They have extended an invitation to President Cyril Ramaphosa to witness the opening of this borehole in the event he visits Nelson Mandela Bay on this day.

He added that the collaboration between the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Business Chamber and its members and Gift of the Givers in dealing with the Day Zero challenge is memorable. "Providing boreholes at various schools serves learners, educators, their families and surrounding communities, many of which have large numbers of informal settlements, the inhabitants of which are in dire economic circumstances and require compassionate assistance. "Working closely with the municipality engineering team led by Barry Martin, Gift of the Givers will provide JoJo tanks to the fifty water collection points being set up by the municipality.

OPINION | Mmamoloko Kubayi: Let's make Mandela Day significant ... (News24)

Mandela Day is a reminder for us to become human; and you can never be human if you don't care about the next human being, writes Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi.

Our call this year, as we celebrate Mandela Day, is for us to recommit to rebuilding better communities together as a human race so that we can nourish future leaders. How do we give hope to a girl child who needs to be reminded that getting married as a teenager is not the only hope of survival? Every parent needs to internalise the idea that: every child in our community is my child, therefore, I have a responsibility to protect, nurture and guide him/her. We have given away our power to be equal partners in building the future country we want to see. How do we give hope to the boy child in Cape Flats, who needs to learn that gangsterism is not the only way to put food on the table? What is it that we can do to remind them that they too are part of the human family? This year we have families mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape who are still battling the after-effects of the natural disasters.

We need to consider the future and the consequences of our current decisions and actions on coming generations. Mandela epitomised an ethics of responsibility with his transparency, moral character, and wisdom. With respect to this, Levinas further argues that I am “responsible for a total responsibility, which answers for all in the others, even for their responsibility. We must act “in the light available to us”. And sometimes that light ís available, but we still make mistakes. The second central idea of an ethics of responsibility is that we cannot focus on values that only consider circumstances and interests of human beings in the present. What we desperately need in South Africa is an ethics of responsibility.

The Equal Opportunity Act presently seeks to protect people against discrimination as it relates to the following four categories: employment, education, the provision of goods and services and the provision of accommodation. Additionally, we should be vocal against the very appearance of injustice when we see it and encourage others to do the same. Values such as persistent determination, a deep commitment to justice; human rights, fundamental freedoms and a profound belief in the equality and dignity of every man and woman. Restrictive laws governed every aspect of people’s lives, dictating where they could live, work and travel, as well as restricting their access to education, healthcare and other social services. I remember very clearly being told by one of his ministers that when cabinet met for the first time, there were many icons in the fight against apartheid present. “We are fortunate to have lived in the time of Mandela and to see and experience history as it unfolded.

In the same vein we should criticise other roleplayers in politics, the corporate sector and civil society. We should not be afraid to criticise it for the pervasive corruption and the lack of ethical leadership and governance. Creating such systems requires that we pay attention to racial and gender justice. Buti also promised Madiba that churches will offer courageous and sharp criticism should his government betray the vision of dignity for all, healing of wounds for all, justice for all, and freedom and equality for all. Instead, we should judge the once-cherished liberation movement as a political party that governs the country. We simultaneously have reason to celebrate and to mourn. The vice-chair of the synod, the Rev Sam Buti of Alexandra in Johannesburg, welcomed Madiba and expressed appreciation for his exemplary leadership. Others accuse him of making it very difficult, if not impossible, for successive governments to bring about socioeconomic liberation for the majority. We should not be distracted, but persevere and stay focused Some claim Madiba and his negotiation team did not make adequate provision for the restructuring of the political and economic system to ensure the eradication of poverty, unemployment and inequality. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. We have not taken the final step of our journey, but the first step on a longer and even more difficult road.”

The Forgood platform is intended to assist people to find skills-based volunteering and donation opportunities online. “At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, it could be argued that the social contract between the people and government was high, with strong adherence to lockdown restrictions.
