As more New Yorkers are diagnosed with monkeypox, it is crucial to seek care as soon as you notice a rash or sores. The new vaccine clinic expands eligibility to all gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (cisgender or transgender) ages 18 and older who have had multiple or anonymous sex partners in the last 14 days. If you don’t have a health care provider, visit the NYC Health Map or call 311 to be connected to care. The monkeypox virus is most often spread through direct contact with a rash or sores of someone who has the virus. Before or at the same time the rash or sores appear, some people have flu-like symptoms, such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache, and tiredness. The most common symptom is a rash or sores that can look like pimples or blisters. During Pride month in New York, it is especially important to acknowledge the long history and impact of stigmatization, and not to repeat the mistakes of our past." CHN encourages those eligible for the vaccine to protect their own wellbeing, and their partners’, by being vaccinated against monkeypox." To reduce the chance of getting or spreading monkeypox, do not engage in sex or other close physical contact (such as touching, massage, or kissing) if you or your partners are sick and especially if you or they have a new or unexpected rash or sores anywhere on the body. Anyone can get and spread monkeypox, but most cases in the current outbreak are among gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men. The vaccine clinic will be located at the Chelsea Sexual Health Clinic (303 Ninth Avenue in Manhattan). The clinic will open today, and will be open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. moving forward. Getting vaccinated shortly after an exposure reduces the risk of developing monkeypox and can reduce symptoms for those who do get it.

Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York, recommends that you avoid “close intimate contact” with someone who has monkeypox symptoms or that you know has had contact with someone with monkeypox. According to the NYC.gov website, “Gay, bisexual and other men (ages 18 and older) who have sex with men and have had multiple or anonymous sex partners in the last 14 days are eligible to receive the vaccine. Monkeypox spreads only by the virus entering the body through broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth. Although, it’s important to note that the “vaccine is not used to *treat* monkeypox but to prevent it,” Dr. Adalja adds. As of now, the CDC reports that 22 people have tested positive for the virus in the city. The CDC recently ramped up its monkeypox alert to level 2, and encouraged people to practice “enhanced precautions” to lower their risk of contracting the virus.

It presents itself as a flu-like illness accompanied by lymph-node swelling and rash on the face and body. Monkeypox also causes lymph nodes to swell, something that smallpox does not. The original smallpox vaccine, ACAM2000, has also been shown to be about 85% effective in preventing monkeypox, although there were some serious side effects. The Jynneos vaccine made by Bavarian Nordic BVNKF, -2.94%has been licensed in the United States to prevent monkeypox and smallpox. Earlier in June, the U.S. government announced it had ordered 500,000 additional Jynneos doses to be delivered later this year. Monkeypox is a rare viral disease, similar to smallpox, that has mostly occurred in central and Western Africa, but new outbreaks have been reported around the globe this year. It can also be spread through close contact with an animal infected with the virus, or items that could be contaminated with body fluids carrying the monkeypox virus, like bedding or clothing. New York joins similar monkeypox vaccination efforts ramping up in Montreal and Toronto in Canada. The United Kingdom, which has the most reported monkeypox cases (793 as of June 22, per the CDC), recently widened eligibility for monkeypox vaccines by tens of thousands of people to stop the spread.

New York City Is Offering the Monkeypox Vaccine to Men Who Have ... (Gizmodo)

Anyone can spread or get monkeypox, but the majority of the current outbreak—28 cases in New York City—have been reported among men who have sex with men.

The United States has a confirmed case number of 156 with the majority of those cases being reported from California, New York, Illinois, and Florida. The virus is usually spread by direct contact with rash or sores from an infected person, though it can also be possibly spread by contact with items used by a person with monkeypox. Long lines have already been noted at the clinic as apparently the website for appointments does not work. This new release expands that eligibility and follows the example of countries like Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

“We completely understand that we are flying the airplane as we build it and not everything is going to be perfect,” he said. The pace of testing is still at a relatively low level, however, and some people who suspect they have monkeypox have been struggling to find providers to test them. David Polk, who lives in Hell’s Kitchen, said he arrived at the Chelsea clinic at about 12:15 p.m., but not to get vaccinated. But within a half-hour, scores of vaccine seekers started arriving, and a long line quickly formed, he said. It was discovered in 1958, after outbreaks occurred in monkeys kept for research, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “I think it was really bizarre to do this without prior consultation with the community,” he said of the clinic’s opening, “but is the correct move. While far less lethal than its relative, smallpox, it can be fatal, with a fatality rate of between 3 to 6 percent in the African regions where it is endemic. In this global outbreak, the disease has sometimes presented differently, as only a few lesions in the genital area or internally. “We are in talks with the C.D.C. to obtain more doses and are looking into how we can boost our capacity citywide.” Gay men’s health advocates have been calling for expanded access to the vaccine for weeks. Instead, after a news release went out at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the news spread on social media and through word of mouth about the vaccine’s sudden availability. He got his dose by 12:30 p.m., and said he felt relieved to have at least some protection before Pride parties go into full swing.

Monkeypox is not currently considered a sexually transmitted infection, but WHO officials are looking into reports that the virus has been found in the semen of patients. California had the most at 40 cases as of Wednesday. llinois had 19, and Florida 16. "Focusing exclusively on one population when an infection is emerging can propagate stigma and prematurely narrow appropriate public health response," they wrote. According to the guidance, that could be "someone who, for example, has multiple partners, participates in group sex or attends 'sex on premises' venues." New York's vaccination appointments quickly filled, prompting the department to issue a follow-up statement asking residents to check back on Sunday for additional slots. The two-dose vaccine offered, called Jynneos, is FDA-approved for both monkeypox and smallpox.

As New York City rolls out monkeypox vaccinations, CDC works to ... (CBS News)

There was such high demand from New Yorkers wanting the shots that the city had to close its vaccination clinic to walk-ins.

For example, the CDC is pursuing the Food and Drug Administration's permission to expand use of the vaccine in more children who may be exposed. Local vaccination programs would need time to prepare for a large-scale monkeypox immunization effort, Howell said, and might need more resources. More than 4,000 courses of the two-dose vaccine have been distributed to 28 states and territories. The company could fill up to another 7.9 million doses of Jynneos into vials for the U.S. if needed, officials have said. Virtually all cases so far are believed to have been infected through either intimate skin-to-skin contact or through shared fabrics, like towels and bedding. No health care personnel have so far tested positive for the disease after treating a patient. Current federal recommendations for Jynneos had been limited largely to health care workers who had come into high-risk exposures with patients. The CDC's latest domestic tally counts 173 monkeypox cases nationwide across 24 states and the District of Columbia. And there are several considering, planning, and even implementing expanded vaccination programs at this time," the CDC's Brett Petersen told the agency's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on Thursday. While most of the cases identified in the recent global outbreak have been in men who have sex with men, authorities caution that anyone can catch the disease through close physical contact with an infected person. New York City announced Thursday it had become the first jurisdiction in the country to roll out monkeypox vaccinations to a wider group of people at risk of the illness. That mirrors decisions from health authorities abroad, including in the United Kingdom and Canada, which have also broadened monkeypox vaccinations.
