Derided for his inability to take command with his spin in the 2016 series against Sri Lanka, Lyon failed to take a five-wicket haul in the 3-0 flogging then. Lyon claimed figures of 5-90 to help bowl Sri Lanka out for 212 just after tea on the opening day of the two-Test series, before the tourists went to stumps at 3-98 in Galle. But as is so often the case on the sub-continent, a sting in the tail was still to come. Five for Lyon as spin dominates action-packed first day (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Niroshan Dickwella's counter-attacking half-century and Ramesh Mendis' double-strike keep Sri Lanka in the contest.

He did the same to the left-arm orthodox of Embuldeniya before Karunaratne finally brought on his only specialist offspinner, Ramesh, in the fourth over to the two left-handers and the game changed. Lyon's fifth came via a stunning catch at mid-on from Khawaja, when he flew across to hold on to a well-struck swipe from Lasith Embuldeniya. Sri Lanka lost their last four wickets for 19 runs as debutant Jeffrey Vandersay holed out off Swepson to end the innings. He got good support initially fromAngelo Mathews. But Lyon was able to eventually force a mistake with Warner taking a third superb catch at leg slip to dismiss Mathews for 39. The next ball was slower at 82kph, drifting into leg stump and spinning even more to catch a thicker edge off Dinesh Chandimal's bat. The first was at 87kph, drifting into middle and leg, and spinning sharply across Dhananjaya de Silva to catch his outside edge. Lyon's reward came after lunch when he got the better of Dimuth Karunaratne after the Sri Lanka skipper had guided the team to the break at 68 for 2.

With a backdrop of their personal and collective struggles of Australia’s 2016 tour of Sri Lanka and given their recent success in Pakistan, Lyon and his teammates needed to prove they could continue standing up in the subcontinent.

I was really proud the way we came back after tea and stuck to our plans and we were able to get the late rewards and knock them over,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Lyon as saying. Whereas in Australia I will probably stick to my strength which is my stock ball and trust in that. Lyon broke through instantly after lunch for Australia, dismissing the dangerous batter Karunaratne with David Warner taking a brilliant diving catch. Cameron Green stars as Australia build strong lead on truncated day (ESPNcricinfo.com)

Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey also made vital runs as Sri Lanka's spinners struggled for control.

Green played one of the shots of the day, skipping down to Vandersay to whip him against the turn wide of mid-on. Such was the confidence of Green, the dismissal did nothing to curb his proactive batting. The scoring slowed after tea as Fernando bowled bouncers at Green from around the wicket to force him to duck repeatedly. The pair raced to a half-century stand in just 11 overs. The players arrived to see the ground entirely covered and soaked by the rain. Khawaja and Green put on 57 in 77 balls before Green and Carey combined for 84 in just 93 to help Australia to 313 for 8 at stumps when bad light stopped play just moments after Pat Cummins hit his third six out of the ground.
