Virgil van Dijk and Bernardo Silva prove that Liverpool have a star ... (Liverpool.com)

A potential Liverpool 'weakness' is nothing to worry about ahead of the new Premier League season. Virgil van Dijk and Bernardo Silva are living proof.

And the same is true of Liverpool, who likely envision Carvalho as a starting player at Anfield in a few years’ time. Bernardo played most of his football last season in the middle and in spite of what would appear to be physical limitations, he thrived. Bernardo did have to utilise some strength, holding off challenges with his trailing arm, and gym work will of course be important. If there’s a fear that he lacks the bulk for that role, then it’s misguided, and two of his compatriots prove it. But new arrivals may be struck most of all by the standard of athleticism. Aside from Mohamed Salah, who was in a league of his own, he was perhaps the best player in the division in the first half of the campaign, and he would earn himself a spot in the PFA Team of the Year for the second time.

Liverpool must 'be careful' with Ramsay injury (This Is Anfield)

Calvin Ramsay was with the Liverpool squad in Salzburg but, again, was not in action, with Jurgen Klopp insisting the club must “be careful” with his injury ...

Like Ramsay, Gordon travelled to Saalfelden but has not been part of training yet, with fitness staff eager not to overwork the youngsters. It is a similar situation to Kaide Gordon, who was thrust into the spotlight last summer and, after making his breakthrough with the first team around the turn of the year, has struggled with persistent injuries since. Though he was one of the first players to report to the AXA Training Centre for day one of pre-season, Ramsay is still yet to train with his new team-mates.

They’re very capable of doing so, but we’ll miss Diogo all the same. But it does mean he may be sweating on his place in Portugal’s squad. Judging from Klopp’s comments before, there doesn’t seem to be any danger of a particularly long-term injury.

Liverpool without Alisson and Diogo Jota for Community Shield (The Independent)

Liverpool's third-choice goalkeeper Adrian is set to face Manchester City on Saturday.

He is the heart and soul of this team. The way we played in the last years was only possible because of Bobby. For me there is no doubt about his quality. He underlined that Roberto Firmino, a reported target for Juventus, is set to stay at Anfield for the season.

Liverpool could sign former Manchester United star if forced to ... (Liverpool Echo)

Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher have both missed games during Liverpool's pre-season schedule because of injury.

First-choice for Genoa last year, having enjoyed similar status at Torino for four years, he has been linked with the likes of Napoli and Lazio after finding himself a free agent. Having signed only nine senior players without needing to part with a transfer fee since taking over the club in 2011, Adam Bogdan and Doni ensure that over half of that number play in goal. As a result, while Liverpool’s incoming transfer business is seemingly done for the summer, could they be forced to reconsider that stance and sign a new back-up goalkeeper? Club sources described his setback as “a knock” after he missed the Reds’ pre-season tour of Asia, yet he was unable to return for Liverpool’s training camp in Austria either. However, his time with United did not end well as they blocked an exit for the Argentina international. “And then in a very spectacular penalty shootout he showed the whole range of his skill set. But to be honest for me Caoimhin Kelleher is the best number two goalie in the world as well. In normal circumstances, the absence of Alisson, while obviously felt, would not be much of a blow with Caoimhin Kelleher in reserve. After all, why spend a big transfer fee on a back-up goalkeeper who you rarely expect to play? “And the same for Diogo. Diogo was not here with us so how could he play a football game? So he proved that the decision to line him up was absolutely right. Replaced at half-time against the Red Devils, he hasn’t played since because of abdominal injury.

Liverpool's season will begin with a trip to Fulham whilst they take on rivals Manchester United in the third game of the Premier League season. It’s the last one that we still have to win." The Reds boss is then likely to go with Nunez in attack despite the Uruguayan copping some early criticism, which his manager has been keen to address. A year later they face Arsenal as champions, but were downed by the then FA Cup winners, again on penalties. The Community Shield has, so far, evaded Klopp's Liverpool side in their two appearances during his tenure. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Andy Robertson finished as the back four.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is continuing his Liverpool evolution and he ... (Liverpool.com)

Trent Alexander-Arnold is Europe's top outfielder for an interesting new metric called Fields Gained. It is more evidence of how his Liverpool game has ...

In a simple game, Trent is making the rest look like idiots. Interestingly, Jordan Henderson (5.75 per 90) and Thiago Alcântara (5.46) were now in the top four with him. Roy Hodgson’s dream he might be, the future of football he is not. The metric which highlights the value of Alexander-Arnold when it comes to advancing the ball up field is called Fields Gained. This is explained with the following definition: if a player progresses the ball 10 yards from a point 100 yards from goal, that’s 0.1 Fields Gained, as it is 10 per cent of the field. In 2019/20, Alexander-Arnold was the sole Reds representative among Manchester City men in the top four. Times change, though, and some of the complications in the form of data can be very enlightening.
