Stranger Things Season 4 Part 2: Release Date, Trailer, Recap, and ... (TV Guide)

Here's everything we know about Stranger Things Season 4 so far, including the first teaser trailers, cast details, and more.

"In Season 2, Eleven goes into the ... basement of the cabin, and there's five boxes, one of which has Brenner's stuff from Hawkins Lab, one of which says 'Dad,' and one of which says 'Vietnam,' and one says 'New York,'" he told the crowd. That part never left the human world, and it once again connects to the Mind Flayer when a group of Russian scientists create a small opening in the Gate — more on this later. In the first episode of the season, Dustin intercepts a Russian message with the radio tower he built to communicate with new girlfriend Suzie ( Gabriella Pizzolo). He shares this information with Steve and Robin — Steve's co-worker at the ice cream parlor in Starcourt Mall — and together they crack the code. The Mind Flayer has followed Eleven and her friends to the mall, and they know the only way to destroy it is for Hopper and Joyce to close the Gate — thereby cutting off the Mind Flayer's psychic link to the Upside Down. The duo and Murray go to the mall's underground facilities with this mission. Rabid rats in Hawkins, which Nancy and Jonathan — who are dating this season — investigate without their editors' permission while interning at Hawkins Post. After being repeatedly mocked for her story ideas, Nancy decides to take matters into her own hands and visits the home of Doris Driscoll ( Peggy Miley) with Jonathan. During their first visit, they see a violent rat that Doris has captured — one of many that she says have been eating her bags of fertilizer. Remember the part of the Mind Flayer that was burned from Will in Season 2? The events of Stranger Things Season 4 Part 1 should still be fresh in everyone's minds, but if you are still a bit unclear about the reveal of Vecna's backstory, TV Guide is here to catch you up. If you're looking for a more beat-by-beat breakdown of where everyone is at the end of Part 1, we have that too. According to an interview conducted by Variety with The Duffer Brothers, Episode 9 will be two and a half hours long and contains more visual effects than the entirety of Season 3. If you haven't been able to stop listening to "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" since the first half of Season 4 was released, the trailer for Part 2 won't change that. The full trailer for the supersized final two episodes of Season 4, set to the Kate Bush song that played such a big role in Part 1, was released on June 21, and it teases a massive battle for Hawkins. "I have this terrible feeling," Robin ( Maya Hawke) says in the footage. Two episodes of the Netflix drama are dropping a month after Season 4 Part 1's shocking reveal about Vecna. Heading into the final segment of this installment, we have many questions about Eleven ( Millie Bobby Brown) and her powers.

Both episodes are visually stunning, with truly cinematic sequences that will have you wishing Netflix released the almost two-and-a-half-hour finale in cinemas ...

Volume 2 has all the elements that made this show a phenomenon: witty dialogue, heartfelt characters dealing with growing pains, and a whole lot of '80s nostalgia. A TV show doesn't have the same narrative structure as a big-screen film, and there are many loose ends to get to. A lot has been made of the inflated episode lengths this season, though I would argue they have been justified so far, allowing for deeper and more emotional stories without the shackles of the hour-long deadline. We were told before the episodes arrived that we should be "very concerned" for these characters, and that warning is indeed founded. Nancy is being held hostage in the Upside Down, the reporter trapped in a nightmare of traumatic memories, the others trying desperately to free her. As the final two episodes progress, the Duffer brothers elegantly weave these plots together – and soon enough, everyone is heading in the same direction.

Stranger Things 4 part 2 review: A barnstorming end to an epic season (Radio Times)

As with the earlier episodes, there’s a slight whiff of bloat to some parts of these supersized episodes, and a few plotlines feel like they could have been left on the cutting room floor. Come back here in three and a half hours or so and just fill in what you’d imagine we’d say (but much wittier, of course). She gets the biggest punch-the-air moments of the series, as well as the biggest emotional catharsis. As before, Sink’s Max is the MVP this season, and she gets plenty of moments to shine in these finale episodes. In fact, the length of episodes in this new season of Stranger Things have sometimes felt like being drowned in engaging TV – like being smothered to death with delicious cake, crushed with endless hugs. Now, the final two episodes of the split season have debuted, and they definitely continue in this tradition.

Stranger Things: Season 4, Part 2 Review - IGN (IGN)

The below is a spoiler-free review of Stranger Things Season 4, Part 2, which is now streaming on Netflix. It may have initially seemed like a ...

From the deserts of California to the slime of the Upside Down, everything simply looks incredible, and sleeker than Stranger Things has ever looked – not that it was ever a slouch in the visuals department. Still, in the middle of that tension, it’ll occasionally halt its own momentum for a detour to the Russian storyline (which takes the California subplot’s place as feeling the least necessary in this installment). It might’ve felt a little more manageable if Episode 9 were split up into two episodes, instead of giving us such a packed-to-the-brim behemoth of a finale. It’s hard to talk about too much without getting into spoilers (and even though this review is running on the day the episodes debut, we’re still going to play it safe here in case you don’t have four hours to immediately jump back into the Upside Down), but we can say that it’s nice to finally see the branching-narrative style of storytelling that was established in the first part finally converge in a way that feels incredibly satisfying. While the runtimes may seem overwhelming for some (1.5 hours for Episode 8 and 2.5 hours for Episode 9, for those curious about the math), the result is that not one bit of it feels rushed. It may have initially seemed like a head-scratcher when Netflix revealed that Part 2 of Stranger Things Season 4 would consist of only two episodes, as opposed to Part 1’s seven, but that doesn’t mean the hit’s big finale is a quick watch. This is Stranger Things as its most emotional, thrilling, and yes, ambitious, a word I used a lot in my review of Part 1, but it holds true even more so for the last two episodes.

They’ve discovered that music can help pull people out of the trance, which is how Max, despite being “marked” by Vecna, manages to escape. The Ultimate Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2 ... (Esquire.com)

After a finale with major character twists and deaths, here's a breakdown of what happened and what it means for Max, Vecna, Hawkins, and Season 5.

She thinks that when Will was in the Upside Down, Vecna saw a scared, but smart little boy—one not unlike the one he used to be—and chose his successor to be the King (Czar? President?) of the Upside Down. This would obviously be a hell of a twist if Vecna somehow lured Will to the dark side. The Girl Who Lived: I wrote about this in our Season Five preview, but I'm convinced that Stranger Things won't end without another one of the kids developing powers. But Vecna also quips that he saw a ton of curiosities while journeying this place, a la the Demodogs. Eventually, we're led to believe that he formed the Upside Down as we know it, right down to the Mind Flayer. In short? Suddenly, we finally know the endgame of Stranger Things. Season Five will see our friends do everything they can to track down and kill Vecna, before he's able to recover and lead a full-on takeover of Earth. Well, how did you feel during the reveal that Vecna created the Upside Down? (But he also has godlike powers to create evil, sentient life?!) In a flashback sequence during Episode Nine's final battle, Vecna says that the Upside Down was a sort of formless, directionless wasteland when he showed up. But the mystery of why Russia is so juiced about harnessing the power of the Upside Down isn't quite yet clear. In Eddie, at least, we learn that nerdom means living a life that is true to you and only you—and sticking by that even when staring into the face of literal hell. While the twist firmly locks the show's past, present, and future into thrilling coherence—we're left with a few questions. Kong, have the guts to have Vecna mutilate one of our favorite characters, and force a friend of mine—definitely not me—to restock on tissues the morning after. But there might be something more to surviving a scuffle with Vecna. Scroll down to the very bottom of this breakdown if you want a couple theories about Max. Sure, Volume One bottled up and injected new life into the series (it needed to after Season Three didn't quite meet fans' hopes). Volume Two? It not only managed to thrillingly reframe Stranger Things as we knew it, but the final moments of Episode Nine set up a fifth and final season that will surely generate wild hype until the very second we're able to press play. In Volume Two, he becomes the rocking 'n rolling embodiment of Stranger Things's motivating question: What does it actually mean to be a nerd?

Does Max die in Stranger Things? (Bam! Smack! Pow!)

Stranger Things season 4 was a trying experience for Max Mayfield. What was her fate coming out of it and will she be in season 5?

Max may not be dead anymore but that doesn’t mean her fate isn’t up in the air. Fans of Stranger Things have been traumatised by the fourth season of the Netflix series. Eleven managed to save her from Vecna’s curse but the creature had already done some irreversible damage to her, rendering her unable to feel or see anything.

In the finale, Vecna tells Max that she’s much braver than her brother Billy was, confirming that he was linked to the Mind Flayer – it appears Vecna was essentially the captain, and the Mind Flayer was an instrument of destruction. "Hawkins will burn and fall, with the rest of this senseless, broken world," he tells Eleven. "I will be there to pick up the pieces when it does and remake it into something beautiful." His fate is confirmed in a news report, the reporter suggesting he is missing and presumed dead – his body hasn’t been found but that’s because dies in the Upside Down, rather than in Hawkins. Eddie was one of the best Stranger Things characters to grace the screen in a long while – you can read our in memoriam for Eddie Munson through that link. Then Will, back in Hawkins, says he can feel his presence, and the hairs on the back of his neck spike. Eleven is trapped, watching, and it’s only Mike’s words that allow her to come back to her powers as he tells her he loves her, giving her the strength to fight back against Vecna. The tide turns as Vecna is injured by Eleven in this weird other dimension, while Steve and Robin fire Molotov cocktails at him in the Upside Down. Nancy shoots him through a window. While this is happening, Dustin and Eddie distract the Demobats in the trailer park in the Upside Down to try and buy the others more time. The Demobats are getting in and Eddie decides to be a hero and distracts them by luring them to him, but he’s too injured. The others head to the hospital to see how Max is doing. They’re going to use Max as bait to distract Vecna while Nancy, Steve, and Robin head to Henry’s house in the Upside Down to attack his body. Before they can take the shot on El, a pizza truck appears and distracts them, and Eleven uses her powers to bring down the soldiers. This takes them into the depths of the camp as they find out the guards have been experimenting on these creatures, with one on a dissection table, others in glass tubes, and Upside Down particles floating around. Joyce explains that if they kill the Demogorgans and the particles, then this should weaken the monster preying on Hawkins as it’s all linked to the hive mind.

So About That 'Stranger Things' Season 4 Ending (Forbes)

This easily could have been the series finale with a few tweaks, but we have one more full season of the show to go, hopefully one that arrives without any sort ...

Her and Max versus Vecna was pretty good, but I do feel like Eleven is starting to feel a tiny bit one note compared to some of the other cast members. Eleven – I feel like the best Eleven moments of the season were actually before this finale, during the flashback sequences where we learned what happened with One, and that she accidentally created Vecna with her powers and started all this. Max – I am not surprised the show stopped short of killing Max, and I imagine that there will be a portion of early season 5 dedicated to Eleven diving into Max’s mind and pulling her out of her coma, which seems like something she should be able to do. I’m sorry, but Jonathan is the biggest dud of a character in this series, and has been from the start, and I just can’t foresee an endgame where he stays with Nancy with what’s going on with Steve. Vecna – This one was one of the more interesting reveals of the entire finale. Will – Another great scene was in the car with Will where he’s explaining to Mike that he’s the heart of the team and Eleven will always need him, while simultaneously very clearly also talking about himself, which Mike misses completely.

But were they?) As Will sensed Vecna’s presence — he was down but not out — otherworldly particles began to turn Hawkins into the Upside Down version of itself. But with Max’s “passing,” Vecna’s final gate opened, ripping Hawkins to shreds (and Jason with it). In the aftermath, Hopper was reunited with El, Joyce with her family and Jonathan with Nancy. (They were fine, she assured him. But the bigger reveal was his speech about being different, which played like a muted coming out (at least to an eavesdropping Jonathan). So the Hawkins gang hatched a four-phase plan that they hoped would make killing One as easy as “slaying sleeping Dracula in his coffin.” In the desert, before Owens could grant Eleven’s request to return to Hawkins to protect her friends, Brenner intervened… The goosebumps have only started to die down after our binge of the jaw-dropping final two episodes of Stranger Things Season 4. Does Dr. Owens die in Stranger Things season 4 part 2? (Bam! Smack! Pow!)

One character who had to battle threats on this side of the dimension, however, was Dr. Sam Owens. The kind-hearted Hawkins Lab doctor was betrayed by Dr.

Though Brenner threatened to kill Owens if Eleven didn’t fall into line, that didn’t happen because the lab they were in was attacked by the military. While that’s certainly a possibility, the more likely explanation is that Sullivan will interrogate him in the hopes of tracking Eleven down. Was he left to die in the underground lab, chained to that radiator? And battle is what those characters did, as many of them went into the Upside Down in a bid to stop the beast from making his way to Hawkins, with shocking consequences. One character who had to battle threats on this side of the dimension, however, was Dr. Sam Owens. The kind-hearted Hawkins Lab doctor was betrayed by Dr. Brenner simply because he wanted to let Eleven make her own choice. If that wasn’t enough hype for the show, it decided to split it into two installments, with two more episodes arriving on July 1.
