Why I Cancelled My rain 5G Internet (Fortress of Solitude)

Here's the good, the bad and the ugly of rain's 5G internet service and, ultimately, why I cancelled. My experience with rain.

Uploading of any kind of data would cripple the download speeds and no one else could use the internet while I had to upload any file. The router was also exchanged and firmware set to not update or towers to switched. My biggest pain during this time came in the form of any uploads that I needed to perform. With the rain 5G option just being made available to the area that month, I was one of the first to have ordered it. As a result, the distance I was from the tower, as well as being above the tower, meant that the priority for my router was weak, leading to poor throughput. Having a flat on the 3rd floor and located on a bit of a hill, the closest 5G tower was located ‘behind’ the complex. While most technicians assumed me to lack the knowledge of the inner workings of a mobile network, which in itself frustrated me, I could pick up some odds and ends of what they were trying to avoid telling me. And this was the sign of things getting really bad with rain. During peak hours, usually after 6pm to about 11pm, there would be a sharp drop in download speeds and even the ping, which made the experience even worse. On the ‘front’ side of the complex, down the road, was the second closest tower. Most of the configuration would be done by means of the associated rain website, which would facilitate where best to position the router for best coverage. It worked out fairly easy, being able to detect all towers in my neighbourhood and choose the best.

Thunderstorms drenched the St. Louis metro area in a "historic rainfall" causing flash floods and road closures.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol asked drivers to avoid interstates in St. Charles and St. Louis counties until after rush hour. A portion of Interstate 70 near the town of St. Peters was closed Tuesday morning, the Missouri Department of Transportation reported. The previous record of 6.85 inches was set Aug. 20, 1915.

St. Louis received the equivalent of two months’ worth of rain in six hours. The Post is tracking a variety of climate solutions, as well as the Biden administration’s actions on environmental issues. Some areas on the northwest side of St. Louis received more than 10 inches of rain in six hours overnight — an event with a 0.1 percent chance of happening in a given year. Have a question about climate change or climate solutions? The National Weather Service warned of “life threatening flash flooding” just after 2 a.m. and later declared a flash flood emergency, its most serious flood alert. By then, 3 to 6 inches of rain had fallen and high water was “threatening houses” while vehicles were submerged in high water, according to the Weather Service. Understanding our climate: Global warming is a real phenomenon, and weather disasters are undeniably linked to it. St. Louis County emergency officials urged residents not to travel and said they had set up a shelter for displaced people. As seas rise, others are exploring how to harness marine energy. Extreme precipitation events have increased substantially over the past century and are tied to warming from human-caused climate change. Emergency workers were responding to numerous reports of drivers whose cars were submerged in the flooding. About 15 people chose to shelter in place.

Telangana region gets very high rain once in three decades: Study (Hindustan Times)

The study, done by the Telangana State Development and Planning Society (TSDPS) under department of planning, analysed the rainfall situation in the region ...

The lowest rainfall in this 70-year period was 559.3 mm was received in 1972-73. The highest rainfall is generally witnessed in northern and eastern parts of the state in June, July, August and September, compared to southern Telangana. It said the annual rainy days in Telangana are 62 with south-west monsoon season accounting to 48. Rao, who is also a consultant for the TSDPS, attributed this unusually high rainfall in the region to climate change caused largely on account of greenhouse gases-induced warming. Similar extreme heavy rainfall was witnessed on July 10, 12 and 14. Another reason could be La Nina effect that causes low pressure resulting in heavy rains,” he said.

Hot Takes with Tate: Normalize spending more time in the rain (The Post)

In the hot summer, it's normal to wish for a rain cloud to cool off. There's also a certain calm feeling that comes with cuddling up by a window to watch ...

Your senses are taken over by the dark clouds, the feel of raindrops, the petrichor smell and the sound of thunder and/or rain hitting the ground. Colder temperatures can weaken one’s immune system, and rainwater can agitate bacteria on the ground and put them into the air, but as long as you’re healthy, there is a low health risk to being in the rain. There’s also a certain calm feeling that comes with cuddling up by a window to watch raindrops fall and hear the thunder.

In the St. Louis County town of Brentwood, residents were forced to evacuate when Deer Creek overflowed. The remarkable rainfall followed a period of extended drought in the region. Most of the rain fell in a few hours shortly after midnight. Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson said at a news conference that many homes suffered significant damage, and some roofs were collapsing under the weight of the water. One person died when a car in St. Louis was found covered in more than 8 feet of water. Several puppies drowned when a building became flooded at Stray Paws Adoptables, a stray dog rescue operation in St. Peters, a St. Louis suburb.

Record rain in St. Louis is what climate change looks like (Yale Climate Connections)

As the stormy pattern that inundated St. Louis shifts east, a multi-day flash flood threat targets the central Appalachians.

As noted in the National Climate Assessment, the Metropolitan Sewer District in St. Louis had embarked upon a $100 million “rainscaping” project designed to divert storm water runoff in the northern portion of the city of St. Louis and adjacent north St. Louis County, including areas where the July 26 storm tracked. The threat extended across a 48-hour period from Wednesday through Friday morning by the National Weather Service, which is predicting widespread rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches on Wednesday and 1-3 inches on Thursday. This area has already seen significant flash flooding during the past few weeks from extreme rainfall; however, soil moisture levels are currently near average. There’s a well-established trend in many parts of the globe for the heaviest short-term rainfall events to become more intense, consistent with a human-warmed atmosphere allowing more moisture to evaporate from warmer oceans and to flow into rainmaking systems. The culprit behind the early-morning deluge was a mesoscale convective system — a large, highly organized complex of showers and thunderstorms — that moved in a “training” fashion from west-northwest to east-southeast across the area. Although the Midwest climate is naturally drought-prone, recent decades have trended more toward the wet side of the spectrum. Please read our Comments Policy prior to posting. The predawn onset of the storms meant that many residents were startled awake by floodwaters or caught on highways during early commutes. Torrents of rain that began before dawn on Tuesday, July 26, gave St. Louis, Missouri, its highest calendar-day total since records began in 1873. “Storm water management systems and other critical infrastructure in the Midwest are already experiencing impacts from changing precipitation patterns and elevated flood risks,” the National Climate Assessment, a sweeping government report on the impacts of climate change in the United States, noted in 2018. Over the past century, the Midwest has seen a 42% increase in the amount of rain falling in top-end short-term rainfall events (the heaviest 1% of events). That was larger than any other region of the country for the period 1901-2016, although it was slightly surpassed by the Northeast in the period 1958-2016 (see tweet below, which includes a National Assessment analysis). Dozens of water rescues were carried out across the area. And the deadly event is just the latest example of a well-established trend of intensifying downpours in many places across the globe.

While mid-Missouri certainly received a soaking last night, the heaviest of the rain was well off to our east. Training storms flowed directly over some of the region's most populated areas along I-70 and I-64, dumping torrential rainfall in the span of a few short hours overnight. This is well above the previous record of about 7 inches, which had stood since 1915!
