Warriors' Stephen Curry has solidified himself as greatest point ... (CBSSports.com)

Warriors forward Andre Iguodala on Steph Curry: “I think he solidified himself as the best point guard of all time.”.

The historical consensus tends to rank Magic Johnson as the greatest point guard of all time. Like Johnson, Curry played with a number of other stars that may have limited the glory he could earn for himself but helped him win a bunch of championships. More than anything, Steph, I think he solidified himself today, not even today, just his career as the best point guard of all time." "This one holds a lot of weight just because of all the shots each championship they threw at us," Iguodala said. He was an all-time great well before the 2022 Finals began and he would have remained one regardless of the outcome. When asked what this fourth championship meant to him, Iguodala spoke at length about how Curry was disrespected despite Golden State's previous titles, and where he stands on the all-time board now.

Stephen Curry Left His Critics With Nothing Else to Say (The New York Times)

Four N.B.A. championships. Two Most Valuable Player Awards. And yes, a finals M.V.P. Golden State's Curry has nothing else to prove.

The second was that he had not been named a finals M.V.P. Standing alone at midcourt, Curry seemed to be laughing and crying at the same time, a euphoric mix of feelings. The first was that he had neither helped his team win a title without Kevin Durant nor defeated a finals opponent who was at full strength. Curry missed the final 12 games of the regular season with a sprained left foot, then aggravated the injury in Game 3 of the finals. He chomped on a victory cigar as he held his finals M.V.P. trophy aloft, pushing it skyward once, twice, three times. All he did in Game 4 was score 43 points to help Golden State even the series at two games apiece. The way he stretches the court with his interplanetary shooting. The Warriors scuffled through a slow rebuild. BOSTON — A few seconds remained in Stephen Curry’s N.B.A. season when he spotted his father, Dell, sitting along one of the baselines. He also recalled the exact moment he started preparing for the start of this season — 371 days ago. “Everybody wants to shoot 3s, and I’m like: ‘Man, you got to work a little harder to shoot like him. For the series, Curry averaged 31.2 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 43.7 percent from 3-point range.

NBA Finals | On Stephen Curry, far more than a great shooter (The Hindu)

Winning his fourth NBA championship and his first Finals MVP, Steph Curry is not just the greatest shooter ever. It's time to finally call him what he is ...

They had three titles and five finals trips in five years from 2015 through 2019, then injuries and roster changes sent them to the bottom of the NBA in 2020 and on the outside of the playoff picture last year. The fourth parade is Monday. The fourth ring comes this fall. When last season ended with a loss in the play-in tournament, Curry went right back to work, with this title in mind, knowing that few so-called experts thought the Warriors had a chance of extending their dynasty. “This is what it’s all about.” And his legend on the court only continues to grow. Nobody in the history of basketball has made more 3-pointers or made the art of throwing a ball through a hoop look easier than Curry does. Add that to the list, too. Curry’s spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame was locked up long before Thursday night, when he scored 34 points and the Warriors won their fourth title in eight years by topping the Boston Celtics 103-90. “To me, this is his crowning achievement in what’s already been an incredible career.” The 34-year-old Curry is stronger than ever, tougher than ever and, somehow, more motivated than ever. Go ahead, put him in the Greatest Of All Time conversation. Thing is, Wardell Stephen Curry II is not just the greatest shooter ever.

Curry acts unassuming away from the floor, but he knows exactly how incredible he is at his job. After a pair of three-pointers to put Golden State up big in the third quarter, Curry told the Boston crowd what he’s ready to get by pointing to his ring finger. Curry is on track to go down as one of the best players in NBA history, but like Tim Duncan before him, you’d never know it from how he carries himself.

Steph Curry kept receipts from all of his haters.

The "Ayesha Curry can't cook" comments weren't the only dig that Steph Curry helped to turn around and fire back at Celtics fans. Curry strongly disagreed that the Warriors' victory was a "checkbook win." "Like, yeah, because it starts with the core group of champions and bona fide winners and the belief that we can run it back. Windhorst was discussing the Warriors' choice to keep Andrew Wiggins after acquiring him in the D'Angelo Russell deal and how that impacted the team. "I heard somebody talking about some ... was it, 'checkbook wins' and all this other stuff," Curry said after the game. "The fact that when we started this season, the conversations about who we were as a team and what we were capable of, clearly remember some experts and talking heads putting up the big zero of how many championships we would have going forward because of everything that we went through," Curry said. It matched the symbol held up by two analysts on ESPN's "First Take" to a tee. So too was Ayesha Curry's postgame tweet about "tonight's menu," which featured within it Curry GOAT. After Curry helped lead the Warriors to their fourth championship in the last eight years with a 103-90 Game 6 win over the Celtics, he was overcome with emotion. "And you get goosebumps just thinking about, you know, all those snapshots and episodes that we went through to get back here, individually, collectively. Indeed, Curry proved that he heard the doubters loud and clear. I have a hard time figuring out what they're going to say now, so this is pretty special."

NBA Finals: Stephen Curry's fourth championship puts him in even ... (CBSSports.com)

Curry joins the likes of LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal with his fourth ring.

Myers believed that as long as the Warriors had Curry they had what it took to win another title without compromising the future, and he was right. Curry is 34 years old and you have to wonder if he's got another five LeBron-like years in him, where age doesn't seem to have nearly the same impact it does on most. If Kevin Durant doesn't go down in 2019, if Draymond Green doesn't get suspended in 2016, Curry probably has at least five titles in these eight years, and very possibly six, with a record-breaking 73-win season on the card as well. The best player on one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. That makes him the first player in NBA history to make at least five 3-pointers in five games of a single Finals series. Steph is one of the all-timers. He's also one of just five players to win multiple regular-season MVPs, multiple scoring titles and Finals MVP, and he's just the third guard in history to average at least 30 points in two separate Finals. We're running out of room on a resume that is becoming pretty tough to keep out of any all-time-great conversation worth its salt. He's the guy that keeps everyone together in the locker room, the selfless star who plays without the ball and makes room for others to shine. The rare superstar blend of humility and downright arrogant confidence in his own abilities that, as Steve Kerr told Scott Van Pelt after the win, "makes everyone in the locker room want to fight for him." Like Kerr said, credit to Myers for pulling all the right roster strings, and for not pulling a few others that plenty of people thought he should've pulled. Besides that LeBron needed Wade and Chris Bosh, Shaq needed Kobe and Wade, Magic needed Kareem. That's how it works, particularly with the depth of talent that exists in the modern NBA. Nobody does it alone. First of all, Curry won a title before Durant and now he has won one after him.

Older, stronger, grayer: These Warriors share a bond — and four titles (The Washington Post)

BOSTON — So much has changed for the Golden State Warriors over the past seven years. Back in 2015, Klay Thompson had a pencil-thin goatee.

Buckner: The Celtics should be on their way to the title. Steve Kerr has won five titles as a player and now four as coach of these Warriors, yet if you listen to his self-deprecation and deflection of all compliments, you might think he’s been a lucky passenger on the road to greatness, instead of the creator of the Warriors’ free-flowing offense and culture. By the fourth quarter, he made a sleeping gesture, his way of putting to bed all that chatter about the Celtics chasing an 18th title. Still, after all this time, they like each other enough to sit together on the team plane. This is crazy!” Then, he danced on the podium while his brother-in-Splash shimmied for the remaining few in the spectator stands. “The man's knowledge for the game is second to none. Michael Jordan’s Bulls clustered their six titles into a pair of three-peat eras in the ’90s — his era of domination when hand-checking and hard fouls were part of the NBA. “Then you go to these last two years, and conversations, narratives, we’re ‘too old,’ the parallel timelines of developing young guys and keeping our core together, all those tough decisions that we had to make, that weighs on you for as much time as we’re going through it.” Midway through that period, after he pulled up from 29 feet and sank one of his six three-pointers, he turned to a stunned and mostly silent home crowd and pointed to his finger to let everyone know he’s going to put a ring on it. He was the baddest man on the court. Teammates — and one in particular who helped them win a couple of more championships but left to help form his own empire in Brooklyn — came and went. And Stephen Curry would have been lucky to grow even designer stubble; his was a face that would get carded if he ordered anything other than milk.

NBA top 75 players of all time: Where does Steph Curry rank now on ... (The Athletic)

What does a fourth title and first Finals MVP mean for Stephen Curry's standing among the NBA's all-time greats?

He’s aged very well and his game and conditioning should allow him to continue that trend, but if he plays at an All-Star level for a few more years, it’ll be tough to contest that he’s the greatest point guard of all time. Rob Peterson: If you’re close to the top 10 or in some people’s top 10, I think you’re already in the GOAT convo. But as a top-10 player (in my opinion) all time, he’s already in the discussion. Damon Sayles: Michael Jordan is the GOAT, in my opinion, and it will take a TON for me to change my mind. Also, I think Luka Doncić should probably be in the 75 based on talent alone and his ability to affect games. I had Giannis Antetokounmpo in my top 20 (at No. 20), and he’s No. 24 on our list. He is the omission from our list and from the NBA’s list. I’d love to place Giannis Antetokounmpo higher, but it’s really hard to jump him above Elgin Baylor considering the way the latter was the original version of many of the future high-flyers on the list – Giannis included. Jon Greenberg: Man, it wasn’t a great season for a lot of the active members of the top 75 list, was it? Curry is the greatest shooter in NBA history, one of the greatest players in terms of gravity and one of the few in history (George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar, Elgin Baylor, Dr. J and Magic Johnson) who can lay claim to changing how the game is played. I think he has a stronger argument now than he did a year ago, but the bulk of that argument is from 2015 to 2020 either way. I don’t want to be a prisoner of the moment.

Here's Why Steph Curry is a Top 10 NBA Player of All Time (Complex)

The list of players with a league MVP and four championships include LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson ...

We saw big plays defensively from Steph all series whether it was stripping Jaylen Brown driving to the rim or reading an entry pass on defense for a steal, he wasn’t the negative NBA fans like Skip Bayless tend to claim he is . I mean with a so-called defensive liability on the floor, the Warriors defense was stifling all year so there’s that. While Klay, Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole stepped up in big moments throughout the series, Steph was shouldering most of the load and quite frankly, ended all talks of his Finals woes with that individual performance. You can’t knock Russell for being alive in the era he’s in especially when he’s without a doubt one of the greatest winners and defenders the game has ever seen but you do have to add context behind his success. Because of Steph and the Warriors, the value and importance of the 3-pointer grew. In a recent interview on First Take, Shaq echoed the sentiment that Steph Curry is a top 10 player of all time. The biggest knock on Steph’s career was the missing Finals MVP on his resume so at this point, what more do you want Steph Curry to accomplish in his career?

Stephen Curry's greatness is rooted in the improbable (Warriors Wire)

Steph Curry got his crowning accolade, winning Finals MVP after leading the Warriors to their 4th title in 8 seasons, being improbable.

He was never going to overwhelm anyone with vertical athleticism or brute physicality as he bullied his way through multiple defenders for difficult finishes at the rim. And perhaps that’s why he’s held with so much affinity by the level-headed consumer. His career, by itself, has changed the game of basketball forever. Many of the game’s legends took advantage of skill surpluses that mail men masquerading as basketball players couldn’t comprehend. Tagging along to add pressure on the shot was Marcus Smart, the league’s current Defensive Player of the Year. Curry, in the hunt for his first finals MVP and fourth championship ring, was right there to meet the ball after its first bounce.

He's eight All-Star selections, two NBA MVP awards, four NBA First Team nods, and is considered by many to be the greatest shooter in NBA history, if not one of the greatest ball handlers as well. The problem was, for all of his shooting ability, Curry's release point was far too low for the college game. The Warriors dynasty was thought to be derailed after Kevin Durant left for Brooklyn as a free agent in 2019 and Klay Thompson was sidelined for two seasons by a pair of career-threatening injuries. It could have easily been the last anyone heard from the Curry family, but instead, the suddenly 6-foot-3 point guard finally started hitting 3-pointers. 'I really couldn't shoot outside the paint for like the first three weeks,' he continued. Didn't know what the environment was going to be like. Longtime teammate Andre Iguodala said Curry has proven he's 'best point guard of all-time,' while head coach, Steve Kerr, characterized the 2022 Finals as Curry's 'crowning achievement.' But he left no doubt. 'You know, out there on the floor, I didn't even know he was down there, to be honest with you,' Curry said. You imagine what the emotions are going to be like, but it hits different.' Didn't know how it was going to happen. Surrounded by a sea of green-clad Celtics fans, the elder Curry was easy to spot along the baseline with his cigar in hand in preparation for his son's fourth NBA title.

After a successful three-year run at Davidson, Curry was selected No. 7 overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 2009 NBA draft. The 2008 NCAA tournament was Curry's breakout moment on a national stage. He has gone on to lead the franchise to four titles, won two NBA MVP awards and earned his first NBA Finals MVP award in 2022. He led Davidson to a 29-7 overall record and earned the No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region. Curry is the school's all-time leader in points (2,635), three-point field goals (414) and three-point percentage (41.2). Curry played three seasons for the Wildcats from 2006 to '09. He was named Southern Conference Player of the Year twice and earned consensus All-American honors in 2007-08 (second team) and 2008-09 (first team).

The recent Finals MVP is not just a great shooter and great scorer but a great player, and moreover he is an influential player.

He is the very walking and breathing embodiment of the three to an entire generation of young basketball players. Steph Curry has glamorized the 3-pointer for the entire country, and indeed the world. There is one more thing, and this separates him from the pack. Bob Cousy popularized both dribbling and passing the ball from behind the back. There were celebrated 3-point exponents such as Reggie Miller and Ray Allen, but Steph Curry has taken shooting the three to another level. He is not just a great shooter, or great scorer. Though not really a classic point guard, he is a clever passer. He has made a mockery of the 3-point distance, as he routinely hits them from 2, 3, 4 (and on and on) or more feet beyond the arc. Elgin Baylor is starting to fall through the cracks of history, and that’s sad. He shoots with hands in his face. Hakeem Olajuwon is the fourth-best center ever. You have your list and I have mine.

Buckner: The Celtics should be on their way to the title. He just reveled in the success of his teammates thriving in a system that Kerr built to leverage the pressure that Curry puts on defense. It was about winning the Finals MVP. He slammed his hands on the table. Curry is the epitome of a franchise player. Early Friday morning in Boston, Curry rubbed his eyes as he sat in the interview room. In 2016, that responsibility led Curry to join the recruiting efforts for Durant, a tall and skilled player whose addition meant Curry would have to adjust. As a longtime teammate of Curry’s, Iguodala warns that, for as much as Curry seemingly has left in the tank, he can’t play forever. If he’s in your top 10 to 15 players ever, he’s bound to be the shortest player on that list. But now that he has submitted a signature Finals performance to the record books, perhaps there can be uninterrupted appreciation of his diverse impact on the game. Over the past eight years, as Curry vaulted from a promising player with tender ankles to the essential superstar of the Golden State dynasty, he changed the sport with more than just his unparalleled shooting. He’s the shortest player to be the driver of a dynasty. Curry didn’t prove himself by finally claiming the trophy named after 11-time champion Bill Russell. Where Stephen Curry ranks among the NBA's all-time great guards ... (ESPN)

Four rings, two MVPs and a career of changing the sport. The list of NBA players at Stephen Curry's level just got a lot shorter.

Johnson won three MVPs and as many Finals MVPs as part of the Lakers' five championship runs in the 1980s. Curry would need another four seasons like his 2021-22 to close the gap, which would mean playing at a championship and All-NBA level through age 38. Although Robertson finished ninth in our top-76 rankings -- two spots higher than he did in 2016, perhaps owing to renewed attention on his triple-double average as Westbrook joined him in that two-player club -- I suspect Curry will end up ahead of him the next time we revisit the voting. More realistically, Curry would have to put together another couple of seasons like this one, then continue to add value at a lower level by playing into his 40s. Given all the attention on Curry never winning Finals MVP, it's amusing to note that Robertson was one of just two players ahead of him in our top-76 rankings without that honor. That success, and perhaps a bonus for the years Johnson was unable to play, produced the No. 4 ranking among the top 76. That has been undercut by Curry continuing to play at a high level into his mid-30s. Finals MVP has been less of a focal point with Robertson because his Cincinnati Royals never won a title during his prime, when they often fell short against Russell's Celtics dynasty. He rates worse in the regular season, in part because he just hasn't played that many minutes compared to the all-time greats. Already, Curry ranks in the top 15 in championships added in the playoffs and based on awards voting. If that seems too low, remember that Curry is still adding to his ledger. Given everything Curry has accomplished since then, that's no longer the case.

A year later, the Wildcats came within a shot of the Final FourReminiscing . As a junior, Curry was so unstoppable one coach opted to play a triangle-and-two defense — the two defenders on him. Everyone in it is terrific, but special mention to Giovanni Ribisi as Joe Colombo. The kid not only shot it better than his old man, but better than anyone who ever has played basketball. “I know I have to prove it every day but that’s OK. I’m not afraid of hard work.” So if it doesn’t matter to them who wins, why would a single fan care? The very first game of the 2007 NCAA Tournament paired the Maryland Terrapins and the Davidson Wildcats, a 4-13 matchup that figured to be very much a one-sided affair. But in retrospect: It was good to be there. Well, as you can imagine the Terrapins didn’t treat Davidson’s Wildcats as they might have treated, say, Kentucky or Villanova. Davidson was within 43-42 at the half. The more notable one was Maryland’s D.J. Strawberry, son of Darryl, who over the course of four years had become an awfully good ACC player, averaging 14.9 points his senior year. That was absurd, of course, but I nodded politely. Sometimes you get lucky in this life — and by “this life,” I mean the sportswriter’s life. Scribes for the Providence Journal and Hartford Courant surely got an eyeful of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig as minor leaguers.

Steph Curry's 2022 NBA title puts him on basketball's Mt. Rushmore ... (CNN)

Down 2-1, with the Boston crowd howling and baying, Stephen Curry painted his Mona Lisa.

Steph's legacy is already cemented, in terms of what he's done for the game, how he's improved the game, and what he's done making all the kids want to play the game (the way he does). He's pushed the game forward." In the two seasons that he missed, the Warriors went 54-83, including missing the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Not content with remaining in one position on the floor, Curry can often been spotted sprinting around without the ball attempting to relocate to a spot where he can get a shot off. He is the Sun in the Warriors' solar system offense. At the end, it does matter. Jordan and James are, by consensus, the two best players in NBA history. My soul is in Brooklyn taking a pre-game nap," Thompson wrote "(You) hear all the talk about you as a player and us as a team, nobody outside of the Bay Area thought we would be here last October when the season started. Teams are now increasingly prioritizing their three-point shooting, while prospective NBA players arrive in the draft with well formed long-range shooting. I could tell in his demeanor," Curry's longtime Warriors teammate, Draymond Green, said after the Game 4 victory. Me as a player, obviously this Finals MVP stuff and all that, knew (we were) good enough to win three championships before. "Just happy I got to do it."

The Stephen Curry debate about whether he belongs in NBA's Top ... (CBSSports.com)

Just like the Celtics and the 2022 NBA Finals, Curry has put this to bed.

There was the unanimous MVP he earned, a mark of history and his rare greatness. And now we have the latest version of the Curry's-awesome-sure-but-not-that-awesome siliness, and the inevitable delayed comprehension of just how exceptional this basketball player truly is. The hall of fame careers he has been the catalyst for, from Draymond Green to Klay Thompson to Kerr. The culture he cultivates that makes winning so certain the Warriors are also next year's favorites. He's one of the absolute best. There were the people around the league, attached to other, jealous stars, trying to push stories about how Steph was good but not great. "But Steph ultimately is why this run has happened," he said. That's coming, too, just as surely as all the glory and threes and rings that have followed the NBA's most underrated all-time great. There were the college years, when Curry's dynamic greatness was on clear display at Davidson. Yet we -- myself certainly included -- had trouble seeing what he was. Even now, after securing a fourth championship, and an NBA Finals MVP trophy finally heading toward his trophy case, the full credit he is due waits. But even the team that drafted him didn't see it right away. There was the idea you couldn't win championships shooting three-point shots (translation: with Steph), until he did it, and then The Association shifted on its axis.

“We wanted pressure straight away from the first line out. “It’s just special. Blues hooker Kurt Eklund struggled to hit his targets on what seemed like a malfunctioning line out operation. “As backs, we just saw space and attacked. Reece’s try all but sealed the game with five minutes remaining. Mo’unga said the Crusaders wanted to play a high-tempo game and play with freedom in the quest to capture their six straight title.
