Rodrigo agrees new City contract (Manchester City FC)

Rodrigo has signed a new three-year extension to his Manchester City contract, a deal which means the 26-year-old will remain at the Club until June 2027.

They are completely committed to helping me become the best player I can be, and I appreciate their hard work. That is a manager’s dream, and I know Pep loves working with him. “Joining City in 2019 is the best decision I have made in my career,” he said. "It’s not an easy position," Rodri said reflecting during last term. "We are more than satisfied. “We have been very successful since I came here, which is something that makes me very proud. “He has improved a lot since coming here and, for me, he is now one of the best in the world in his position.” It says everything about his character, intelligence and diligence that on top of his endeavours on the pitch, Rodrigo also found time to complete a degree in Management and Business Administration. It’s all underscored with a keen intelligence and sharp understanding of the needs of the role itself – and of his team-mates. The fans have been amazing with me, I feel totally supported by the Club and the manager pushes me every single day. He says he has loved his time at City and feels it is the best place for him to continue developing his game. The midfielder, who has continually improved since joining City in the summer of 2019, has made 151 appearances in his three seasons at the Etihad and has 33 international caps for Spain.

All good things come to an end, I guess this is the end of my first chapter, the story doesn’t end here. Oduroh was captain as City won the under-18 Premier League national title in 2021, and he stepped up last season to play a regular role for the under-23 side.

Report: Chelsea Want To Complete Signing of Manchester City's ... (Sports Illustrated)

Chelsea are expected to ramp up their pursuit of Nathan Ake, according to a report. The Dutchman has been persistently linked with a move to Stamford Bridge ...

The Netherlands international has always been a solid performer when called upon, and has never complained over his lack of game-time, so is arguably deserving of a move away in search of more regular minutes. A move to Chelsea could guarantee him more regular game-time, given the club have just lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. However, Ake struggled to break into the Blues' starting eleven during his first spell at the club, and was sold to Bournemouth in 2017.

Man City 'learn Jules Kounde price tag' and more transfer rumours (Manchester Evening News)

The latest Man City transfer gossip in the summer window as Nathan Ake and Raheem Sterling close in on moves to Chelsea.

Chelsea are targeting the City centre-back as Thomas Tuchel looks to rebuild his defence after a number of summer departures. Lawrence is a product of the Toffees' academy but hasn’t yet signed on as a scholar at Goodison Park. City would have to pay a fee under the Bosman ruling. City signed Ake from Bournemouth just two years ago, but in his two seasons at the Etihad the Dutch defender has failed to establish himself as a regular starter with Guardiola preferring to play Ruben Dias, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte. The fact that Ake has another three years left on his current contract means City will be keen to recoup — if not turn a profit on — the £41m they paid for him in 2020.

His versatility is seen as an attractive proposition by head coach Thomas Tuchel, with the player able to operate at centre-back, left-back and left wing-back. A former Chelsea player, Ake is keen on a return to the club and therefore it is not anticipated that personal terms will be a stumbling block. Sources have informed 90min that a £45m fee has been agreed with Man City for the Netherlands international, although the exact structure of the deal and add-on sums are yet to be finalised.

Man City have just made their most significant signing of the summer (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City have made four signings this summer, but a contract extension for Rodri could be their most significant bit of business.

So with a coach who truly believes in him, and an in-built appetite to improve from a sensational season, Rodri may prove to be City's most important signature of the summer. I need to be risky in some parts of the pitch, I can do more assists. Try to understand the moment of the games, that's the key to being a good holding midfielder because it's the clock of the team. "The fact that don't miss passes because you play in a risky position, try to be safe. Be a sponge, take the good things of other players and take it into my game. It is good the confidence we have in each other, and it is one of the reasons that made me continue here.”

These loans then enhance the financial value of the players and facilitate their sale for a profit. As with Chelsea, there will be criticism for the moral aspect of the model. This is all made smooth by the City Football Group nexus of clubs that has Manchester City at its head. They focus a portion of their recruitment at a later age (17-19). They are not averse to these players making the first team (although Oleksandr Zinchenko is the only one to do so to date), but that is not necessarily the aim. The success stories are obvious: Mason Mount was loaned to Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County, Reece James to Wigan, Andreas Christensen to Borussia Mönchengladbach. So too are the sales: Nathan Ake, Dominic Solanke, Patrick van Aanholt, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori. All of those joined Chelsea at 16 or under. Chelsea were the first English club to undertake a “loan farm” strategy.

Liverpool truth laid bare by £140m Man City transfers that offer ... (Liverpool.com)

In 2015, Liverpool sold Raheem Sterling to Manchester City for £49m, making him, at the time, the most expensive English player in history.

Yes, the £45m man’s minutes were always likely to be hit by the arrival of Erling Haaland, but this is still a striker with 90 goals and assists in 159 Premier League games. These deals may indicate that, for the 2022/23 campaign at least, City don’t view Chelsea as a genuine threat. And that’s not the only business the two clubs are doing. Sterling was one of the best youngsters Liverpool had ever produced, and so losing him to a fellow Premier League side only amplified the pain. Liverpool tried desperately to keep Sterling, offering him a £100,000-per-week contract and turning down two offers from City, but they ultimately relented and granted his wish. They had finished second in 2014/15, runners-up to champions Chelsea, while Liverpool were down in sixth, eight points off the top four.

City would pip Sterling’s old club Liverpool to the title by one point, and his two goals in the FA Cup final win over Watford saw him named the PFA Young Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sterling played his part to the full, scoring 23 goals in 45 games – he also had his first Premier League winner’s medal to go with the Carabao Cup triumph earlier in the season. He made his debut a month later in a 3-0 win away to West Brom and scored his first City goal against Watford at the end of August. Of the many memorable moments of his career with City, his winning goal deep into added time away to Bournemouth in August 2017 will stick in the mind of those who witnessed his celebration with the travelling fans and subsequent sending off moments later for a second bookable offence. “He will be forever part of Manchester City and we wish him well in the next chapter of his career and he departs knowing he will always be welcomed at this football club.” “He has played a very important part of the successes we’ve had in recent seasons and his dignity on and off the field has been an inspiration to many.

That means transitioning from defence to attack as quickly as possible, whether it’s Ederson slamming the ball more than 80 yards to a forward or playing a precision pass through pressing forwards for Rodri to start an attack. Everything is related to an in-match scenario, and splitting pressers can quickly get City teams on the front foot. That terrible mistake was to play a pass from the centre of midfield to a full-back with time and space to start an attack. More important is pressing to get the ball back quickly, closing down opponents and working as a team. But how different is the coaching they receive to the instruction I was given on a wind-lashed, muddy, sloping pitch far too long ago? As a 10-year-old learning the art of football, I can remember making a tactical error that led to a teacher stopping a match midway through to launch a personal rebuke.
