It wouldn’t be the early rounds of Wimbledon if there wasn’t a rain delay. The match is delicately poised but the rain has to clear up first. There are a few more umbrella’s coming up as the rain gets slightly heavier. The word coming out of Wimbledon is that there won’t be any play until 12:30pm at the earliest. Closing out the action will be Murray, who faces James Duckworth. Murray made it to the third round last year but was emphatically defeated by Denis Shapovalov and admitted afterwards that he was questioning his future. The US Open champion has shaken off injury concerns but faces a tricky opening match against world No 46 Alison van Uytvanck, who reached the fourth round herself in 2018.

Djokovic brings curtain up on Wimbledon (Bangkok Post)

LONDON - Novak Djokovic begins his bid to match Pete Sampras as a seven-time Wimbledon champion on Monday, with British Grand Slam title winners Andy Murray ...

The Spaniard has already collected the Australian Open and French Open this year to put himself halfway to a first men's calendar Grand Slam since 1969. Murray, the Wimbledon champion in 2013 and 2016, is unseeded this year but remains a dangerous floater in the draw. Ruud has lost in the first round on his two appearances at the tournament. In retaliation for the ban, the ATP and WTA tours have stripped Wimbledon of ranking points. After a cancelled edition due to the pandemic in 2020 and a reduced capacity tournament last year, Wimbledon returns to full house crowds for 2022. Also adding fuel to the Djokovic fire is the chance to win a fourth successive Wimbledon title and join a select group.

Wimbledon 2022: Djokovic hopes to cut Nadal's lead, Serena ... (Firstpost)

Wimbledon 2022 gets underway on 27 June brimming with talking points: player bans, Djokovic chasing Nadal, Serena's return, local hopes and full capacity ...

That is not going to be the case. By reaching the final of Stuttgart, Murray's decision to not play most of the clay court season felt vindicated. Wimbledon announced record prize money for this year's tournament with the two singles champions taking home £2 million each. Wimbledon will return to full capacity for the 2022 edition - two years after it was not held for the first-time since World War 2. The decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players has divided the tennis world. The many colours and styles of Paris will give way to all-whites of London. Wimbledon 2022 is here. A slip wasn't going to be Serena's last image at Wimbledon or her tennis career and she used that as motivation. Unseeded and World No 1204, she has avoided big guns such as Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur (who she partnered in Eastbourne) and Anett Kontaveit in the first round. Djokovic, a six-time Wimbledon champion, is hoping to tick his tally of unbeaten matches at SW19 to 28 by ending a 'drought' of majors. He lost the 2021 US Open final to Medvedev, was deported from Australia in January and lost to an inspired Rafael Nadal at the French Open. She has a tough start against Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck. Djokovic, Nadal have called the decision unfair.

The match came to an anticlimactic ending on an incorrect Duckworth challenge, but Murray showed how much it meant with several fist pumps and a big roar. "The last thing I expected was to come back from surgery and win two titles in a row," Berrettini said after retaining his Queen's Club crown. Rune, Musetti and Draper are third, fourth and fifth — respectively — in the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan, trailing only Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. After winning at Stuttgart and The Queen's Club, the Italian enters Wimbledon on a nine-match winning streak. The Italian leads Garin 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head, though Tuesday's contest will be the pair's first meeting on grass. That's what I think I achieved in the last couple of weeks, to get as many matches on grass as possible. "I love the serve-and-volley game, coming in as much as I can, slicing, attacking. I said — I insisted, in fact — that I can play on this surface, and it remains one of my favourite surfaces that tennis has to offer. The fourth seed is widely regarded as one of the game's best clay-courters, so that statement is not one to be taken lightly. "People kind of doubted that I can play on grass, I think it's fair to say. A new treatment on his chronic foot injury has provided relief from pain both on the court and in his daily life. In stark contrast to Nadal, Tsitsipas played three grass-court events in the last month, saving his best for last. It's a little bit more predictable when you have the history in the weeks before."

Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: 'Still in lockdown?' Outrage at empty seats ... (Daily Express)

WIMBLEDON fans are furious at the number of empty seats after people queued for days for the chance to watch the tournament.

And Murray can't understand why people find it "disrespectful" when it's a viable tactic if the opportunity presents itself. Please feel free to get in touch with me as I work if you have a story or tips to share! “It looked like she wanted to be out there, that’s what it boils down to. Good morning from London. I’m Tara Fair, I’ll be bringing you all the latest developments on Wimbledon 2022. The flurry of complains comes after people queued for days for the chance to see their favourite players compete. “That's the best part. I think that's what got her over the finish line. Monday saw day one of Wimbledon 2022 kicking off on the BBC with the venue back at full capacity for the first time since COVID-19. During a much-anticipated match involving two-time champion Andy Murray and Australia's James Duckworth, viewers noticed swathes of empty seats. Sometimes I suppose it could get tiring to opponents to hear Rafa say ‘I didn’t feel my foot, I couldn’t even feel it!’" User @CromwellStuff added: "Who watched some of Wimbledon? With his long reach, huge serve and flat baseline power, he is dangerous on grass and was, like Berrettini, one of the players to watch closely in the bottom half of the men’s draw. Wimbledon was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic and instituted strict restrictions last year, following British government guidelines. The club said some health and safety measures were still in place. Berrettini trained on Centre Court on Thursday with Rafael Nadal, the No. 2 seed.

Nadal goes long twice and leaves Cerundolo within two points of the set. He whips a forehand across court and forced Nadal behind the baseline. Rafael Nadal has only been beaten twice from two sets to love up in his career. Cerundolo turns a backhand over the ball and again puts it out of play. The favourite in the women’s singles is World No 1 Swiatek and she opened up her championships on Centre Court with a straight-sets victory over Jana Fett. There is more Wimbledon royalty in action on day two with Williams making her long-awaited return. That’s compared to defending champion Novak Djokovic, who has 20 titles, with the six-time champion up and running after swiftly moving into the second round with a hard-fought four-set win over Soonwoo Kwon. Matteo Berrettini has been ruled out of Wimbledon 2022 with Covid while organisers want to get players' names right.

By happenstance Dr Jenny Harries, the former deputy chief medical officer and star of UK Covid press conferences was in the Royal Box on Tuesday. It could be possible she was consulted on her professional opinion during a lengthy break in play, like when Rafa Nadal was preparing to serve, for example. Official numbers from the first day of competition recorded 36,603 on site on Monday, from a potential capacity of 42,000. To confirm: this is not what was expected when the grounds were restored to full capacity for the first time in three years.

Rafael Nadal escaped a tough first-round test and the Covid-19 chaos in his half of the draw to advance to the second round at Wimbledon.

Djokovic has said he has added motivation to win his fourth straight Wimbledon because he is not currently permitted in the U.S. to play the U.S. Open because he is not vaccinated against Covid-19. And in my case, the last three years I didn’t put a foot on a grass court, no? He said he played through the French Open because he received multiple anaesthetic injections during the tournament. Nadal has so far escaped the Covid chaos in his half of the draw that caused last year’s runner-up, Matteo Berrettini, and Marin Cilic to pull out of the draw. He is drawn to meet No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in the final. He is now 15-0 in majors this season after winning the Australian and French Opens to increase his all-time men’s record to 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

Serena Williams lost in her first singles match in 364 days, outlasted by 115th-ranked Frenchwoman Harmony Tan 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 in the Wimbledon first round.

Asked if there’s any part of her that wants to play the U.S. Open in two months, she said, “That being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam [in 1999], is something that’s always super special. Tan went up a mini break at 8-6 in the tiebreak, then served it out. This time around, even though I’m considered a favorite, I don’t feel like it as much as I did when I was 15 or even 16. I feel like I learned so much not to put pressure on now, now, now. Asked if she’s OK if this is her last memory at Wimbledon, she said, “Obviously not. “I feel like I’m a lot more relaxed than when I was considered the sensation,” Gauff said before the tournament.

Serena Williams Exits Wimbledon in the First Round, Again (The New York Times)

Williams, who had not competed in singles on tour since withdrawing from Wimbledon last year with an injury, lost in three sets to Harmony Tan of France.

Williams served for the match at 5-4 and was two points from victory at 30-15 only to lose the next three points and her serve when she hit an unconvincing forehand approach shot that Tan slapped past her for a backhand winner. That was certainly understandable in light of her long layoff, and the crowd reacted with awkward silence at first. Tauziat understood the importance of keeping Williams out of her prime hitting zones and of keeping her on the move. She also looked as tight as piano wire, struggling to let her natural power flow and missing swing volleys and approach shots by the bunch while laboring to move laterally. It was a ragged but ultimately admirable performance as she tried to shake off the rust and solve the myriad riddles posed by Tan, who had watched Williams only from afar until their duel. But at least she can leave the All England Club with a less painful memory than what she took from last year’s Wimbledon, when she tore a hamstring after slipping in the first set of her first-round match with Aliaksandra Sasnovich, hobbling off Centre Court in great distress. She then had to navigate the tiebreaker despite the weariness in her legs and the tension in her gaze. Williams and her player box full of family, friends and team members, including her new coach Eric Hechtman, were not able to celebrate. She won two sets instead, turning what could have been a feel-good story for Williams into a narrow defeat that will repose the question of how much more professional tennis Williams intends to play. Williams dominated the second set but Tan fought back in the third while Williams’s level and energy dipped even if her fighting spirit did not. “When I saw the draw I was really scared, because it’s Serena,” said Tan, 24. Her grueling duel with Tan was a stylistic contrast that lasted 3 hours and 11 minutes.

Serena Williams loses grueling first-round match in return to ... (The Washington Post)

It was the first singles match for Williams since she tore her right hamstring during the opening set of the first round at Wimbledon in 2021.

Ultimately, though, she lost to the steadiness of the daughter of Cambodian and Vietnamese parents, a player coached by 1998 Wimbledon finalist Nathalie Tauziat, and a player who improved her lifetime match record at Grand Slam tournaments to 3-6, set against that of Williams, which stands at 365-55. Wimbledon starts: The season’s third Grand Slam returns in full with big crowds, roars and a little rain. The war in Ukraine: As the tournament gets underway, Wimbledon’s Russia and Belarus ban leaves 16 of the top 100 on the outside. The match showcased her rustiness (54 unforced errors), her everlasting brilliance (61 winners) and the guttural screams that long have helped her find her inner Serena Williams. It showed her fight in the utmost when she prevailed through a monster of a 12-deuce, 30-point second game of the second set, taking on momentum there. As Tan peppered the court with drop shots as if by ancient text of how to play someone with 40-year-old legs, she forced Williams to elevate, and elevate Williams did. She lost an advantage after she led 3-1 in the third set.
