Elon Musk says Tesla's car factories are 'gigantic money furnaces' (The Washington Post)

The Tesla CEO said factories in the United States and Germany are "losing billions of dollars" from supply-chain disruptions.

Musk on Tuesday called it “a small lawsuit of minor consequence.” He said the tools required to manufacture cars using 2170 battery cells were “stuck in port in China, with no one to actually move it,” while the Tesla factory in Shanghai was subject to periodic shutdowns due to local covid-19 restrictions. But those factories are producing a “puny” number of vehicles due to shortages of batteries and global supply-chain bottlenecks, with crucial parts stuck in ports in China, Musk said.

Tesla has recently been making major moves to cut down on costs as Musk revealed that the company would be letting 10% of its workforce go in an email that was leaked earlier this month. However, closures at the Shanghai factory due to Covid caused the car company to lose a month's worth of "build volume," says Tesla CFO Zachary Kirkhorn, noting that production of all Tesla vehicles was "resuming at limited levels" during the disclosure. The billionaire reportedly emphasized the danger facing the Austin plant, noting that car production was not up to the predicted scale due to car parts and supplies being "stuck" in Chinese ports.

Elon Musk's Twitter chaos is consuming SpaceX too (The Verge)

Just last weekend, SpaceX launched a communications satellite called Globalstar-2, but satellite trackers believe the mission also carried covert payloads, which may or may not be related to the US military. This is kind of an awkward area for NASA, because NASA is also a boys’ club. I got impatient, waiting for NASA, so I emailed the agency to ask for an interview about how it plans to handle all of this. The “zero-tolerance” sexual harassment policy is a particular issue for SpaceX since SpaceX reportedly paid $250,000 to a flight attendant who says Musk exposed his penis to her and offered to buy her a horse if she gave him an erotic massage. I suppose if I wait long enough, NASA will say this is “not appropriate behavior” just like it did with the Joe Rogan weed thing, where Musk hit a blunt on Rogan’s popular podcast. “I was told that matters of this nature were too private to openly discuss with the perpetrators.” After an investigation following said blunt-hitting, NASA rewarded SpaceX with a bonus $5 million for “employee education.” Nor was any mention made of Musk’s bid for Twitter, which is what prompted this cycle of Musk shitposting activity, which, in turn, created a distraction that interfered with SpaceX employees’ ability to focus on their work. Musk has already had run-ins with the NLRB, which slapped him on the wrist for anti-union activity at Tesla. As part of its judgment against Musk, he was ordered to delete a tweet. Musk might be the “ideas guy,” but SpaceX is Shotwell’s show. Last week, as first reported by The Verge, a group of SpaceX workers wrote a letter to Musk about his tweets. “As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX — every Tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company.

Elon Musk unhappy with data Twitter gave him on active users (Business Insider)

Insiders see the new data as a sign Musk may try to renegotiate the deal price soon, arguing Twitter's value has changed with new information.

During his first meeting with Twitter employees last week, first reported by Insider, Musk said the prevalence of bots is "probably my biggest concern" given their potential impact on monetizable user metrics. The new data Musk has access to is effectively a " data stream" of Tweets and activity on the platform that is also available to developers through Twitter's developer platform. There is some recent precedent for a renegotiation on an acquisition price agreed to before the market downturn. In May, he claimed the acquisition was "on hold" until the bots issue was resolved. Since Musk announced his intent to buy the company in April, he has said that the prevalence of "bots" or automated accounts was a key issue on the platform. Twitter has given Elon Musk more user data after he complained last week that the large historical database he had received wasn't enough, Insider has learned.
