Youth Day: Understanding the history behind 16 June (Eyewitness News)

On the morning of 16 June 1976, thousands of black students from Soweto in the then Transvaal, now Gauteng, went on a protest rally from their schools to ...

The horrific events of 16 June resulted in Mashinini becoming the most wanted man in the country. Tsietsi Mashinini was born on 27 January 1957 in Central Western Jabavu, Soweto. Mashinini became a historic icon for his contribution to student politics that led to the protests of 16 June 1976. The Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum was later opened in Soweto near the place where he was shot in Orlando West, on 16 June 2002. Hector was one of the first casualties of the 1976 uprising. Among the first children killed was 15-year-old Hastings Ndlovu, and 12-year-old Hector Pieterson. We also remember Tsietsi Mashinini, who lead the students in protest. While black students were already getting conscientised by student organisations and the Black Consciousness Movement when the Bantu Education Act (1953) was instituted, they mobilised for a protest against an official order that made Afrikaans - along side English only - as the medium of instruction compulsory in black township schools throughout the country.

'Youth are starved of opportunities', say experts ahead of Youth Day (Daily Maverick)

Young activists, meanwhile, are demanding that government prioritise the creation of green and sustainable jobs in a memorandum that is being handed over as ...

Additionally, we need the government to go beyond the urgent task of job creation in solving youth unemployment. This should involve the development and implementation of policies to create “green and sustainable jobs”, according to the memorandum. So they can’t just be once-off or short-term forms of employment that do very little to change the lived circumstances of young people,” said Mamdoo. Not only are there simply not enough jobs available for our youth to access, but unemployment also works alongside many other social issues.” At least 170,000 unemployed youth were placed in Phase 1 of the employment stimulus in 2021. The South African government has promised millions of jobs in the past and has failed to achieve the targets set for itself over the last two decades. This event seeks to embrace and showcase innovative and creative forms of activism. “As it is, there are insufficient policies that are prioritising the future state of youth. This is precisely so because the current model of higher education is focused more on theoretical teaching and simple community service that does not speak to the needs of the youth. Philah Ngidi, 21, a diploma graduate in translation and interpretation from the Durban University of Technology, is unemployed. In his Sona address for 2022, the president said the stimulus programme is targeted to reach over a million South African direct beneficiaries and over half a million youth. This is problematic because it puts South Africa at risk of a lost generation.

The now-iconic picture, depicting Pieterson’s lifeless body being carried through the Soweto streets, shot by photojournalist Sam Nzima, was published and received international attention. As you may have noticed, mis- and disinformation (also known as “fake news”) is circulating online. The Bantu Education system was not an improvement.

The ladies will participate in an art class with children from the Malapa Motsetse Foundation Primary School NGO, Dowling Primary in Westbury, Johannesburg.

The Soweto Uprising for me, as part of the youth in 2022, marks the day in which education was afforded to me and afforded to me in my preferred language. Growing up with both my parents being teachers, I have seen how important education is to empower our youth for a better future. I am also reminded of the youth who I've been privileged to grow up with, including those who took a stand during the fees must fall protests and brave young people like Zuleika Patel, who stood up as a Grade 8 student and took a stand for schooling policies that were not inclusive. For me, Youth Day means a day where thousands of South Africans took to the streets of Soweto to protest their pain and unfair treatment. Youth Day is important to me because I am reminded and grateful to the youth who, in 1976, sacrificed their lives for us to have a better education. Which is why I always say that for me, Youth Day is a day to celebrate progress – essentially how far we have come along as a people: Our understanding of discrimination, consequences put into place in an attempt to lessen discriminatory acts, and fully embracing our rainbow nation.

#RamaphosaMustGo trends as president delivers Youth Day address (Citizen)

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa marked Youth Day by addressing students at a 4IR Expo in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

The narrative surrounding the robbery has not probed critical questions that need to be answered by Fraser and the president himself. All they have successfully done is deepen the country’s external debt. Under Ramaphosa, unemployment and cost of living have skyrocketed,” tweeted Makwakwa.

Several Youth Day events in Cape Town are expected to bring to the fore the spirited activism and solidarity that marked June 16, 1976.

Meanwhile, Al Jama-ah will host a number of nationwide commemorative events, with the Cape Town leg to take place in Bokmakierie/Hazendal, and for the Pelican Park/New Horizons and Eagle Park community. “The festival will bring together young people from the Western Cape to commemorate, celebrate and raise awareness of the effects of gender-based violence, femicide, and gangsterism on youth and the need for peace and security,” Magombo said. “The stalls, in addition to fun and games, will showcase educational material pertaining to the contributions of youth in their efforts towards peace and security in South Africa and the world.”
