Stormers coach John Dobson has described this weekend's United Rugby Championship final against the Bulls as the biggest game of his coaching career.

He speaks to the team in every circle. For him, it’s never about Brokkie, it’s about whatever the team needs. He has coached in bigger games than this, but for me, this means the world.” Now, the master poacher is a sure starter in what will be his 100th game. I haven’t travelled the world or got the track record he has. He has coached all over the world.

Stormers coach John Dobson has made two changes to his 23-man squad for Saturday's United Rugby Championship final against the Bulls at Cape Town Stadium.

Playing for the Stormers means a lot to Deon and it means a lot to the rest of us that he reaches this milestone on such a big occasion. "Deon embodies a lot of what we pride ourselves in as a team. Fourie, 35, made his Stormers debut back in 2008 and after earning 84 caps, left to play in France for seven years before returning last year.

Sisyphean Stormers and belligerent Bulls set for titanic URC struggle (Daily Maverick)

URC final: The inaugural United Rugby Championship final is an all-South African affair, which was a seemingly impossible idea not long ago.

It’s going to be personal on both fronts, it’s a completely different game on the day, anything can happen. Going into this week, against the Stormers, it’s going to be a different animal completely. It’s going to be a ‘clash of the titans’, I’d say.” “It was a massive effort. “It was a really tough time at the start of the season. It has always been a “clash of the titans” — to use mythology — of South African rugby and now that clash is for something larger than the Currie Cup — an international title. The Bulls team is coming off an impressive 27-26 semi-final victory at a physical Leinster in Dublin last week. The already poor DHL Stadium pitch will be torn up in scrums and with sweeping squalls and strong winds, fielding high balls is going to be error-ridden. The Bulls had lost their way as a winning team even if the union was reasonably sound in the financial and management sense. It’s especially true when a massive cold front is expected to make landfall in Cape Town hours before the match. “It was dark,” Stormers coach John Dobson said in reference to the union’s woes. “It was literally done like that, to create a team that could compete.

United Rugby Championship final preview: Stormers to pip Bulls in ... (planetrugby.com)

South African heavyweights the Stormers and Bulls will resume their rivalry when they face off in Saturday's United Rugby Championship final in Cape Town.

He was excellent in the execution of his core duties, but also caught the eye with his breakdown work and he was rewarded with a try for his efforts. Roos’ outstanding form has been rewarded with four URC awards and he leads the tournament statistics for carries (245) and defenders beaten (56) and if he continues in this vein he should prove a handful to the Bulls’ defence. However, home ground advantage will be crucial and although it’s difficult to call, the Stormers will win by three points. The 34-year-old runs good angles and is also good at creating opportunities for the likes of Moodie. At the age of 19, Moodie might be a rookie but he plays with a maturity beyond his years and will be sure to test the Stormers defence with some barnstorming runs. Coetzee is also in superb form and his ability to offload in the tackle makes him a real threat with ball in hand. Amongst the Bulls’ backs, there are several attacking threats with Chris Smith‘s emergence as their chief playmaker and goal-kicker amongst the highlights of their campaign. The 24-year-old was one of the Bulls’ stars in their semi-final win over Leinster in Dublin last week. Meanwhile, everything begins up front and who better to have in the forward exchanges than 2019 World Cup winners Kitshoff and Malherbe. Their scrummaging ability is amongst the best in the business and they will be expected to set up solid platform from which the more glamorous team-mates can launch attacks. Gelant’s experience at full-back brings a calmness to the rest of his team-mates while Willemse is a genuine playmaker who dovetails nicely with Libbok. If this trio hit their straps on attack, they should wreak havoc. The Stormers were dealt a blow during their semi-final victory over Ulster when Leolin Zas, who is the tournament’s leading try-scorer, was forced off the field with an ankle injury and he is set to undergo surgery which means he will miss the final. An experienced campaigner, Petersen was a regular for the Stormers during the early stages of the URC so he should fit in smoothly in the back three alongside Warrick Gelant and Seabelo Senatla. Petersen is solid under the high ball and a good finisher, who will be determined to repay the faith shown in him by Dobson with an excellent all-round performance.

Duane helps Bulls prep for Stormers (SARugbymag)

Duane Vermeulen nailed his colours to the mast when he showed up at the Vodacom Bulls captain's run on Friday to help them plot the demise of the Stormers ...

“Duane Vermeulen is coming to have lunch with me,” the Bulls director of rugby said on Friday. “He will join us at the captain’s run this afternoon. One of our stats, we’ve got one of the highest number of scrum penalties as well, in our favour. Vermeulen turned out for Ulster in last week’s semi-final loss against the Stormers and is currently in Cape Town recovering from a knee operation. It’s one of those areas where I wouldn’t want a result based on the fact that one scrum collapsed and the perception is that one person caused it, so that team ends up losing.” Out of 80 scrums, there have been 23 collapses, something is not right. Vermeulen represented the Stormers in the 2010 Super Rugby final and represented the team 89 times between 2009 and 2015, but the Springbok No 8 revealed his allegiance to the Bulls – who he played for between 2019 and 2021 – in the build-up to the URC final.

URC Final - Stormers v Bulls: All you need to know (RTE.ie)

Kick-off time, team news and TV details for Saturday's United Rugby Championship final between the DHL Stormers and the Vodacom Bulls in Cape Town.

"We are up against a deserving and strong Stormers side that has shown throughout the season how competitive and hungry for success they are. So, to be able to play in the final is an incredible feat. They were at home in Loftus Versfeld for their quarter-final against the Sharks but they had to overcome the five-in-a-row-chasing Leinster at the RDS a week ago. However, the former Bull had endured a tough afternoon until that point, missing his two easier conversions, as well as a drop-goal attempt that was both poorly executed, and the wrong option at the time. For us it feels like a privilege to coach against somebody of his stature. He’s coached all over the world." Jake White's side defended aggressively and got up off the line quickly, not allowing Leinster to move the ball to space. Instead Leo Cullen's side were forced to carry, at which stage the Bulls contested relentlessly at the breakdown. Stormers v Bulls is live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player from 6pm, with Jacqui Hurley joined by Jamie Heaslip and Jerry Flannery in studio. Libbok was the hero of the semi-final against Ulster, with his touchline conversion in the final play of the game sending his side through to the final. Equally, a number of Stormers have been recognised for their incredible form of late, with five players named to the URC Team of the Season, and No 8 Evan Roos (below) sweeping up the league's awards, claiming the Players' Player of the Year, Fan's Player of the Year and Next Gen Player of the Year titles. Likewise, the Bulls have been in devastating form, winning ten out of their last 11, including play-off victories against the Sharks and Leinster. However their only defeat in that period came against their final opponents, going down 19-17 to the Stormers in Cape Town in April.

Gutsy Stormers break their curse, claim URC title after fairy tale season (News24)

Foiled initially by a Bulls combination that dominated territory, the Stormers held the upper hand in the collisions and consequently created more opportunities. Some might argue that the Stormers continued their season-long habit of pulling games out of the fire - particularly taking into consideration that they were nowhere in the first 30 minutes of this match - but that would be doing a gutsy second half showing an injustice. For the best part of a decade the Stormers were masters of racking up inconsequential silverware and accolades in Super Rugby, winning conferences and shields before imploding in the knockouts when the stakes were at their highest.

Stormers clinch inaugural URC title despite slow start against the Bulls (RugbyPass)

The Stormers clinched the inaugural United Rugby Championship title by overcoming a slow start to earn an 18-13 win over the Bulls.

Libbok could not add the conversion and Smith cut the gap to two with a penalty. Libbok was the Stormers’ hero in their 17-15 semi-final victory over Ulster last weekend, kicking the winning conversion at the death. The concern for the Bulls at the break will have been their inability to fully capitalise on their control of the opening period and, after briefly restoring their seven-point advantage with a Smith penalty at the start of the second, the Stormers were soon level.

But Burger should also have put a few kicks into touch so that the Bulls could contest the lineouts. He fielded high-ball after high-ball, despite not being the biggest guy on the pitch, and tried to spark a number of counter-attacks. Tried hard to get the Bulls attack going, and defended well. Wasn’t quite able to win those breakdown turnovers and penalties like he did against Leinster. Was a powerful presence on defence too. The Bulls fullback never stopped working.
