Ticketmaster Addresses Bruce Springsteen Ticket Price Controversy (wmgk.com)

Ticketmaster has addressed the pricing structure controversy around tickets for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's 2023 U.S. Tour.

As for the outrageously expensive tickets that led to all of the backlash, Ticketmaster says 11.8% of tickets fell under their “dynamic pricing” program where pricing fluctuates based on ticket demand, and only 1.3% of those tickets sold for over $1,000. About 88% of the tickets sold fall under this pricing. As reported by multiple outlets — including Variety and Asbury Park Press — the ticketing giant clarified the going price for most of the tickets being sold stating the average ticket price for Springsteen’s tour was $202 with the pricing range running from $59.50 to $399 before fees.

It’s a mark of the strength of opinions that this weekend, Ticketmaster published some stats to defend its approach. Not everyone agrees: this Music Ally guest column in March from FanFair Alliance’s Adam Webb for example. If you weren’t trying to buy tickets last week for Bruce Springsteen’s next round of US concerts, you may be unaware of the controversy around the on-sale.

Springsteen Tickets: Why Cleveland fans will have an easier time ... (cleveland.com)

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Bruce Springsteen once wrote: “I'm going on the town now looking for easy money...” And while he was singing about a couple of outlaws, ...

And platinum tickets for the aforementioned Greensboro concert (all close to the stage) started at $829. Ticketmaster was also selling verified resale tickets for Springsteen shows as well. With fans crying foul, Ticketmaster issued a statement over the weekend revealing statistics about last week’s sale of Springsteen tickets. But evidence from last week’s sales suggests a range of $60 to $400. Those will likely sellout fast and then hit the secondary market, which fans have come to expect. Depending on which city you were trying to score tickets in, prices could be under $1,000 or reach close to $5,000. Ticketmaster was reportedly selling its “platinum” tickets for face-value amounts that ballooned to $5,000 before fees thanks to a dynamic pricing model akin to the stock market. The goal is to give fans a safe way to purchase sought-after tickets while putting the money in the artist and promoter’s pockets rather than resellers.

Dynamic pricing is the scourge of real music fans (Fife Today)

Bruce Springsteen's fans have been hit by dynamic pricing. It's been used by much of the travel and hospitality sector for several years.

Simply selling every ticket at face value would still ensure his tour will be one of the highest grossing of 2023, so no-one is going to lose out. This is a cash cow that will roll across Europe, the USA and the UK. He has to speak, and his management team take the same approach. The buck stops with the man whose name is on the ticket, his management and tour promoter. And here's the thing. His 2023 UK tour- his first for six years and possibly his last major hurrah with the E Street Band - was always going to spark huge demand.

Ticketmaster has responded to fan outrage at $5000 Bruce Springsteen tickets by breaking down their "dynamic pricing" strategy.

You may be wondering, how can anyone but the 1% afford to drop five stacks on a concert? As some fans online have loudly wondered if they’ll ever be able to afford concert seats again, the company has taken the unprecedented step of offering a high-level look at pricing strategy through the lens of the first week of Springsteen’s ticket sales (via Variety). The controversy began earlier this month after Springsteen announced a 2023 tour with the E Street Band, their first such trek in six years.

The outcry prompted Ticketmaster on Sunday to release statistics about costs and percentages for the dates that went on sale. "After the long hiatus, we are all excited that Bruce is going back in tour," Pascrell said. Fans hoping to see Springsteen performing alongside the E Street Band in the U.S. in 2023 were shocked when tickets for the upcoming concerts went on sale last week, with prices reaching as high as $5,000. "But Americans have the right to enjoy some live entertainment without getting ripped off. "I have been working closely with my colleagues and stakeholders on revising our legislation and expect to reintroduce the improved bill shortly," Pascrell said. "Prices and formats are consistent with industry standards for top performers," the company said in a statement to Variety.

Ticketmaster further says that the average price of all tickets sold so far is $262, with 56% being sold for under $200 face value. In May, U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey called for an anti-monopolistic breakup of the corporation, arguing its size and its influence created the safety issues that led to concert tragedies such as the deaths at last year's Astroworld. Ticketmaster says those represent only 11.2% of the overall tickets sold. But it claimed only 1.3 percent of total tickets sold so far have gone for over $1,000, sharing some sales figures publicly. Ticketmaster countered that most tickets go for under $200. "This is similar to how airline tickets and hotel rooms are sold."

A couple of weeks ago, Bruce Springsteen announced plans to tour North America with his E Street Band for the first time since 2016. Pretty exciting!

The company also claims that the average Springsteen ticket sold for $262 — which, it’s worth noting, is still very expensive, albeit not used-car expensive. The practice has been pissing off ticket-buyers for a few years, but $5,000 for a Springsteen show seems like some absolutely insane new level of greed. Tickets for the Springsteen shows varied in price, but some of the “platinum” tickets cost as much as $5,000 when they first went on sale.

In fact, platinum seats topped out at a whopping $5000. This was in part due to Ticketmaster's "dynamic pricing" system, that allows the price of tickets to fluctuate with demand. Tickets for some dates of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's 2023 tour went on sale last week and they were not cheap. Defending themselves, Variety notes that Ticketmaster released stats of Springsteen ticket sales, saying that elite-priced platinum tickets only accounted for 11.2% of tickets sold, with only 1% going for above $1000, and the rest falling between $59.50 to $399. Ticketmaster says that the average ticket went for $262 (which is still very expensive), with 56% being sold for under $200.

Fans were stunned by the sticker shock of $4000 tickets for Bruce Springsteen's 2023 tour, but Ticketmaster says most went for less than $200.

“The fact is that multi-billion dollar live events ticket marketplace cries out for reform. “When Yogi Berra said it’s déjà vu all over again, he could have easily been talking about Ticketmaster and another unwelcome surprise for Springsteen fans,” said Pascrell in a July 21 statement. “The dynamic pricing has gotten a little out of control with how demand is going.” The Springsteen ticket prices are in accordance with industry norms for similar acts. Ticketmaster said 11.8% of Springsteen tickets were designated platinum, and just 1.3% of tickets across all shows sold for more than $1,000. Until now, Springsteen had held the line on ticket price cost.

Events giant Ticketmaster has responded to the recent outrage over a “dynamic pricing” model for Bruce Springsteen tickets.

“Prices and formats are consistent with industry standards for top performers,” the company said in a statement. The company claims that only about 1.3% of the tickets sold so far have gone for more than $1,000, with a total of 11.2% of tickets earmarked to drop in price to meet demand. Ticketmaster Comments on the $5000 Bruce Springsteen Tickets ... (American Songwriter)

Bruce Springsteen excited fans earlier this month by announcing plans to tour North America with his E Street Band for the first time since 2016.

The astronomical prices were a result of Ticketmaster’s “dynamic pricing” model, which seeks to squeeze out scalpers and peer sites like StubHub and SeatGeek. The idea is that Ticketmaster can charge a large sum for tickets when they first go on sale and if the tickets are still available later on, the prices might drop. The company then went on to claim that the average Springsteen ticket sold for around $300 – which is still expensive, albeit not used-car expensive. That excitement quickly turned sour as they logged into Ticketmaster to try and buy tickets and found that the high-demand show was retailing for thousands of dollars.

Ticketmaster have responded to their "dynamic pricing" model after some Bruce Springsteen tickets recently went on sale for $5000.

As per Variety, it was reported that “Ticketmaster says [the most expensive tickets] represent only 11 per cent of the overall tickets sold. They also said the average price for a Springsteen ticket was $262 (£217). The model allows Ticketmaster to charge more for tickets when they first go on sale. Tickets for the 2023 US arena gigs went on sale over the last two weeks and you can purchase tickets for the US dates here. “Ticketmaster further says that the average price of all tickets sold so far is $262 [£217.63], with 56 per cent being sold for under $200 [£166] face value…The service further broke down the percentages on the 56 per cent of tickets it says were sold for under $200 [£166]. It said that one per cent were sold under $99 [£82.23], 27 per cent went for between $100-150 [£83-124], and one per cent sold for between $150-200 [£124-166].” Ticketmaster defended the model saying that only 11.2 per cent of the Springsteen tickets sold were platinum, and only 1.3 per cent were $1000 (£830) or more.

Earlier this month, Bruce Springsteen announced the US dates for his 2023 tour with The E-Street Band. The string of dates will kick off in February with a performance in Tampa Bay and continue through mid-April before coming to an end at Newark’s Prudential Center. Fans were excited to get their hands on tickets for the upcoming shows, but prices quickly frustrated some while turning away others.

Bruce Springsteen fans are upset that the price of some floor seats rose to more than $5000 due to Ticketmaster's dynamic pricing.

The pricing of the 2016 and ’17 “River Tour,” the last E Street Band tour, was below the industry average at $68 to $150 for a typical arena show. “At a time where we were supposed to be the most excited and euphoric, it became a time of anger, frustration, and yes feeling of betrayal. “I believe that in today’s environment, that is a fair price to see someone universally regarded as among the very greatest artists of his generation.” And justifiably so,” said Howie Chaz, founder of the Spring-Nuts Facebook group, via email. The system had previously been applied to tours by Paul McCartney, Harry Styles and Taylor Swift, with similar $1,000-plus tickets as the result. “We chose prices that are lower than some and on par with others.”
