Van der Dussen picks up an opening run through a sliver of light in the covers which is tightly fielded. Out comes van der Dussen, and Curran sees South Africa get nothing from the remainder of the over. Potts makes his ODI debut, delivering first to de Kock. De Kock smacks the next, which is wide, but the bowl pops off the top of the bat to point for the first four. Carse comes in to bowl, delivering full to Malan who pings the ball high out to Bairstow standing at deep cover. Then van der Dussen gets his four, a reverse sweep that spins out to backward point. Stokes out to bowl now, taking a lengthy run up to deliver to Malan who chips the ball down and up in front of him. He joins Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood who are out for the rest of the season. His elbow has flared up since playing for Ashington at the weekend and scaring a load of club batsmen, many of whom lined up at square leg to play him. The South African batter picks up the next delivery nicely too, the ball sliding out to cover for a final single. There's an appeal for lbw but amidst the melee, South Africa can run to pick up a single, and two legbyes. Salt, the 12th man, is poised in the deep to mop up a strong attempt from Malan. Malan gets caught by Stokes' well-placed bounce, which pops him on the bicep. He plays another flyer, on top of the bounce which is is powered down the ground, upending a sprinting fielding.

England v South Africa: first one-day cricket international – live! (The Guardian)

Over-by-over report: Ben Stokes signs off from ODIs with this series opener in Durham. Join our writers for updates.

17th over: South Africa 91-1 (Malan 37, van der Dussen 30) Malan has made a superb start to his ODI career, with three hundreds from only 17 games – the same as Stokes has from 104. 19th over: South Africa 108-1 (Malan 44, van der Dussen 38) Buttler can sniff a wicket and has shown it by giving Rashid a slip throughout his spell, but these two batters are stubbornly sticking to the middle of the bat. 18th over: South Africa 102-1 (Malan 41, van der Dussen 36) Stokes continues, and the magic still refuses to materialise. 5th over: South Africa 28-0 (Malan 14, de Kock 12) Curran is getting closer to that immaculate over. 23rd over: South Africa 130-1 (Malan 52, van der Dussen 51) Anything Malan can do, van der Dussen can do faster. 20th over: South Africa 112-1 (Malan 44, van der Dussen 42) Buttler gives Stokes a rest, which he looks as if he needs, and goes back to Carse. He does OK, conceding just four. 2nd over: South Africa 12-0 (Malan 5, de Kock 6) Here is Matthew Potts, handed the new ball ahead of his Durham team-mate Brydon Carse. He was presented with his cap by yet another Durham quick, Mark Wood, who confessed to being more nervous than he was when bowling in the World Cup final. They won’t miss Stokes the bowler, who has a mediocre average of 44 in the same period and is ranked 86th in the ODI world. Another creamy cover drive from van der Dussen, and a stunningly good shot from Malan, who sees a length ball and straight-drives it on the up. 27th over: South Africa 149-2 (van der Dussen 63, Markram 2) Rashid, enjoying his mate’’s moment in the sun, finds some extra bounce to beat van der Dussen outside off. 30th over: South Africa 167-2 (van der Dussen 72, Markram 11) Another regal shot from van der Dussen, the man of the match so far: he cuts Moeen for four, finding the gap expertly. 29th over: South Africa 161-2 (van der Dussen 67, Markram 10) As his second spinner has done the trick, Buttler summons a third – Liam Livingstone. And you could say a fourth too, as Livingstone is two spinners for the price of one, an offie and a leggie.

South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and elected to bat in England star Ben Stokes's last one-day international on Tuesday.

South Africa are without fast bowler Kagiso Rabada but Maharaj added: "The preparation has been very good. "It's going to be an emotional day for us and for Ben (Stokes) in his last game and on his home ground too," said Buttler. "It looks a little bit dry and hopefully it will deteriorate as the game goes on and then if we can get some runs it will put some pressure on the batters in the second innings," said Maharaj, standing in as skipper for the injured Temba Bavuma, at the toss.

South Africa, on the other hand, have played a number of warm-up games to get acclimatised to the conditions. The Proteas will be counting on Quinton de Kock, David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen to perform well. South Africa will be missing the presence of their regular captain Temba Bavuma, who is out with an injury. They are expected to tune in fresh in today’s contest. England batters had a poor run against India and will look to turn around their fortunes quickly. The instance is very clear with less than 48 hours between two different series.

45.6 Ngidi to Brydon Carse, FOUR, not where he intended but Carse gets the boundary. 44.6 Nortje to Adil Rashid, out Caught by de Kock!! Nortje has killed the game in this over. 46.3 Nortje to Brydon Carse, FOUR, smashed! This was the short ball and Carse is cramped on the pull, miscues it to long-on and Pretorius makes no mistake. He kept going at one end but found no support from the others, he departed to Nortje in the 45th over and the pacer wrapped up the innings quickly with a 4-fer. They won a good toss and Maharaj decided to bat, Rassie van der Dussen along with Malan and Markram got them to a massive 333 before the bowlers executed their plans.

SCORECARD | Proteas bundle England out to clinch opening ODI win (News24)

Recap the scoring and interactive commentary from the 1st ODI between England and South Africa in Durham.

46.5 - Comment! That is it for this match. We came into this series knowing we have to play smart cricket, physically it was hard but the game plan was to get into a good position and run hard. We are used to it but it was quite dry and windy. He (Nortje) stuck to his discipline and it was a matter of time before he got his reward. It was a fantastic partnership between Rassie and Markram and we were not able to break that. I thought it was a good toss to win and we could not find that spark with the ball. 10.4 - 1 Run! Anrich Nortje to Jason Roy. Full length on middle, driven to mid on for single. 33.4 - 1 Run! Moeen Ali to Rassie Van der Dussen. Full ball on middle, driven to long on for a boundary. 23.6 - No Run! Brydon Carse to Rassie Van der Dussen. Good length ball on middle, defended back to the bowler. 11.3 - 1 Run! Moeen Ali to Rassie Van der Dussen. Flat ball on middle, played to long on for one. 6.6 - No Run! Sam Curran to Rassie Van der Dussen. Length ball on middle, defended back to the bowler. 3.1 - 1 Run! Matty Potts to Janneman Malan. Back of length ball on middle, punched to mid on for single.

South Africa sink England in first ODI to deny Ben Stokes happy ... (The Guardian)

South Africa beat England by 62 runs in Durham to deny Ben Stokes victory in his final one-day international match.

Stokes now turns his attention to what is a resurgent Test team while Buttler is suddenly the England captain with all the headaches. The captain’s only misstep came when his collision with Andile Phehlukwayo in the field – a nasty shoulder to the jaw – led to Dwaine Pretorius coming on as a concussion sub. After Van der Dussen set up their highest ODI total in England - and the second highest in the men’s game without a six being struck - Keshav Maharaj marshalled his attack smartly. Joe Root shone with 86 from 77 balls, similarly Jonny Bairstow made a return to the runs column with 63 from 71. As he left the field his home supporters offered their latest ovation on a day littered with them. Stokes being Stokes would scarcely have cared about his own demise had England got over the line here.

England toil in sweltering South Africa defeat on Ben Stokes' ODI ... (Mirror.co.uk)

England were comfortably beaten in the first ODI of their three-match series against South Africa as Ben Stokes' 50-over farewell ended in defeat.

It was too much for Matthew Potts on his debut too as he bowled four overs and then left the field with heat exhaustion. Most leave on a bit of a low, as was the case for Eoin Morgan who took a pair of ducks against the Netherlands into retirement with him. This was a moment to cherish, and as he pushed Keshav Maharaj down the ground for an easy single first ball, he looked focused on the job in hand, but as soon as he tried something different - a reverse sweep - it cost him, just as it did against India at Lord’s.

England then looked to target the part-time off-spin of Markram - South Africa covering for the absence of Andile Phehlukwayo to concussion after a nasty collision with Maharaj in the field - but he picked up two vital wickets in his first three overs. Earlier, Rassie van der Dussen (134 off 117) scored a terrific third ODI hundred for South Africa - and first against England - as the visitors amassed a score of 333-5 after choosing to bat first in the exceptionally hot conditions consistent with the rest of the country. No fairytale ending for Ben Stokes as South Africa beat England in ... (The Independent)

South Africa were convincing winners in the heat at Chester-le-Street, finishing with a 62-run win over England.

Root set about compiling a lovely cameo, filled with dozens of classical strokes, two big blows for six and his new favourite reverse ramp over third man. He mustered just five before a reverse went wrong, pinning him clean in front of the stumps. Anrich Nortje wrapped things up by taking the last four wickets, castling Root then seeing off the tail. But despite an early six from Roy, one more than South Africa managed in their innings, they never really dominated the bowling in the way they like to. The tourists batted with purpose throughout, never going for broke but safely racking up a hefty score. Sam Curran, Moeen Ali and Brydon Carse each took one apiece.

'Retired too soon': England's 'sad' reality as true World Cup hero denied fairytale farewell.

He was bowled by a Livingstone delivery that kept low two balls after the spinner dismissed Markram. Stokes had announced on Monday that this game would be his 105th and last match at this level, with the dynamic all-rounder saying the demands of a congested England fixture schedule meant he had to jettison ODIs in order to still give of his best in Tests and Twenty20s. Test captain Stokes did not have a fairytale finish to a 50-over international cricket career that peaked with a player of the match display in England’s 2019 World Cup final triumph.
