The weather looks good for the next two days and the home team will be eyeing to grind in for at least two sessions tomorrow to bat Australia out of that game. Chandimal walked out with a refreshingly positive approach after the early departure of Kusal Mendis and his gritty ton, along with fifties from Mathews and Kamindu Mendis, helped Sri Lanka build a promising lead thus far. Australia toiled hard, had their moments/half-chances but came second best against the resilient approach from the hosts.

Sri Lanka finished day three on 431 for six for a lead of 67 at the Galle International Stadium.

SL vs AUS: Chandimal's 118* puts the hosts in command (NewsBytes)

So far, Chandimal has hit nine fours and a six in his 232-ball 118*. Mitchell Starc feasted on Mathews after lunch, forcing him to flick a good length delivery outside off. It was his 38th half-century in Test cricket and third 50+ score in the last four Tests. He also shared a crucial 83-run stand with Chandimal after Kusal departed. Lyon's off-break turned a long way to LBW a well-set Kusal. SL then fought back to add 78 runs in the first session. Kamindu brought up a clutch fifty playing his maiden innings in whites. A jaffa from Lyon got him out LBW but not before Kusal managed 85 off 161 deliveries, hitting nine fours.

Cummins' tactics thrust into spotlight as Aussies shoot themselves in ... (Fox Sports)

Lyon eventually broke through in the final session, as Niroshan Dickwella (5) found Pat Cummins at short wide mid-on. Dinesh Chandimal (118*) was the star for ...

“I know there’s a leg-slip and there’s a short-leg, but it almost looks as though Sri Lanka are trying to bat out to the close of play here. Nonetheless, Sri Lanka’s batters have impressed by placing a far higher value on each wicket, offering Australia little but the occasional half chance. Would suffocating Sri Lanka prove the best way to attack. The veteran off-spinner had figures of 2-160. In the end, he didn’t snare one. The easier thing to do would have been to lie down, but Sri Lanka came out on day two and rocked Australia by taking 5-35 in a spirited display, before capitalising on that momentum with the bat. Australia might’ve wasted some of its chances — and all of its reviews (more on this later) — but at some point, you simply have to acknowledge the work of the opposition. On day three though, it appeared that Cummins was willing to play some rope-a-dope and wait for Sri Lanka to make the first mistake. Against Pakistan, Australia waited until the final day of the three Test series to strike and claim the match and the series. In the first ball of the over, Dinesh Chandimal missed a full toss, he just knocked it straight to mid-off and took a one, earlier in the day he would have found a gap and hit that for four. Chandimal, however, was on 30 at the time of his let-off and went on to finish the day unbeaten on 118. With chances hard to come by on a grinding day of Test cricket, where Sri Lanka moved 67 runs clear of Australia and lost just four wickets to finish the day 6-431, Australia didn’t help themselves.
