UFC 276: Dricus Du Plessis Batters Brad Tavares in Bloody Brawl (Cageside Press)

Dricus Du Plessis had a slow start to his fight against Brad Tavares at UFC 276, but found his rhythm by winning the second and third round.

Du Plessis went to the body with a kick of his own, then landed a lengthy combination through the guard of Tavares. Du Plessis was mixing in body kicks and went back to the head with punches. Tavares was getting hammered with punches and was able to survive to the end of the round on his feet. Tavares tried to get some back with leg kicks, but Du Plessis rocked him at the end of the round and capped it off with a huge knee at the bell. Du Plessis came out firing in round two and found success. Du Plessis was able to get back up then tried a takedown that came up short. But while Du Plessis lacked fights inside the octagon, he had plenty of experience outside it, having captured gold in both EFC and KSW.

Dricus du Plessis breaks into the top 15 of UFC rankings (Independent Online)

South Africa's UFC star, Dricus du Plessis climed into the top 15 of the UFC rankings when he defeated Brad Tavares at UFC276 in Las Vegas on Sunday.

(Las) Vegas, I have to tell you something, you have the toughest mother f’er in the world right here in your town, Brad Tavares. Holy smokes, he took some big ones, I took some big ones, too, but damn, that man can take a punch. International Fight Week, that was incredible,” added Du Plessis who had taken a unanimous 29-28 decision after landing more strikes on Tavares than any other fighter aside from current champion Israel Adesanya who beat the Hawaiin back in 2018. Du Plessis landed a vicious knee to the face of Tavares, cutting him open badly. I was more crisp and then I thought ‘let’s keep it here until I need to shoot’. I immediately shot to that single (leg takedown) and that was us, we were ready to do the grapple exchanges. Gastelum pulled out of his fight with Du Plessis one week before the event.

Dricus du Plessis, who fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, breaks into the top 15 of the competition's rankings following his latest victory.

Gastelum pulled out of his fight with Du Plessis one week before the UFC 273 event in April this year. As Du Plessis’ star continues to rise, bigger fights and better opponents are on the horizon for him. There was no sweat, so he was just stuck on top of me,” said Du Plessis, who seemed to tire quickly after the close exchanges. “I caught him with the right hand, I threw the knee … I missed and I stepped back and I slipped. I was more crisp and then I thought ‘let’s keep it here until I need to shoot’. However, enough of his vicious punches landed to provide the South African a unanimous 29-28 result after their three-round slobberknocker.
