They also have the defensive organisation to deal with England’s threat from the flanks. “I will be cheering for England and hoping the Lionesses go all the way. That may be explained by the fact they have allowed only 97 opposing attacks, according to UEFA’s official statistics. Mead, by contrast, has scored with all five of her efforts on target. That’s the only time England’s teams – men or women – have won a major trophy, that being the World Cup. Gareth Southgate’s side went close again last summer in the delayed men’s European Championship, but fell agonisingly short. Start your Independent Premium subscription today. The stakes are high. Steph Houghton saw a penalty saved as England were knocked out by eventual winners of the 2019 World Cup USA. We could be living in a different world had that gone in. As a reminder of how far women's football has come, the 1984 tournament was not granted official status and was played 35 minutes each way with a size four ball. ENGLAND reached their first major tournament final in 13 years with an emphatic four-goal win over Sweden in Tuesday's semi-final meeting at Bramall Lane.
It's a huge occasion for Sarina Weigman and her players. "Now they can strike from behind and I think it’ll do them well. England 0-0 Sweden (10) England 0-0 Sweden (20) England 0-0 Sweden (24) England 0-0 Sweden (29) England 0-0 Sweden (33) We slowly got ourselves into it. "We started nervy. "They're doing something special, they deserve every accolade that is coming their way. It was a hugely impressive showing from the Lionesses in front of a capacity crowd at Bramall Lane, with Sarina Weigman's side ultimately blowing their opponents away with relative ease. The tournament hosts doubled their advantage after half-time through Lucy Bronze, who headed home from a corner, before substitute Alessia Russio produced an outrageous backheel nutmeg that trickled over the line.
England are into the final of the European Championship after a 4-0 victory over Sweden with goals from Mead, Bronze, Russo and Kirby.
If anyone deserved to get in on the act, it was Kirby. After everything she has been through, nobody would have blamed her if her speculative effort from distance had gone nowhere, but after an awkward bounce it ended in the net. Fortunately, the sky had turned black, and the night was all but over from a Swedish perspective. This was an occasion that called for the attack behind Ellen White to use their imagination and Kirby, in particular, has it in abundance. At 2-0, England were sat deep, holding on for dear life when two saves in as many minutes – the second at full stretch – thwarted the danger. Just as Spain showed in the last eight, squeeze hard enough and it is possible to cut off England’s blood supply. Sweden targeted the space between Lucy Bronze and Millie Bright, Jakobsson had time to get her shot away, and were it not for the legs of Mary Earps Sweden would have broken some hearts.

Ellen White is emotional for a reason, the support, interest and growth of the game is amazing. England eventually clear their lines but Sweden have started dangerously. It looks like it will come to nothing but from an angle which defies belief she is able to produce a backheel which nutmegs the 'keeper. Growing up the boys didn’t want to play with a girl, the coach of the boys team would never play me. It's her sixth goal of the tournament and gives England a great platform in this semi-final. The ball is flashed across the face of goal and just evades the boot of Ellen White - Lucy Bronze picks up the pieces and crosses for Beth Mead to turn and find the back of the net. Fran Kirby gets the goal she deserves as she tries to chip the 'keeper, she gets a hand to it but is unable to lift it over the bar and the ball lands in the back of the net. Mary Earps produces a moment of magic to keep out a certain goal - superb reflexes from the England 'keeper to maintain a two goal lead. Fran Kirby manages to produce some creativity when England do get the ball and forces a corner from which Lucy Bronze manages to squeeze a header home. Special praise for a brilliant creative performance from Fran Kirby and a marvellous cameo from Alessia Russo which saw her score a goal of the tournament contender. It was a memorable night for English football, with a brilliant performance from Fran Kirby and a moment of genius from Alessia Russo the highlights. Was denied by Earps in the second half, and was a threat throughout. The AC Milan midfielder snapped at Keira Walsh’s heels all night, and was key to delivering long balls through to her strikers. Hemp used her superior speed and snuck some crucial crosses around her - some leading to goals - and Ilestedt was relieved of her duties within the hour. Her audacious back-heeled goal summed up the confidence she is playing with. After a quiet night in the quarter-final, Mead was looking sub-par for the first half an hour. She matched the Swedish defenders for physicality and her chip over Hedvig Lindahl was a touch of class. As a player who was predicted to have a breakthrough tournament, this was Manchester City winger Hemp’s best match of the tournament. Picked out Hemp, Mead and Bronze on the wings with her usual precision. Played a blinder again, and was England’s most dominant player across the pitch in the first half. Williamson has made captaining England to a major tournament final look easy. Her brilliant cross gave England the opener they needed and she finally got the team its first goal in this tournament from a set piece. Was given more trouble in that first half than she has had all tournament and handled it phenomenally.

Her place might, only might, be under threat such is the brilliance of Russo. She then scored the Lionesses' fourth with a cheeky lob to safeguard victory. The finish was symptomatic of a player in the form of her life. Not quite as poised in possession as usual, but her touch in front of goal was as infallible as ever. There probably wasn't a blade of the Sheffield grass she didn't cover. Missed a gaping goal when teed up by Alessia Russo in the second half, but worked tirelessly. Her goal in the last round stole the headlines and rightly so. Her influence in the final third, though, was pivotal and her game management is always excellent. She was happy to disrupt Sweden's rhythm in midfield and stopped supply into Blackstenius and Kosovare Asllani - the latter's influence was severely reduced after the break. Partners Bright perfectly at the heart of the defence and is a large part of the reason England have only been breached once this tournament. The way she drives this team forwards by building from the back, stepping out of defence with confidence and encouraging teammates to play with the same level of determination she shows every game is commendable. Her relationship with Leah Williamson is the bedrock of the Lionesses' impressive defensive stability.
