Analyzing Saturday's UFC 276 odds and lines between Israel Adesanya vs. Jared Cannonier, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.
YES (-117): FIGHT TO GO THE DISTANCE is a decent value. The books seem to feel that there is a slight edge to the fight not going the distance, which would seem to mean it will be Cannonier’s kind of fight, as Adesanya rarely gets finishes. Adesanya has a 0.21 submission average, but he has yet to win or lose a fight by that method, so toss that out when finalizing your ticket. Cannonier knocked out Derek Brunson at UFC 271, following up a unanimous-decision win over Kelvin Gastelum in the main event in August 2021. Tipico has no influence over nor are any such revenues in any way dependent on or linked to the newsrooms or news coverage. The challenger – a.k.a. “The Killa Gorilla” – had KO/TKO finishes in 5 of his past 7 UFC bouts, winning 4 of those showings. However, Adesanya is heavily favored, so it’s a bit contradictory. The Nigerian-born champ has had finishes in just 3 of his past 11 bouts. Gannett may earn revenue from Tipico for audience referrals to betting services. He won the belt from Marvin Vettori in June 2021, and defended it with another unanimous-decision win over Robert Whittaker at UFC 271 in February. Israel Adesanya aims to keep his middleweight title from Jared Cannonier in the main event of UFC 276 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
His performance at a UFC 276 press conference in which he went after Adesanya will certainly help, but it's the six-fight win streak he's on that has created this opportunity. The two fights have been a great example of MMA in its highest form. Conversely, Adesanya is a tactician whose kickboxing background is evident in the cage. Holloway has earned his right to a third matchup with back-to-back wins over Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez once again showing he's still an elite featherweight. Cannonier always has a puncher's chance, but Adesanya's defense and movement will make it hard for him to land a fight-changing strike. With two title fights and an assortment of interesting fights, it's a strong card from top to bottom. The trick is landing that punch, though. Canonnier has punched his way to the title shot. Jared Cannonier +380 (bet $100 to win $380) - middleweight title fight Alexander Volkanovski will try to add another bullet point on his resume as a champion as well. He is a masterful counter striker. He has defended the title four times with wins over Yoel Romero, Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori and Robert Whittaker.

Can Israel Adesanya deliver on his highlight-reel guarantee? Will Alexander Volkanovski put an exclamation point on his rivalry with Max Holloway?
The man can’t be finished and he’s going to give O’Malley fits as he marches through the best that “Sugar” has to offer. As long as he doesn’t eat a bowl-full of haymakers in Round 1, Barberena should have the cardio advantage and seek to push the pace for 15 minutes. Not that cardio has ever been a major issue for Lawler, but years of wars have taken a toll on him and Barberena’s clearest path to victory is to see just how much the “Ruthless” one has left. Twice. But like all the great champions, Volkanovski adapts, and I’m confident that the 10 rounds he’s already spent in the cage with Holloway have given him a wealth of information with which to prepare for anything that Holloway has to offer. Munhoz is an excellent boxer, so look for him to cut off the cage, rough O’Malley up, and really test his opponent’s ability to control range. “Bam Bam” might never make it into the top 10 of the welterweight rankings and I’m assuming that doesn’t mean a damn thing to him anyway. That doesn’t mean this won’t be competitive though as a wounded Holloway is a dangerous Holloway and you can bet he’ll be scrapping to the bitter end. Pereira has shown decent takedown defense in his brief MMA career and he has plenty of size to work with too, but I think Strickland can wear him down if he puts a heavy emphasis on wrestling. As long as he’s allowed to step into the cage and swing freely against guys like Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown, he’s a happy man. That’s not to take away from some of the excellent headliners and championship bouts that we’ve seen in the past six months, but on paper it’s hard to beat a card featuring three of the six best pound-for-pound best fighters in the world. Volkanovski won an epic battle with Brian Ortega and then dusted “The Korean Zombie,” while Holloway held the gate against two top-10 challengers in Calvin Kattar and Yair Rodriguez to secure another crack at Volkanovski. Adesanya has promised to make magic happen against Jared Cannonier, but much like his spiritual predecessor Anderson Silva, “The Last Stylebender” needs a suitable dance partner to bring out the best in him.

Still, I have to consider that a possibility in a fight that is as closely contested as this one. Volkanovski has shown the ability to make fights in the midst of a fight too, swinging the momentum in their second fight after Holloway jumped out to an early lead. Given the controversy of the scoring in their second fight, it felt like an inevitability we’d see this fight a third time. After all, he used that to weaken the legs of Anderson Silva. But it’s not like the legs is the only place Adesanya attacks. The one saving grace is Adesanya has been vulnerable to pressure if he has been vulnerable anywhere; remember how much success Kelvin Gastelum was able to find? While it’s a testament to how good of a fighter he is – intelligence is a sign of a good fighter after all – it has also made his marketability take a hit. Given Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway appear to be fighting for the legacy of greatest featherweight in history, there seems to be more on the line in their fight than there is between Israel Adesanya and Jared Cannonier. No disrespect meant to Adesanya or Cannonier. Adesanya is one of the UFC’s darlings and Cannonier has earned this opportunity, but it feels like just another title defense for Adesanya. The odds reflect that too. One of the champ’s advantages is his varied attack, keeping his opponents guessing. Rather than look for the highlight reel finish, Adesanya has been playing it safe, staying on the outside of his opponents and picking them apart. I get that this is the third fight between Volkanovski and Holloway, Volkanovski being the victor in their first two contests. He doesn’t have bone crushing power, but if he lands a kick or a punch in just the right spot, he’s just as capable of turning out the lights as anyone. However, despite his talents and unique personality, it feels like there has been somewhat of a failure to launch from Adesanya. Not that he isn’t amongst the P4P best, but the spectacular moments that the UFC was selling him on have been drying up.

Volkanovski has come out on top in the first two fights, but Holloway has proved worthy of another crack at the championship. The Killa Gorilla is coming off a knockout win over Derek Brunson and has finishes against Anderson Silva, Jack Hermansson and David Branch on his resume. That includes two UFC wins, but he's hardly proved himself against elite competition. The problem is we've seen what happens when he runs into someone who brings a certain level of defensive striking. However, inside the cage, he's shown some restraint.
