Wicket! Young lbw b Leach 20 (NZ 35-2). Ben Stokes gives Jack Leach an early go and it pays off instantly! His first ball is a slow left-armer's classic ...

Play starts at 11am UK time, 10pm in New Zealand, and I’ll be back 25 minutes before that with news of the toss. If so, it was quite a familiar one: bowl in the channel and wait for the nick. And the Overton window opens – for Jamie, making his England debut, rather than his twin brother Craig, who arrived in the world three minutes earlier and on the Test scene three years earlier. Stokes posts a leg slip, Broad goes straighter than usual, Williamson takes the bait, and the ball flies between Ben Foakes and that leg slip, Ollie Pope. Thereafter Broad reverts to type, bowling fifth-stump, and Williamson watches the ball go by until the end of the over, when Broad produces a beauty, angled in, swinging away and missing the edge. I couldn’t have given a fart in a friary for the Netherlands series.” For a series of mismatches, with many players missing on both sides, it was actually a lot of fun. Yorkshire CCC has had a shocker, as Sky has just shown with a quick guide to the racism scandal. 5th over: New Zealand 13-1 (Young 8, Williamson 5) Undaunted by that near-miss, Williamson glances Broad again and gets a single. A similar delivery brings four as Young plays a cut, but he’s straining to reach it and could easily have got a nick (which might have gone for six over third man). Overton keeps swinging through the whole over, mixing the short stuff with a full length. 8th over: New Zealand 19-1 (Young 10, Williamson 9) Just a single off Pott’s over, which rather passed me by as I was too busy writing the below. The ball isn’t short enough and he gets a bottom edge which might be the end of him if it hadn’t struck the back of his leg. “With all the data these days,” says Gary Naylor, “I’m continually surprised that there’s no proper metrics to evaluate the pace of a pitch or the atmospherics that produce swing or its close cousin, wobble. 12th over: New Zealand 35-1 (Young 20, Williamson 15) Overton continues and Young pulls again, for three.

OVER 15: NZ 40/2 (Williamson 16 Conway 4). Leach has improved no end in the last 10 days and Williamson, guardedly, blocks out a maiden ...

And then Broad completes the over with a wobble-seam beauty, having probed outside off until he found the perfect line. Ben Stokes takes out fourth slip and moves Ollie Pope to leg slip for Williamson and Broad slants the first ball across the left-hander who duly has a tickle at it. Potts loses his run-up a bit and hangs one outside off stump that Young slaps off the back foot through point for four. Big yahoo outside off from Williamson when Potts goes full and a tad too wide and it keeps swinging away. When Broad strays too straight, Williamson flicks it off the bottom strap of his pad for three. Williamson gets his nose over the ball to block and then drives the next ball through mid-off for four. The Western Terrace rises to Jack Leach when he touches the ball for the first time to field the ball at long leg, three years on from his 1*. Young trots a single. Overton is cranking it up in his second over, now reaching 88mph and forcing Williamson to treat him as suspiciously as a Frenchman sniffing a melon. What a bowling change and Young, who managed to see off the new ball pair who bowled well, gets his bat tangled up in his legs and can't reach a straight ball in time. On come the drinks as Conway replaces Young with five balls to go. He alternates short with full and Williamson works the fullest and straightest through midwicket for a single. Conway ends the over by using the swing to turn the ball through square leg for a single.

Under their new leadership duo of captain Ben Stokes and red-ball coach Brendon McCullum, the former New Zealand captain, England were looking to complete a first home clean sweep in a series of more than two matches since defeating India 4-0 in 2011. England vs New Zealand, 3rd Test Day 1 Live Updates: Stuart Broad put England in a strong position heading into Lunch on Day 1 of the ongoing third Test against New Zealand. Broad dismissed Kiwi vice-captain Tom Latham early in the session, before striking on the stroke of Lunch to dismiss the New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. New Zealand recalled Neil Wagner to their side as captain Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat at Headingley on Thursday. World Test champions New Zealand were looking to salvage some pride at 2-0 down in a three-match series. Star batter Williamson returned to the team after missing the five-wicket defeat in the second Test at Trent Bridge due to a bout of Covid-19, with left-arm seamer Wagner given his first game of the series after towering paceman Kyle Jamieson suffered a tour-ending back injury in Nottingham. Matt Henry dropped out of the side, with Michael Bracewell -- who made his debut at Trent Bridge -- preferred ahead of specialist spinner Ajaz Patel. England had already made one, enforced, change to their side with Surrey fast bowler Jamie Overton given a Test debut in place of James Anderson after England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker was ruled out with an ankle injury.

Henry Nicholls wicket: Watch New Zealand batsman's bizarre ... (iNews)

Nicholls is caught by Alex Lees after his boundary-destined effort deflects off team-mate Daryl Mitchell's bat at the non-striker's end.

He was given the benefit of the doubt by on-field umpire Marais Erasmus and the decision review system when it was generously ruled he had got an inside edge on a delivery from Matt Potts. A shot that might have gone for four was instead sent flying to Alex Lees at mid-off via an inadvertent deflection off the bat of Daryl Mitchell who was trying to get out of the way at the non-striker’s end. In a chain of events that had echoes of Ben Stokes’ freak bat deflection in the closing stages of the 2019 World Cup Final, Nicholls was out on the stroke of tea despite middling the delivery from Jack Leach.

Groundhog Day for Black Caps as England start strong (New Zealand Herald)

A case of déjà vu for New Zealand on the opening day of the third dead-rubber cricket test against England at Headingley. Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell ...

Nicholls battled gamely to 19 off 99 balls in 137 minutes after coming to the crease at 62 for three. Young, on 20, was plumb with the first ball. One factor might be Patel's record at Headingley, albeit from a minute sample size. Their application was admirable, resisting the English attack and a number of failed reviews to stitch their resistance together. Henry Nicholls' dismissal summed up New Zealand's mojo to complete the middle session. Mitchell's strength was in disruption, constantly ensuring bowlers struggled for rhythm by hitting spin down the ground and anchoring his stance outside the crease.

One notable absence for England was that of Stokes, whose ability to swing the old ball might have been particularly useful in the afternoon session. Latham left his first four balls, but after being drawn forward to block the fifth, he was caught perfectly in two minds by the coup de grace, a length ball on off stump that seamed just enough to take the edge and fly through to Joe Root at first slip. Broad, however, was now primed to return for his second spell, and once again, he struck the crucial blow with the final ball of his initial over. However, with his sidekick James Anderson already out of contention with an ankle niggle, Broad's importance as England's senior seamer was plain to see, right from an exemplary and successful first over that claimed the scalp of Latham for a duck. Blundell for his part reached the close on 45 not out from 108 balls - following directly on from his 96 at Lord's and his 106 at Trent Bridge, in another indomitably solid day's work. Facing up to the spin ofJack Leachin the final over of the afternoon session, Henry Nicholls launched into one of his few attacking strokes in a formless innings of 19 from 99 balls.

England vs New Zealand: Watch ridiculously unlucky dismissal at ... (Planet Sport)

England bagged a huge bonus in the last over before tea, Nicholls ridiculously unlucky to be dismissed.

The Surrey bowler had showed glimpses of pace and promise, landing an 88mph bouncer in his first spell and finding some swing off a fuller length. With cloudless, sunny skies overhead and barely a hint of grass underfoot, Williamson did not need to think twice. But neither umpire Marais Erasmus nor Stokes were sufficiently persuaded by the bowler's impassioned appeal. A partnership of 40 had begun to level things out until Nicholls was the victim of outrageous ill-fortune, hammering a lofted drive off Leach only for the ball to ricochet off the middle of non-striker Mitchell's bat and into the hands of mid-off. Broad followed his early dismissal of Tom Latham with the key scalp of returning captain Kane Williamson in the run-up to lunch and might have added to his haul had a couple of inside edges been a little closer to a diving Ben Foakes. In the middle of a busy week for Broad, who announced on the eve of the match that he is expecting his first child with fiancee Mollie King and celebrates his 36th birthday on day two, it was business as usual for the veteran seamer who took two top-order scalps.

Kiwi batter Henry Nicholls was dismissed in one of the strangest ways possible and English bowler Jack Leach celebrated the wicket.

Talking about the clash, Nicholls had 19 runs to his name after facing 99 balls. They stated the law with regards to the incident and wrote. Soon after, Nicholls was given out and his inning of 19 runs came to an end. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) soon took to Twitter to clarify the rules. Could be called one of the unluckiest dismissals, Nicholls got out after the ball deflected from his own teammate's bat and flew into the fielder's hands. During the ongoing third and final Test between New Zealand and England at Headingley, something weird happened on Day 1.

The DRS system needs to be turned off and turned on again, prompting a brief delay to the start of Potts’s over. 97th over: New Zealand 246-6 (Mitchell 82 Bracewell 0) Bracewell is on the front foot to a rare pitched-up ball from Overton but an elegant cover drive goes straight to mid-off. 105th over: New Zealand 260-6 (Mitchell 83 Bracewell 12) Bracewell swipes a shorter ball from Broad through midwicket for two, prompting the bowler to give the ball another disapproving stare. 99th over: New Zealand 252-6 (Mitchell 83 Bracewell 5) Broad replaces Overton at the Kirkstall Lane, and as if responding to the introduction of the celebrappeal king, DRS cranks back into gear again. 100th over: New Zealand 252-6 (Mitchell 83 Bracewell 5) England could do with preventing Bracewell getting too set here – a wild swish and a miss outside off gives Potts some encouragement, though the batter is subsequently watchful. A less adventurous field is set for Bracewell, who clobbers the fifth ball of the over high over the bowler’s head for four. “This attempting to get the ball changed is a bit tiresome,” writes Nick Parish. “Any reason there couldn’t be a DRS-style approach to this – you get two or three unsuccessful attempts to get the ball changed per innings, and that’s it. He bashes down another single through midwicket to put Mitchell on strike, and he greets Broad with a really elegant controlled pull through midwicket for four, finding the gaps with precision. 112th over: New Zealand 317-7 (Mitchell 106 Southee 30) Overton’s radar is a bit awry here, and Mitchell confidently bunts a low full toss over the bowler’s head for four. A single square on the leg takes Mitchell into the nineties, which gives him a new record for runs by a New Zealander in a series against England. An incredible achievement in a losing campaign. 114th over: New Zealand 320-7 (Mitchell 107 Southee 30) Leach has a strained shout for caught-behind, thinking Mitchell might have flicked off glove to keeper, but he’s turned down and Stokes declines a review. Which ends a lively old session, which England began well but saw two catches go down, and New Zealand were able to score with ease in the second hour.

Daryl Mitchell made history for New Zealand with his third century in consecutive matches, but fell on the stroke of lunch to a fine catch in the deep from Ben ...

His first scoring shot was a slog off Leach that skimmed inches over Bairstow's head at mid-on, before he moved to within two blows of MS Dhoni's sixes tally with a hoist over backward square. Not for the first time this series, England were also distracted by their concerted efforts to instigate a ball-change - a point on which the umpires did not relent until the 17th over. Potts' delivery was very similar, in fact, to the ball to Mitchell that England had fatefully failed to review on day one, but this time umpire Richard Kettleborough upheld the appeal - and as Blundell traipsed off shaking his head, it was clear that he would have taken a second opinion had one been available. Things came more quickly after lunch, as Jack Leach claimed the final two New Zealand wickets in the space of three balls to complete a five-wicket haul - his first in at Test on home soil. It didn't take long, however, for Potts to get some overdue luck - although the manner in which it arose was contentious in the extreme. However, after scuffing a full ball towards Joe Root at first slip, Mitchell was saved by the flying glove of the keeper Ben Foakes, who dived across his team-mate and palmed the chance away to safety.

Pope gets off the mark with a leg glance for a single off the first ball.

Blundell plays tip and run to cover, giving Mitchell a spoonful of his own medicine. It's another maiden for Potts and leaves him after the fifth over of this spell with 25-11-30-1. Good take from Foakes. Barcewell sweeps for a single then Mitchell puts his dancing boots back on, comes down and carts a four over mid-on, partially off the toe of the bat. A bit more flight keeps Bracewell guessing and Leach ends the over with Foakes roaring his approval when one leaps as well as turns into Bracewell's top flap. Mitchell flicks Leach for a single to bring up his 463rd run of the series, a record for a Kiwi in England. Must be shoo-in for the Almanack next year. Southee steps away and uppercuts Overton's first bouncer for four over the keeper and cuts the next one in front of square for four more. Southee (they crossed) blocks out the final over of Leach''s 38th over which started 46 minutes ago. Overton slips out a full toss and Mitchell meets it on the middle of his bat, smashing it over mid-on for four. Stokes runs to his left and has to tack backwards too to take an excellent catch over his shoulder. Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell were magnificent as they have been all series but I think having decided to bat first , NZ must think they are about a hundred short. FOW 4/1 Southee was in Boult's shadow in Nottingham but looks back to his best, making one angle in to Crawley and zip away off the pitch.
