Those wins would have imbued both sides with confidence but it is the home team that perhaps has more reason to approach kickoff chest-out. Both had to record away wins against the heavily favoured Bulls and Cheetahs respectively. The Pumas are in search of history, while the Griquas are desperate to finally bury theirs.

A Currie Cup final like never before when Griquas clash with Pumas ... (Daily Maverick)

Saturday's Currie Cup final in Kimberley will celebrate the oldest contest in SA rugby with an unlikely winner.

“During the Currie Cup, the bigger unions loaded their teams with URC players because they had breaks in between and, now look, we’re still up there. It will be a special day in the history of this proud union on Saturday. Everybody is excited,” added Obi. It is finals rugby, so you do have to take the points when you can, but we are going out there to express ourselves and have fun. “The most important thing for them is to enjoy the week. We are expecting exactly the same from the Pumas, with their forwards trying to dominate physically.” “Because it is a final, I think the stress levels might be a little bit higher.

It meant as much to the urban dweller, as it did to his country cousin. The Pumas prevailed 26-19 in the final having taken a long route to the trophy. It proved a false dawn. In 1970 the Currie Cup had meaning and purpose. It was the Pumas however who looked more incisive and committed to the cause. They won away to the Cheetahs last weekend in the semifinal and they again got the job done on the road on Saturday.

Pumas claim landmark Currie Cup title with win over Griquas (Citizen)

The Pumas put in a superb performance to claim a famous 26-19 (halftime 18-9) win over the Griquas in the final of the 2022 Currie Cup.

The Pumas then got off to a flying start in the second half as Williams thought he was in for a second try after a super kick and chase, only for the TMO to spot a forward pass in the build-up as the score was chalked off. Whitehead’s third successful penalty of the half in the 31st minute then made it a one point game, but the Pumas put in a massive final five minutes to give themselves a strong lead at halftime. A 20th minute penalty to Whitehead then put the Griquas ahead for the first time, but this seemed to spark the Pumas to life as they went over for the first try four minutes later.

Griquas quickly drew level through the boot of fullback George Whitehead, who nailed his second attempt from the kicking tee to give the hosts the lead for the first time in the match on the 20-minute mark. The first points of the final went to the Pumas via inside centre Eddie Fouche, who stroked the ball over from in front of the sticks. Known for posing a threat with ball in hand, Jimmy Stonehouse’s charges outscored the hosts three tries to one, but it was their heroic defence in the second half – after taking a nine-point lead into the break – that clinched them a 26-19 victory in their first appearance in the final of the sport’s oldest competition.

Naas Botha famously coined the phrase “the Currie Cup is not won in May” but the Pumas proved it can be done a month later, and then some.
