(Himesh Patel, unlikely to win, is still nice to see.) Analysis: Well, hello Hulu. Academy voters clearly loved “ Dopesick,” the streamer’s thorough (and thoroughly heartbreaking) series about the opioid epidemic. We’re a little surprised to not see “The Staircase,” which earned top acting nods, or the well-reviewed “Maid,” which landed Margaret Qualley a lead actress nom, in the mix. Garfield seems the front-runner here, capping a great year for him. Analysis: The talent in this category is top-notch, and several actresses — Colette, Garner and Paulson — have earned multiple nods from the academy during their careers. The most interesting nominations here are “Severance” star Adam Scott, better known for his comedy chops, and Critics’ Choice winner Lee Jung-jae of “Squid Game.” Analysis: Fans of newcomers “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” will be happy to see the critically acclaimed shows appear in this category alongside a hefty number of return nominees. Critics’ Choice winner Melanie Lynskey getting another award for “Yellowjackets” would be a nice conclusion to a long-overdue year of attention; Zendaya, who won the year after Comer, tends to receive tons of attention but really put her all into this past season of “Euphoria.” Reese Witherspoon, who beat out co-star Jennifer Aniston for a “Morning Show” nod this year, doesn’t seem likely to win. Note the lack of network shows, though – there was apparently no love for “ This Is Us” in its final season. HBO’s “Euphoria” is a pleasant surprise, but only to an extent considering Zendaya’s big win at the 2020 ceremony. But in a win for Hulu, the streaming service’s breakout comedy-mystery “Only Murders in the Building” also landed 17 nominations, with acting noms for Steve Martin and Martin Short, though the Television Academy curiously snubbed co-lead Selena Gomez. Jerrod Carmichael was the only guest host to garner a nomination, for his memorable episode shortly after the infamous Oscars slap.

“Well, I haven’t,” he says with a laugh. “Look, it’s always a pleasure to be there,” he says. “As the season goes on, there’s a big surprise that happens between my character and Marty’s,” Lane teases. Lane is nominated for his work in OMITB’s standout seventh episode, “The Boy from 6B,” which heavily features ASL. If Lane’s jubilation about his nomination is tempered, it’s by the omission of his costar in that episode. Given that the show was just recently renewed for a third season, it’s unclear if Lane returns, although he appears to be on board. “It was kind of a big surprise, because when I was asked to do the show,” he says, “I had imagined it was just going to be comedy—and to get to work with Marty [Short] and Steve [Martin] would be lovely.

Disney, for example, owns ABC, FX, Freeform, ESPN, Hulu and Disney+, and has a total of 147 nominations. Netflix is famous for its sheer amount of content, but executives have shown a desire to be choosier with their programming. HBO recently changed ownership again and is now part of the combined Warner Bros. Discovery, run by David Zaslav. HBO and HBO Max are, in fact, different networks, but they are treated as interchangeable in the Emmy counts. “When it was just HBO, obviously the world changed with streaming, so we added a streaming component, and now we’re playing on a more level playing field,” Bloys said. “Now we’ve got more at bats.
The Emmy nominations have arrived, and Succession leads the pack in most nods, followed closely by Ted Lasso and The White Lotus.

“I had no idea I would be a part of this today,” Zendaya told Vanity Fair on Tuesday afternoon, shortly after learning she had been nominated for four Emmys.
“I feel like I can [direct] more and more every day as I stand next to them, and they let me slowly take on more and more responsibilities and let me put in my two cents. The intention was just to work with Lab [i.e. Euphoria composer Labrinth] in a deeper sense, and he always creates such a warm environment to collaborate,” she said. I want you to have a good introduction to directing. “The show obviously means so much to me and so much to everyone who makes it. I’ve already talked to so many people on FaceTime, and I have a lot more texts to send out. People put their absolute heart and soul into this, and I am so lucky to share this with all of them.

There's been record TV production this year - so why were so many categories dominated by performers from a handful of shows?

Popular HBO limited series The White Lotus also received 20 nominations, with fan favorite Jennifer Coolidge receiving an individual nomination, along with most of the cast. Another Emmys favorite, Ted Lasso, received 20. While Gomez was not nominated for her lead role in Only Murders In The Building, she did recieve a nomination as one of the show’s producers, only the second time in history a Latina producer was nominated.

Bad, bad, bad: No Outstanding Drama nomination for Pachinko?! It feels like the Emmys choose to acknowledge just one foreign-language series per year, and in 2022, that distinction went to Netflix’s Squid Game. Yes, it’s a very deserving, very fitting series for our current “Capitalism is bad!” moment. It’s a bit of physical acting that says so much about who Balwani has become and how these former lovers and business partners now view each other, and in a couple of seconds, it is more believable than anything Sebastian Stan does in Pam & Tommy. Sorry to that man, but his spot should’ve been Andrews’s. But Pachinko is a beautifully crafted family epic that considers the weight of our history and the malleability of our memories, and the fact that it was ignored fully — from its lush cinematography to its flawless ensemble — is a pretty bleak reflection of what kind of storytelling the Emmys is ignoring. There is a moment in The Dropout finale when Amanda Seyfried’s Elizabeth Holmes is curled up in the lap of Naveen Andrews’s Sunny Balwani. He makes a move as if he is going to smooth her hair in comfort but ultimately clenches his fist in unspoken rage, and I’ve been thinking about it for weeks. Bad, bad: It is completely unacceptable that these people did not nominate Station Eleven for Outstanding Limited Series. Himesh Patel was nominated for outstanding performance, and the show did get several other nominations: writing, directing, editing, and score. There is more texture in that show and that relationship than in many of the more high-profile nominees. The season focused on Jennifer Aniston’s chaotic return to network TV, which Aniston gives a fascinatingly angry and compelling spin, while Witherspoon was sidelined in plots about dyeing her hair, trying to take care of her wayward brother, and suddenly falling into a relationship with Julianna Margulies, a development that could’ve been compelling for a character from a vague “conservative background” but goes underexplored. Some of the best writing of the year, as far as we’re concerned. The White Lotus and Dopesick sopped up a huge chunk of the limited-series category, which is simply bananas in a year in which approximately 8,000 limited series were released. (But also, when will we, as a culture, see the genius of Natasia Demetriou?) And with Black creators and talent still so underrecognized by awards bodies, it’s worth calling out how rare it is for a show created by a Black woman with a majority-Black cast to get such extensive Emmys love. As a meaningful measure of the best television, though, when Reservation Dogs wasn’t nominated for best comedy, and neither Station Eleven nor Pachinko got best-series nods … well, at least the Academy remembered Yellowjackets.
The Emmys need to evolve or make way for more relevant awards.
It’s not about whether or not it was any good—we’ve sat down and watched all kinds of crap together in the past, y’all (cough, True Blood summers, cough)—it’s the fact that even when movie stars and movie directors are deigning to do television (despite calling it a “10-hour movie”), that doesn’t move the needle. Despite a strong nominations field, without a radical expansion and categories updated to reflect our current watching reality, the Emmys will continue to drift into obscurity. And frankly, it’s absurd to think that Emmy voters, let alone regular viewers, would have the time to really evaluate all the available material in the first place. It’s just that these awards don’t—and currently can’t—begin to touch the depth and breadth of current television. (Yellowjackets, Squid Game, The Great to name but a few). I’m genuinely happy for every deserving creator and performer who gets nominated. Every year for over a decade, I’ve dutifully put out an “Emmy nominations wish list,” woken up early to report on the nominations, and then written a “snubs and surprises” piece to break it all down.
We understand there's too much TV, but we're still lamenting that these quality shows didn't earn a single Emmy nomination this year.
This riotously funny, tragically underrated HBO Max comedy would have plenty of sharp, satirical jokes to say about its lack of Emmy success — which is a silver lining, we guess. We were pulling for comedian Bridget Everett to get a nod for her career-best work in HBO’s midlife crisis dramedy. Maybe Emmy voters didn’t even know these shows existed, and this will be the nudge they need to nominate them next year? It’s hard to get too worked up about Emmy snubs when there are dozens of channels and hundreds of shows out there competing for a precious few nomination slots. (Yay, Abbott Elementary! Bravo, Rhea Seehorn!) But still, we’re a little dumbfounded that there are quite a few quality TV shows out there that somehow managed to not earn a single Emmy nomination in any category. And we’re happy to see the very worthy shows and performances that were honored at this year’s Emmy nominations.

If you’re invested in the streaming wars, HBO and HBO Max scooped the most nominations this year, racking up 140 in total, while Netflix only received 105. - Barry, 14 Emmy nominations Meanwhile, Lizzo will go toe-to-toe with RuPaul for outstanding competition program after the release of Big Grrrls, Julie Andrews (Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton) is up against Stanley Tucci (Bitsy in Central Park) for outstanding character voice-over performance, and David Attenborough and Barack Obama are in the running for outstanding narrator following the premieres of The Mating Game and Our Great National Parks, respectively. Critics’ favorite Yellowstone got overlooked, too, as did newcomers Pachinko, Reservoir Dogs, and Maid. (While Margaret Qualley did get recognized in the outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie category, mother Andie MacDowell got shut out of the outstanding supporting actress line-up.) And even though Only Murders in the Building scooped 17 nominations in total, Selena Gomez got passed over for the chance to win an acting statuette, and Stranger Things fans are convinced Sadie Sink got robbed of a best supporting actress spot. Melanie Lynskey for Yellowjackets; Andrew Garfield for Under the Banner of Heaven; Oscar Isaac for Scenes from a Marriage; Amanda Seyfried for The Dropout; Lily James for Pam & Tommy; Elle Fanning for The Great; Kaitlyn Dever for Dopesick; and Sydney Sweeney for both Euphoria and The White Lotus. Sydney Sweeney - The White Lotus Another distinction worth noting is that the Comedy and Drama submissions were left to the discretion of producers, as opposed to arbitrary rules regarding episode runtimes. Though there are currently enough TV and streaming shows out there to serve as nominees for a dozen different award shows, the annual Emmy Awards remain the top-tier honors for the medium’s biggest shows.
