England vs Spain prediction, odds and line-ups for Women's Euro ... (Football.London)

England face one of the pre-tournament favourites in the Euro 2022 quarter finals on Wednesday night.

After a perfect start to the tournament, England will face their toughest test so far as they take on Spain for a place in the semi-finals of the Women's Euro 2022. They finished second in their group, behind an extremely strong Germany side and will be hoping that they can spring a surprise in Brighton this evening. Having been by far the most exciting team of the tournament so far, England will face a very different challenge tonight in the face of a Spain side who enjoy possession of the ball but have taken a rather conservative approach so far.

The offside flag goes up but the replays show White had kept herself onside. Mead drives at Olga Carmona but is marshalled off the ball and Spain confidently play out from the back. During the group stage, England eased past Austria, Norway and Nothern Ireland without conceding a single goal, but the real tests start from this point on for Sarina Wiegman’s side.

Goals and Highlights: England 2-1 Spain in UEFA Euro's Women 2022 (VAVEL.com)

England finally turned the match on its head and is through to the semi-final of the European Championship.

"I try to ignore social networks; it was too long and I'm not going to see what people say because there is no one in the world who criticizes me more than me. Sometimes you go to a press conference and they ask, 'What happened today?' And I think: 'Well, we won 1-0, we're in the quarter-finals. This work and this psychological support are fundamental." I follow my ideas to the end of the world, I defend them to the end. In a tournament, you have to appreciate the win. And what you see on the field is what I am off the field.

Georgia Stanway screamer sends England through to the semi ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Spain had been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the past two European Championships, have not reached the semi-finals of any major tournament since 1997 ...

Some England fans were waiting more than 90 minutes outside the players' entrance for the team coach to arrive, and the lines of fans were six people deep. There is no room for mistakes and Spain are a very good side. That is a battle England need her to win to come through. England are going to have to be careful here. Spain look by far the better team at the moment. England are struggling to build any kind of fluency here. Good work from Bronze, Mead and Stanway to break past Guijerro down the England right. Behind me in the crowd there’s a lot of England fans nervously chewing their nails. Double chance for England after Kelly spins over an inswinging cross from the left with her right. England look on the rocks. Earps raced out and missed the punch but Spain miscontrolled it at the back post. And after Stanway's powerful blast sent the watching nation wild, Amaiur Sarriegi went closest to levelling for Spain but they could not get past a resilient England centre-back Millie Bright, whose performance was immense.

They defeated Spain, but they defeated the doubts too. But it suited Spain. For when possession is more balanced, Spain are able to enjoy some space when they win back the ball. Here England knew that they could not simply sit off and allow Spain to dominate the ball. Spain had ummed and ahhed their way through the group stage, doing just enough but nothing to suggest that they were deserving favourites, but they had also dominated possession in every game. It is her run, stretching the game and placing doubt in the mind of Spain’s defenders, that creates the time that creates the space that creates the danger. Their tournament history has been pockmarked by misfortune, but luck was a long way down the list of defining factors as they were outplayed by Spain, if not quite from start to finish than for long enough to choke those in white who found their breath in the last 10 minutes and then turned the screw with their majestic substitutes in extra-time.

"Personally, I don't think you've seen the best yet, it takes time and it will take a while. "The best thing we can do is play our game, try and keep our possession - attack is the best form of defence for us. "I've got a great group around me who are supporting me and are doing amazing as well. "They will control the ball, but we've seen weaknesses in the Spain defence. "It takes time," she said in a pre-Spain press conference. They're missing Hermoso as well, but I think there are a few things missing, whether that's tactically, there just doesn't seem to be the right things cooking. "If you had told me six months ago, England were going to play Spain in the quarter-finals of these Euros, I would've thought it was a disaster, far too early to meet them. The game changes once you get through the group and the nature of the game is different. We played them before and they had a little more of the ball, but that's OK in certain moments of the game. "They're very tight on the ball, but we have also seen over the last few games that they have some vulnerabilities. Building towards this tournament, they've been getting better and better but if you're still tinkering with your formation and players during a tournament, then what have you been preparing for? We're confident and hopefully we can do what we've been doing in this tournament tomorrow night."

While coach Vilda has kept shuffling his pack in search of a solution, Spain have carried on playing their game – and got their reward in the decisive fixture against Denmark with substitute Cardona's goal at the last. Patri Guijarro, Spain midfielder: "The stadium will be full – it will be a great game that any player would want to play in. Story so far: A record 14 goals without reply in the group stage is quite a statement from this England side. Jorge Vilda, Spain coach: "We have 23 warriors who will put their heart into every ball, every challenge, every attack or defence, every dead ball, every moment of the match. Jorge Vilda has suggested the pressure is all on England though, as he looks to lead Spain to their first semi-final, he has some big selection decisions to make. Amid the questions, one reassuring thing is the excellent form of their centre-back Irene Paredes. If Spain are to progress, they will need another captain’s performance from her.

Dealt well with Marta Cardona before half-time, leading to her removal at the break - but skinned so easily by Del Castillo to make Gonzalez's goal. Like Bright, her long-range passing rarely featured and her radar around the backline was a little nervy too. Only tested in part until Spain threw the kitchen sink at England in extra-time, and stood strong, blocking one Sarriegi effort in particular, to see them through. Was often pressured by the Spain frontline but by and large dealt with it comfortably. Keen to get forward down the right flank, as always. Dealt confidently but comfortably with Spain's attacking play and was left with no chance from Esther Gonzalez's goal.
