In June 2020, seven people from Masiphumelele in the Western Cape died of methanol poisoning after drinking homemade alcohol. The easy availability of cheap industrial alcohol, and the lacuna that currently exists in the context of ales, appears to further facilitate the illicit market,” the document stated. “The production of illegal liquor is a multifaceted problem and is also influenced by efforts to evade excise duties on alcoholic beverages. The death certificates still read “Under Investigation”. They must not take us [for fools] as we don’t know and if you don’t have money in South Africa you are nothing.” What we want to know is exactly what killed our children.”

Investigators have found traces of the toxic chemical methanol in the bodies of 21 teenagers who died in a nightclub in South Africa last month.

At least seven people were shot dead in similar attacks elsewhere in South Africa over the weekend. Others felt dizzy and fell asleep on the sofa and died,” the minister said shortly after the incident. And they were pushed to the side and others kept dancing. It is not used in the production of alcohol sold for human consumption. “The first way it gets into the body is to ingest it. But it is a byproduct from other chemicals, so it could have been something else.

South African police said final toxicology reports will determine whether anyone faces criminal charges in the teenagers' deaths.

"The cause of death is a very sensitive issue," Ramaphosa said. Officers found most of the teenagers dead. The toxic alcohol is used industrially as a solvent, pesticide and alternative fuel source. Two died at a clinic, one died on the way to a hospital and one died at the hospital. “Methanol has been detected in all the 21 individuals that were there; however, there is still progressive analysis of the quantitative levels of methanol and whether it could have been the final cause of death,” Matiwane said at the news conference in East London. South African officials said Tuesday that the toxic chemical methanol has been identified as a possible cause of the deaths of 21 teenagers at a bar in South Africa last month.

A toxic chemical was found in the bodies of all 21 teenagers who died at Enyobeni Tavern in South Africa last month.

“You’ve heard the story that they are young but when you see them you realize that it’s a disaster. The Eastern Cape health department said there were survivors being treated in the hospital for backache, tight chests, vomiting and headaches. AFP also spoke with a staff member at the bar, Sifiso Promise Matinise, who said he splashed water on collapsed teens in an attempt to wake them up. The youngest victim was a 13-year-old girl and the oldest victims were 17. “I got up and realized that there were bodies lying around. “The sight of those bodies sleeping there … when you look at their faces you realize that you’re dealing with kids, kids, kids,” Cele said. “I passed out at that moment. Officers responding to the call walked in on a grim scene: 17 of the teenagers were found dead in the nightclub. “They dance, fall, and die. I was running out of breath and there was a strong smell of some type of spray on in the air. The teenagers were reportedly celebrating the end of mid-year exams, a local DJ’s birthday and the relaxing of some of the last COVID-19 restrictions in South Africa, which was announced earlier in the week. Two more died at a local clinic, one died on the way to another hospital and one at that hospital.
