"F1 drivers are completing a number of complex tasks simultaneously at speeds of up to 200mph during a race, and this camera angle – alongside innovations such as helmet cam - will help our fans to understand the challenges of being in the cockpit. "This is another in a line of innovations we have introduced to our broadcasts that bring fans closer to the action," said Dean Locke, the director of broadcast and media at F1. The move is set to give fans a chance to see how Norris works the pedals around a high-speed lap at Silverstone, acting as a first trial by F1. The footage will be broadcast live during FP1, with the hope of then rolling out the technology to rest of grid in the coming races.

In creating this 'shelf', the team has been able to isolate the airflow's passage over the upper surface of the sidepod. And, just like AlphaTauri, it has resulted in a change to the position of the upper cooling louvre panel, in order that it isolates the heat being rejected from the panel from the airflow passing over the sidepod. The team has made a significant change to the shape of the bodywork where the sidepods and engine cover meet.

F1 British GP: Sainz tops dry FP2 from Hamilton and Norris (autosport.com)

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz led second practice ahead of Formula 1's 2022 British Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris ranked second and third in front ...

Bottas, who had set the pace in first practice with a 1m42.249s, ran to 11th over Ocon and Alex Albon - the Thai-Brit the sole Williams driver to receive car upgrades for Silverstone and he spent a chunk of the session with his right sidepod coated in pink flo-vis. His McLaren was dropped off its rear jack in the pits and then in the confusion, the mechanic on the left-rear corner tried to fit a tyre the wrong way around. A lull while all 20 cars hit the pits then gave way to the fastest soft-tyre running, with Norris soon climbing to the top of the leaderboard as he emerged on the red rubber. In a frenetic opening third of FP2, Leclerc then lowered the times to 1m29.462s on mediums to end the yellow-walled running as the pacesetter with a tenth in hand over Sainz. Sainz set the pace courtesy of his 1m28.942s effort in the first representative dry running of the weekend to sit pretty by a little over a tenth ahead of Hamilton and Norris. After the changeable conditions of the first practice session left only 10 drivers to set a time, the track was a hive of early activity as soon as the hour-long FP2 got underway on Friday.

'Miles off': Door ajar for Mercedes resurgence; McLaren rediscovers mojo: F1 practice Talking Pts.

The teams were clearly sufficiently concerned, as evidenced by the lack of running in FP1 to conserve wet-weather rubber. Alfa Romeo is one of only two teams to bring no updates whatsoever to this race, which may perversely hand it a small advantage, at least early in the weekend, given it will require less time to understand its car. Daniel Ricciardo was 0.2 seconds slower than Alonso as the next-best midfielder. Mercedes, meanwhile, focused on the harder tyre compounds and seemed to reap the rewards. “Not a great start. “I think from our preparation that we had and simulator, the car is miles off,” he said. Deducing race pace is considerably more difficult. “I’m feeling pretty good,” Hamilton said. What’s more, Mercedes has brought a raft of upgrades to the car for this weekend aimed purely at performance rather than troubleshooting its ride quality issues. His next-best lap would’ve dropped him to second behind Hamilton. The Silverstone track suits the car’s strengths through high-speed corners and its smooth surface also helps to limit the bouncing, much as we saw in Spain, where the W13 was comfortably in the top three in terms of Sunday pace. Heavy rain arrived just as the weekend’s first timed session got underway, but it drenched only the second sector, leaving much of the rest of the track dry.

Lewis Hamilton shows grace and purpose to rise above F1 racism ... (The Guardian)

The British driver has responded to Nelson Piquet's racist slur by continuing to demand action on diversity in the sport.

“He has a platform and he uses it appropriately, he uses it for the inclusion debate and the racism issues and the environment. “I hope we can embrace him in a life after F1 to continue doing the good things that he has started already.” For Hamilton, then, the struggle remains but the man is avowedly unbowed. The fans have developed a special relationship with him as he has given them the chance to exult in victory time and time again. Mercedes remain off the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari, their car design has proved difficult to manage and their issues with bouncing a setback to developing and improving their ride. Certainly the seven-times champion does not appear to lack motivation despite this being his 16th season in the sport. Yet there will be no shortage of effort from the British driver and his team this weekend. On Thursday he announced the first grants being made by his Ignite Partnership, a joint commitment with his Mercedes team to improve diversity in the sport for which he and the team have created a $6.2m fund. Hamilton has stood up to be counted, especially when he was spurred into action by the Black Lives Matter movement. It’s not going to deter me from doing what I think is right and doing what I love, which is working in the sport.” Alongside the Ignite initiative he has donated £20m to his Mission44 project to promote diversity. “Would this have happened without Lewis’s initiative, without the investment by himself and Mercedes Benz? It probably wouldn’t. It takes people to stand up and be counted to make these things happen. Hamilton was not only able to draw inspiration from adversity but in his actions has proved to be by far the bigger man, whose influence will be felt for decades to come.

Horner tells FIA “don't dick” with 2023 F1 aero rules (autosport.com)

Christian Horner has urged the FIA not to “dick” with the 2023 Formula 1 technical regulations in an attempt to address porpoising.

“And the devil is in the detail. “I think the difficulty is these cars were designed around a ground effect set of rules they were designed to try and improve overtaking. And the sport has to adapt and change as a result of that. “So I don't think that's the correct way to go about it. “And the most important thing, and the biggest way to achieve stable costs, is stability. This nearly caught out Sainz as he languished in the drop zone after the initial laps in the middle segment, but the Spaniard was able to jump up the order at the halfway point, after which the rain falling ever harder meant no drivers were able to improve and the elimination order was set. Nicholas Latifi was delighted to make it through to Q3 for the first time, but he did not set a representative time in the final segment and so finished 10th and last of the shootout runners. Verstappen had led the way through Q1 and Q2 and appeared to be on course to complete a clean sweep as he also topped the times ahead of the final runs in the final segment.

Horner tells FIA not to "d*ck" with 2023 F1 aero rules (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Christian Horner has urged the FIA not to “d*ck” with the 2023 Formula 1 technical regulations in an attempt to address porpoising.

If you change now for ‘23 the size of the diffuser or the stay, it's all in the bin.”

Horner: Porpoising crackdown heading into 'dangerous avenue' (PlanetF1)

Christian Horner fears F1 could be heading down a “dangerous avenue” with the recently-announced porpoising clampdown influencing car set-ups.

“I understand on the grounds of safety this is being introduced, because the porpoising on a limited amount of cars is obviously at an extreme level, and they are looking into having that mechanism to control that. “At what point do they say ‘you have to run this rear wing, or a certain ride height?’ It’s a dangerous avenue to go down. But although safety is the primary reason for wanting to eradicate porpoising, with drivers having reported severe back pain, Horner feels it is the wrong move for the FIA to be dictating how cars are set up – and also how the checks will be carried out.

Hamilton "fighting for front row" until final F1 qualifying lap (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Lewis Hamilton believes he was “fighting for the front row” in a wet qualifying for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix but got caught out on his final lap.

"But of course it is the British Grand Prix and you are hopeful for something more. "It is not the worst position to start of course, and in the past races I would've been super happy with that. So that was a bit unfortunate," Hamilton said.

Ferrari star breaks quali drought; Hamilton calls for more respect from home crowd: F1 qualifying talking points.

It leaves him eight places behind his teammate and with a lot of work to do to score points. “I think what you saw was you had to build the temperature up in the tyres. And maybe some of them are feeling the pain from last year still.” It wasn’t a pole borne of pure pace — even the Spaniard was surprised to hear his “nothing special” lap was quick enough for top spot — but rather one based on good, clean, tidy laps. “I don’t think we need to do that. “If they want to boo me, they can do that. They all have their own opinions and I don’t care.” The Silver Arrows were up and about on Friday night after practice. “I think if you looked at our long-run on Friday … we looked pretty decent. And Lewis Hamilton had more to be unhappy about than just his lacklustre car. It’s the latest sign of Sainz forcing himself back into the frontrunning conversation after being dominated by teammate Charles Leclerc on Saturdays and Sundays all season. Unfortunately Mercedes can’t say the same about its pre-weekend optimism for a validating grand prix.
