South Africa v Wales preview: Springboks to start Test campaign ... (planetrugby.com)

Reigning world champions South Africa's 2022 Test campaign kicks off against Wales at a sold-out Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Both are safe under the high ball and will be expected to give their side much needed momentum with counter attacks from inside their half of the field. Both teams are blessed with brilliant attackers across the park but in South Africa’s Damian Willemse and Liam Williams of Wales these sides have outstanding players who have the ability to influence the game from the back. If Wales want to upset the apple cart then their skipper Dan Biggar will have to be at his best. They will also be needed to bring relief from the back with long ranging touch finders when under pressure. For Wales, all eyes will be on Tommy Reffell, who is set to make his Test debut in this fixture. He lines up at outside centre in this Test and will be determined to regain that fine form again. However, his game is not just about scrummaging as he also shines as a ball carrier, and puts his body on the line with big hits on defence. Jantjies’ partnership with scrum-half Faf de Klerk is a crucial one as they will be expected to give their team direction as the key decision makers. Despite seldom getting starting opportunities, the 31-year-old has done well at Test level and heads into this clash with 326 points amassed for the Boks and needing just 10 points to surpass Bryan Habana (335 points) as his country’s fourth highest Test points-scorer. These sides met at the Principality Stadium in an Autumn international in Cardiff last year and the Boks were made to work very hard before they claimed a 23-18 victory. Apart from having plenty of home support, the Boks will be buoyed by their record against Wales on home soil. “It is always going to be a tough game against them.

Mallett: 'Only one outcome' in Boks vs Wales (SARugbymag)

The first of three Tests in SA between the Boks and Wales kicks off with the visitors never having beaten the world champions in South Africa in 10 previous ...

“It will be a massive disappointment if South Africa don’t win this by 15 points. “South Africa has never lost to Wales at home, and even though they have beaten us outside of this country reasonably regularly recently, I don’t think that entirely reflects where we are with our rugby presently and where they are with theirs.” “In front of a packed house at Loftus, having played in front of no fans in the British & Irish Lions series, this is a massive game for South Africa to stamp their authority on this series.

Having to follow that with a triple-header against South Africa is almost cruel, but if they're to stand any chance of being contenders at the next World Cup, some brutal honesty may be required. Three months on from the most embarrassing defeat of the Wayne Pivac era, Wales face the most daunting challenge in rugby - a three-Test series against the world champions and current No.1-ranked side.

South Africa v Wales exact scoreline predicted as prop needs 'game ... (WalesOnline)

There are also suggestions that the Springboks could try some new styles in preparation for the Rugby Championship and beyond. With all that in the mix, all it ...

Somehow Wales need to overcome the odds and set in place a set-piece platform because without one it’s hard to see them being in the game. The challenge for Pivac’s starters is to at least keep the Springboks in check, but it’s easier said than done. With the series opener being played at altitude, Wales may well look to adopt a somewhat conservative approach, with a controlled, territorial kicking game, backed up by resolute defence and contesting at the breakdown. That, once again, will be a pivotal area, with the ‘Boks boasting arguably the two best front rows in the world, while Wales are without Lions loosehead Wyn Jones, with long-standing tighthead Tomas Francis on the bench after back trouble. They fronted up and got in the faces of the world champions. Wales are clear underdogs heading into the first Test in Pretoria but there is a genuine concern among locals that South Africa could be caught cold.

They’ve got a very big side, a six-two split on the bench. Captain Dan Biggar wins his 101st cap at fly-half.
