And a parallel might be that within our team, we're just starting to really get back the enjoyment for that engineering challenge and the development challenge. Asked if he thinks Hamilton can repeat the trick in 2022, he told reporters: "We started brilliantly [in 2009] didn't have the resources to keep up and were struggling to get near the podium by the end of the year. Could Hamilton reach 400 F1 races? Wolff hints at new contract (crash.net)

Another F1 record could be up for grabs for Lewis Hamilton if Mercedes boss Toto Wolff's hinting at the French Grand Prix is anything to go by.

"Expectation management is a bit of a thing this year, because we were slowly but surely working our way back to the front runners," Wolff said after qualifying. "We can't figure out what went wrong. "Then we were experimenting with tyre temperatures and you can see we are now 0.7s to Verstappen - the Ferrari lap is a bit of an outlier with the tow here with Sainz - but if you would told me we would be 0.7s to 0.9s off the pace ahead of the weekend then that would be a bit of slap in the face." “Someone once said you have not just got to win the eighth - why not ten? like, no performance. Mercedes have a strong record at Paul Ricard, having won two of the three races to have taken place at the Le Castellet venue since the revival of the French Grand Prix in 2018.

Hamilton's current Mercedes deal expires at the end of the 2023 season meaning he only has a year-and-a-half left.

Lewis Hamilton is 37 and would be pushing 40 by the next time Mercedes could deliver a car possible for him to win a championship. The all conquering Mercedes F1 team who have won the most consecutive constructor titles in the history of Formula One have had a miserable start by their standards to the new era of car design regulations.
