Guardiola, a top-tier midfield metronome himself back in the day, has the perfect knowledge for the position and Phillips is likely to take his game to another level under the Catalan. The one-club man has a sense for sniffing out opposition attacks but combines that with a wonderful range of passing and the ability to dictate a game from deep. A compilation of Kalvin Phillips doing his thing in midfield proves the 26-year-old is a perfect fit for Manchester City.

Kalvin Phillips set to join Manchester City: But where will he fit? (The Athletic)

Kalvin Phillips represents good business for Manchester City - but how will Pep Guardiola use the midfielder?

“It was always going to take a lot for Kalvin to leave Leeds,” Redfearn says. “He’s a Leeds lad and he’s very loyal, so it was going to take something special. “He’s got all the attributes to go and play with top players. “I think that’s very exciting, because he’s joining a club where you’ve got to win almost every game. “Mentality-wise, I think Pep Guardiola will find Kalvin is very able to take new ideas on board very quickly. “That happened at a good time for Kal. Bielsa wanted him to be a midfield player who could drop in between the centre-backs and help them overload the opposition. “Coaches are important for young players, but ultimately, individually, they have to find a way to get through to the elite level. “The big thing is, regardless of my input, regardless of Marcelo Bielsa’s input, the lad himself has found a way,” Redfearn says. Those who worked with Jack Grealish were sure he would thrive following last summer’s move from Aston Villa, given his ability, willingness to learn and the quality of his new team-mates. And the sky was the limit for him, really, because he had all the tools. And when Bielsa got him, he was still young and impressionable, willing to take on different ideas. Firstly, Rodri will not have to be relied upon so much and can be rested more often.

The Manchester City star may have to wait a little longer to enjoy more game time in his original position.

The Portugal international now looks set to stay at the Etihad despite links with Barcelona, and the arrival of Phillips may limit Foden’s opportunities to drop back. Pep Guardiola was always after a replacement for Fernandinho upon his return to his native Brazil, but while the seemingly imminent capture of the England star is exciting, it’s also eyebrow-raising. And with Kevin De Bruyne going nowhere, it means there’s little room for anyone else in the midfield.

Kalvin Phillips Edges Closer To Heartbreaking Manchester City ... (Forbes)

Born and bred in the Yorkshire city, Phillips has been with the club since the age of 14, he doesn't just play for the Whites, he supports them too.

The cut-throat churn of the industry means that loyalty is rarely a factor for both players and clubs. The creative midfielder had been with Aston Villa since the age of six and was the club captain. Having been the beating heart of his previous employers it escaped no one’s notice that the role Grealish was given at Manchester City was far less influential. EU freedom of movement laws meant that it was relatively easy for non-English players to qualify. The new visa process for soccer players in the UK places importance on the level from which the player is joining too. From a sporting perspective, it’s easy to see why Phillips might want to make the move. This was talent wasted, the critics said. Only truly exceptional talents will get approval. For Leeds United and Aston Villa fans having a star who came through the ranks and follows the team as much as you was a beautiful throwback to the way things used to be. But a move to the Premier League champions was too much to resist and, much to the distress of the Villa fanbase, he swapped Birmingham for Manchester. For a player who is now an established starter for the England team, that is a cause for concern. It’s a reflection of the esteem the midfielder is held that most of the complaints from fans have not been about Phillips making the switch across the Pennines. They were annoyed about the fee Manchester City paid for him, the consensus being it was far too low.

Man City spent £100m on Jack Grealish only last summer while Manchester United’s £80m outlay on Harry Maguire in 2019 continues to be mentioned when discussing transfer fees. Whites supporters had become very much resigned to losing star players such as Phillips and Raphinha, although they are frustrated by the amount they are due to receive.
