Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga all compete for the same position at the base of Arsenal's midfield, leaving Xhaka to a number 8 role. "There is reason why the Arsenal manager needs support in that role. "Mikel Arteta has been looking at additions at left-back and central midfield in this summer transfer window. "Should he play in midfield, a role he undertakes regularly at international level, Zinchenko would compete with Xhaka at Arsenal - and a closer look at their respective heatmaps last season shows that the two play in the same area of the pitch, even though the Ukrainian played at left-back and the Arsenal man operated from midfield. Torreira has entered the final year of his contract and Arsenal are listening to offers, having spent the last two seasons on loan - at Atletico Madrid in 2020/21 and at Fiorentina last season. Arsenal have been in the market for a left-sided defender and were trying to sign Manchester United-bound Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, who is set to join United in a £57m deal.

Where does Zinchenko fit in Arteta's plans for Arsenal? (We Are Hooligans)

Oleksandr Zinchenko is set to join Arsenal in the coming days on a four-year deal from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City for a fee of £30m.

It’s time for Zinchenko to further develop and prove his abilities in the top division and secure his place as a starter for the Gunners. In his more attacking role for Ukraine, he has played in 52 games, scoring eight goals and assisting four. Zinchenko is a versatile player who will adapt his style to suit the manager’s needs and demands. He is a key figure for his national side and has essentially cemented his place in the side’s starting eleven for the foreseeable future. If Arteta opted to play the Ukrainian in midfield, he is in contention with the likes of Martin Ødegaard and new signing Fabio Vieira, who completed a transfer from Portuguese side Porto. The Ukrainian has made a total of 76 appearances in the Premier League, contributing seven assists and keeping 29 clean sheets, as well as playing 29 times in the Champions League.

Zinchenko will become Arsenal's second recruit from City in the close season -- after Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus -- and their fifth signing overall.

Zinchenko’s arrival will give Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta squad depth in the left back position with Nuno Tavares failing to impress last season when first choice defender Kieran Tierney’s season came to a premature end due to injury. Sky Sports said Arsenal will pay 30 million pounds up front with two million pounds in add-ons, with the 25-year-old leaving City’s training camp in America to link up with the London side who are also on a U.S. pre-season tour. Arsenal, which finished fifth last season, begin its league campaign on Aug. 5 with a London derby at Crystal Palace.
