in need at five schools. This is a struggle that approximately 600 000 children experience every day." In 1976, youth played a courageous role to influenced the future of South Africa. Still, we work hard and study more courses just so we can take on new jobs to not sit without a job once the one you’re doing becomes redundant or you are let go because of budget constraints — this I have experienced. You can’t help but ponder on the millions of people like you without a job, going for the same positions as you, and your chances at finding employment seem to become almost slim to none. He graduated two years after we spoke, struggled to get a paying job and years later he is still heavily in debt. On the one hand you get excited at the opportunity of employment but on the other you’re well aware that it won’t last. When all of that does not happen then one starts feeling like a failure, that this life is not worth living because “izinto azihlangani [things do not come together]”. These issues contribute to the large numbers of youth who commit suicide, do drugs and resort to crime, because of the pressure they are under, even from their families. “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” are some of the toughest words to sing when you’re young, educated and unemployed in South Africa. I almost feel guilty for asking God to bless the continent when I need the blessing for myself. Go to school, work really hard so you can go to the best university, graduate and get a job. I do not believe or agree with the term black tax because it is not like our families have any other option or any other income when you are the only person working. Those who are not affected by that feeling of giving up do try many different ways to make their lives in the township better, including going to school to further their education to better their chances of employment. These programmes do not pay anything more than R4 000 a month and in that very small amount there is black tax to consider. Yes, the government does have programmes that assist with empowering the youth or bettering their chances of employment, but that is never really enough. Growing up in Alexandra township in Johannesburg is not for the faint-hearted.

“Young people can’t inherit a country where justice is biased and people aren’t equal before the law. “The fact that millions of young people are not in employment, education or training is the greatest challenge facing our country today. Young people can’t inherit a country where those in power suspend those who are investigating them. “They are no longer hiding; they are eating in front of us. We are intensifying our investment drive and removing the red tape that holds back business growth and greater employment creation. “We remain focused on far-reaching economic reforms and creating conditions for the expansion of businesses throughout the country. Because they have directly caused – through their destructive policies, their outdated ideology and their greed – every last bit of misery that our young people experience today.” You have a far more powerful weapon in your hands, and that is your vote.” –@jsteenhuisen The DA’s message was centred on the job crisis faced by young people in the country. You are not unemployed because you lack talent. “If we want that sacrifice to mean something, we have to ask why things turned out like this.
