Ghislaine Maxwell awaits sentence in Epstein sex abuse case (wflx)

Ghislaine Maxwell faces the likelihood of years in prison when she is sentenced for helping the wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse underage ...

He pleaded guilty to sex charges in Florida and served 13 months in jail, much of it in a work-release program as part of a deal criticized as lenient. “She made the choice to sexually exploit numerous underage girls. In the years that followed, many women sued Epstein over alleged abuse. Eleven months after his death, Maxwell was arrested at a New Hampshire estate. Prosecutors said Epstein, who killed himself in 2019 while awaiting trial, sexually abused children hundreds of times over more than a decade, and couldn’t have done so without the help of Maxwell, his longtime companion and onetime girlfriend. He was arrested in 2019, but killed himself a month later. Most of the others in the crowded courtroom were members of the media. Afterward, he was required to register as a sex offender. Maxwell, wearing a blue prison uniform and a white mask to conform with coronavirus rules, sat quietly through the first hour of the sentencing hearing as lawyers debated the law. The fourth was Annie Farmer, who identified herself in court by her real name after speaking out publicly. At some point, Maxwell will have a chance to speak, as will five women who say they were sexually abused by Epstein with Maxwell's help. Several women who testified against Maxwell or released statements prior to sentencing also were in court.

Maxwell's attorneys had pushed for leniency after 60-year-old was convicted in US in December of five of the six charges she faced.

Farmer testified that Maxwell gave her a nude massage when she was aged just 16 at Epstein’s sprawling New Mexico estate. Kate told jurors that Maxwell led her upstairs, where Epstein was in a robe. Kate said that she first met Maxwell in Paris around 1994, at 17. “There were hands everywhere,” Jane said of an incident with Epstein and Maxwell. This abuse also took place when she was 15 and 16. But Maxwell did not offer much in the way of an apology for her actions. Maxwell was escorted into the courtroom in ankle shackles and throughout the three-hour proceeding, had an unsettled demeanor.

Another survivor, Sarah Ransome, said Epstein and Maxwell threatened that her family would be killed if she ever tried to escape what she calls a "dungeon of sexual hell." As in other statements, Bryant also said she was grateful to see the crimes exposed, with the hope of justice finally found. Maria Farmer said her future as an artist was ruined by Maxwell and Epstein when she met them in 1996. Eight women who say Maxwell manipulated and abused them for years sent victim impact statements for the court to consider in weighing Maxwell's punishment. "This toxic combination of being sexually exposed and exploited, feeling confused and naïve, blaming myself all resulted in significant shame," Annie Farmer wrote in her statement. Prosecutors also asked Nathan to impose a $750,000 fine on Maxwell — the maximum allowed for her crimes. She is a very dangerous and devious individual." They say the pair often traveled between Epstein's mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side, a villa in Palm Beach, a ranch in New Mexico, a private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and an apartment in Paris. But prosecutors sought a sentence between 30 and 55 years, citing the number of victims and Maxwell's refusal to take responsibility. But prosecutors dismissed those claims and cited Maxwell's "utter lack of remorse" for her actions. Nathan ruled that six of the victims were also free to speak at the hearing if they chose to. Epstein, who was a convicted sex offender, died in August 2019 at a Manhattan correctional facility.

Maxwell in court told victims that she was 'sorry' but prosecution argued Maxwell had shown an 'utter lack of remorse'.

Speaking at her sentencing hearing in Manhattan federal court before learning the sentence, Maxwell called Epstein a “manipulative, cunning and controlling man” who fooled everyone in his orbit. Prosecutors had suggested Maxwell be sentenced to between 30 and 55 years behind bars. But the prosecution contended in its own court filing last week that Maxwell “was an adult who made her own choices”.

She had been given back clothing and her legal papers, could meet with her lawyer and would be able to “continue to prepare for sentencing unencumbered,” the prosecutors wrote. “You deserve to spend the rest of your life in a jail cell,” the statement said. Prosecutors told the judge that the jail had acted after the warden learned on Friday that the federal Bureau of Prisons inspector general’s office had received an email from Ms. Maxwell, who claimed to be in fear for her safety. The prosecutors also said Ms. Maxwell had refused to answer questions from the jail’s psychology staff and would not elaborate on her concerns. Afterward, Ms. Farmer said, Ms. Maxwell gave her a massage in which she touched the top of her breasts. “It is my sincerest wish to all those in this courtroom and to all those outside this courtroom that this day brings a terrible chapter to the end, to an end. “Your honor, it is hard for me to address the court after listening to the pain and anguish expressed inn the statements made here today," she said. And to those of you who spoke here today and those of you who did not, may this day help you travel from darkness into the light.” One said Ms. Maxwell was sometimes present in the encounters, and the other said Ms. Maxwell directly molested her by touching her breasts. The lawyers claimed the government turned its attention to Ms. Maxwell only after the public uproar following Mr. Epstein’s death while in the Justice Department and the Bureau of Prisons’ custody. Several of her accusers, including some who testified at her trial, have asked to address the judge, and Ms. Maxwell also will be given the opportunity to speak. Her lawyers have said she is planning to appeal, and it is possible that Ms. Maxwell, who did not testify at her trial, will choose to remain silent in court on Tuesday as well.

In the later phase, from approximately 2001 until at least approximately 2004, MAXWELL and Epstein enticed and recruited, and caused to be enticed and recruited, minor girls to visit Epstein’s Palm Beach Residence to engage in sex acts with Epstein, after which Epstein, MAXWELL, or another employee of Epstein’s would give the victims hundreds of dollars in cash. MAXWELL and Epstein’s victims were groomed or abused at Epstein’s residences in New York, Florida, and New Mexico, as well as MAXWELL’s residence in London, England. The victims were as young as 14 years old when they were groomed and abused by MAXWELL and Epstein, both of whom knew that their victims were in fact minors. MAXWELL also acclimated victims to Epstein’s conduct simply by being present for victim interactions with Epstein, which put victims at ease by providing the assurance and comfort of an adult woman who seemingly approved of Epstein’s behavior. From at least 1994, up to and including in or about 2004, GHISLAINE MAXWELL assisted, facilitated, and participated in Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse of minor girls by, among other things, helping Epstein to recruit, groom, and ultimately abuse victims known to MAXWELL and Epstein to be under the age of 18. Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that GHISLANE MAXWELL was sentenced today in Manhattan federal court by United States Circuit Judge Alison J. Nathan to 240 months in prison for her role in a scheme to sexual exploit and abuse multiple minor girls with Jeffrey Epstein over the course of a decade.

Outside the courthouse, Kevin Maxwell said that his sister won’t give up on her legal battle, “and we as a family will be solidly behind her.” But she did not admit culpability and laid blame for the abuse on Epstein, saying meeting him was the “greatest regret of my life.” In the years that followed, many women sued Epstein over alleged abuse. Judge Alison J. Nathan noted as she imposed the prison term and a $750,000 fine that Maxwell never expressed remorse for her crimes. Eleven months after his death, Maxwell was arrested at a New Hampshire estate. Afterward, he was required to register as a sex offender. The allegations against Epstein first surfaced in 2005. “It’s been an incredibly long road to justice for myself and for many other survivors,” said Sarah Ransome, one of Epstein’s accusers. She wore leg shackles that could be heard rattling when she walked into the courtroom. Prosecutors said he couldn’t have done so without the help of Maxwell, his longtime companion.
