'Fearsome climax' as battle for Severodonetsk and Lysychansk ... (CNBC)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the Donbas region of east Ukraine is continuing to see what he called "massive air and artillery strikes."

In May, both nations began the formal process of applying to the NATO alliance. The chancellor told Germany's parliament that "rebuilding Ukraine will be a task for generations." He said Russian forces were "storming" an orphanage in the area. Scholz hopes for a united front on long-term support for Ukraine when he hosts the annual G-7 summit in Bavaria next week. The European Union is expected to deliver its decision later today on whether Ukraine will be granted the status of a candidate country to join the bloc. He said he's been holding calls with various EU leaders to press Ukraine's case for joining the bloc. "NIKE has made the decision to leave the Russian marketplace. Yesterday, enemy aviation struck the regional center, Sirotynom, Verkhnyokamyantsi, Girsky." "Lysychansk, Slovyansk, Kramatorsk — they aim to turn any city into Mariupol. Completely ruined." Russia's state-owned energy giant Gazprom blamed a missing part sent to Canada for repairs as it cut flows by 60% through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline running under the Baltic Sea to Germany — Europe's major natural gas pipeline. "Cultural heritage, in all its forms, should never be targeted. Despite the backlash, Russia still receives significant revenues from energy exports, according to research compiled by economics expert Gerard DiPippo.

Then 1418 days passed from the morning of the invasion to the defeat of the aggressor. “Today there is no shortage of words that Russia did the same on February 24 as the Nazis did on June 22 … And I want to add only one thing. “This is our national goal, and we must work to achieve it on a daily basis. Countries will surely end up in security hardships if they place blind faith in their positions of strength, expand military alliances, and seek their own safety at the expense of others,” Xi said, according to state media. And I’m confident that today, we will grant the candidate status to Ukraine and to Moldova,” he told journalists before an EU summit. He said the Russian army was “liberating Severodonetsk from life and jobs”. “In order to avoid encirclement, our command could order that the troops retreat to new positions,” he said on national television. “In order to avoid encirclement, our command could order that the troops retreat to new positions,” he said. “NIKE has made the decision to leave the Russian marketplace. India’s balancing act of appeasing both Russia and the West has caught the EU off guard. The accession process to the EU can be lengthy. EU leaders meeting in Brussels have followed the recommendation of the European Commission, which was made on Friday 17 June.

The historic move marks the start of a process to join the bloc that could take decades - but gives Ukraine a much-needed morale boost.

The fight: A slowly regenerating Russian army is making incremental gains in eastern Ukraine against valiant but underequipped Ukrainian forces. The latest: Russia’s momentum could slow in the coming months as the Kremlin exhausts its resources.

Ukraine-Russia News: E.U. Leaders Give Ukraine Coveted ... (The New York Times)

The decision sets Ukraine on a path toward joining the bloc, though the process can take a decade or longer complete. Russian forces advanced on a key ...

This week, Turkey’s defense ministry said, Turkish and Russian military delegations met in Moscow. And Ukraine’s ambassador to Turkey said on Thursday that representatives of Russia, Ukraine, the United Nations and Turkey would meet next week in Turkey to discuss the blockade. The group stressed that Mr. Levin was not a member of the military. Ukraine’s E.U. candidate status is a “symbolic gesture of support,” said Kadri Liik, an analyst with the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin, given that it would take years for the country to join the bloc. The Turkish foreign minister on Thursday also addressed his government’s threats to block Finland and Sweden from joining NATO, of which Turkey is a member. “That they held out for a month and a half is remarkable,” the former minister, Andriy Zahorodnyuk, said of Ukraine’s forces. Mr. Chizhov, the Russian ambassador, told the Izvestiya newspaper that the union “lately has degraded to the level of an auxiliary military bloc, auxiliary to NATO.” More than 20 million tons of grain in silos in southern Ukraine cannot be shipped from the ports because of the blockade, Ukrainian and United Nations officials have said, spurring a global food crisis. Allowing Ukraine to host the event, they added, would breach the requirement that the security and welfare of those in attendance be guaranteed. Having failed to make progress in a head-on assault, Russia’s forces have been pressing for weeks to break through Ukrainian defensive positions to the southeast of Lysychansk. The war in Ukraine has forced the European Union into foreign policy, defense and military alignment, areas that it is both politically uncomfortable with and legally underqualified to address. This calls into question the bloc’s capacity to absorb a country of Ukraine’s size and population. Candidacy in the European Union, which the 27 E.U. leaders also granted to Moldova, is a milestone but little else.

Think back to the Europa League campaign of 2020/21 - Arsenal were forced to use Granit Xhaka as a makeshift left-back in the two-legged semi-final against Villarreal. Arteta purchased Nuno Tavares 12 months ago to deputise for Tierney, but the Portugal Under-21 international has failed to deliver and is now being touted with a loan exit to Marseille. There's a strong chance that recurring theme is the reason behind Arsenal's reported interest in Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.

Latest design and foodie trends at Durban Home Garden Show (Mail and Guardian)

An interesting addition to the Home Garden Show is the focus on Durban’s food scene, another avenue of design within homes some could say. Current design shows clear inspiration from design trends of the 1980s: Bold organic forms and geometric patterns and the negative space in a room has become as important as the positive space. It’s about how these spaces make us feel, says Ferreira. “Looking back over the last 40 years of design trends, you can see how interior design adapts to current times,” she adds. According to POP Interior Design Studio which will be headlining this year’s event, the vision for the future of design is curating your space that you — as its inhabitant — fit into almost seamlessly. Another event on the lineup of South Africa’s design event circuit is the East Coast Radio Durban House Garden Show, which brings together Durban’s design world and the city’s culinary universe. It cannot go unsaid that lockdown in 2020 played a role in shifting today’s home and garden design trends.

Orcs and elves refer to the names many in Ukraine use for Russian troops and Ukrainians, respectively, drawing on terms from the Lord of the Rings series. "Ukraine is a future equal partner for at least 27 EU countries," Zelenskyy wrote. The district, Hirske, is just south of Lysychansk, and is one of two remaining cities left in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region still under Ukrainian control and over which Russian and Ukrainian forces have been engaged in bloody fighting for weeks now. "Unfortunately, as of today ... the entire Hirske district is occupied," Hirske's municipal leader Oleksy Babchenko said.

Nigeria's latest lithium find: some key questions answered (The Conversation Africa)

Lithium and most lithium minerals are mined along with other high-value metallic minerals such as tin, niobium-tantalum (columbite-tantalite) and uranium (in ...

Lithium is an element and in nature tends to concentrate sufficiently in the two minerals, spodumene and lepidolite. This is despite the recent wave of interest shown by many explorers in response to the global demand for lithium. The underlying demand for lithium is expected to rise proportionately to the production and sales of those vehicles. However, in a country like Nigeria many of the regulations aren’t followed and enforcement is weak. An economic amount of lithium metal is known to be associated with two minerals: spodumene and lepidolite. The first and most important point is that the discovery does not equate to a commercial find. In reality only one or two of hundreds of such ‘discoveries’ (finds) may end up being a mine after going through the many stages of exploration and development. Three countries, Australia (40,000 tonnes), Chile (20,600 tonnes) and China (14,000 tonnes) mine about 86% of the world’s lithium. It is very popular in China but is likely to become overtaken by Lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt over the longer term; and Normally exploration begins at levels as low as 0.4%. Grade (in %) is a measure of concentration of the lithium in the minerals and or rocks that contains it. In 2019, the mine’s output capacity doubled to 1.34 million tonnes of lithium concentrates annually after a second processing plant was added. It is used in consumer electronics and is finding application in electric vehicles.
