Feherty will be counted on to deliver humor to the broadcast. After Round 1, players will be paired by score for the remaining two rounds. The team champions of the first two events remain intact. The top three teams are paid from the $5 million team purse. On the course, the story is more positive. But three months after surgery on the injured hand, his game appears to be coming back. Perez, 46, shot 69 in his first round in Portland, which counted for his 4 Aces team. "And still, the decision was made that I was to be removed." Reed is 5 under and leading on the par-71 course, having birdied the 10th for his sixth birdie in seven holes. The first half of 2022 was all but lost for Bryson DeChambeau, as hip and hand injuries limited his starts. Stenson's teammate on the Majesticks, Lee Westwood, is 2 under, so that team leads early. Paul Casey, the other newcomer, is 2 over.

LIV Golf counting on team-oriented approach as cornerstone for ... (New York Post)

Last fall at Whistling Straits, Greg Norman attended the Ryder Cup for the first time. He said it opened his eyes to the power of team golf.

It would be very, very cool if the teams transcend players and it becomes an element. Merely understanding how the team concept works as the 48 players compete for themselves in a medal play tournament and for a team isn’t very clear-cut. The reality is that much of LIV Golf’s success will be based on whether the team concept works. “I think it’s going to bring new audiences and a different type of draw to the team aspect,” Kokrak added. Because, right now the LIV Golf team element, while an interesting idea, feels more like a gimmick, much like the tour’s shotgun starts and 54-hole format. He said it opened his eyes to the power of team golf.

Majesticks GC (Stenson, Lee Westwood, Sam Horsfield) are a distant second with a score of 14-under par. He is chasing his first victory in a tournament since November when he won the RSM Classic on the PGA Tour. (He and Carlos Ortiz were tied for the top spot through 36 holes in Portland, but Branden Grace passed both in the final round.) Johnson has a chance to become the second player in LIV history to come from behind and win. The quartet of Johnson, Gooch, Reed and Pat Perez are 20-under par. Things would stay that way for Stenson until he got on the seventh hole. The two-time PGA Tour major champion did have the distinction of being the first player in LIV Golf history to lose a tournament when leading after the second round. Stenson and Patrick Reed were co-leaders with matching scores of seven-under par following Friday's opening round. T6. Lee Westwood (-4) T6. Phachara Khongwatmai (-4) T6. Turk Pettit (-4) T3. Is LIV 'the future of golf' — or just golf with a soundtrack? (The Washington Post)

The LIV series says it's 'golf, but louder.' This is what it feels like.

The team element could take time for golf fans to digest, but players have repeatedly cited it as part of the appeal. A news release last week made no mention of the 54-hole format or shotgun starts, but Khosla said LIV Golf is committed to its format for now and that officials are hopeful the OWGR will recognize its events. LIV Golf officials have publicized plans for the future but have made no indication they will be tweaking their competition format. He regrouped and smacked his shot into a bunker as a staffer approached the fan and issued a warning. “Second, when I think a streaming partner comes about, I think it’s going to revolutionize the way golf is viewed because you’ll have no commercials and you’ll have shot after shot after shot and it will capture that younger generation’s attention span.” At times, the LIV product can feel merely like golf with a soundtrack. Fewer than 1,000 people were concurrently watching the Facebook Live feed for much of the first two rounds this weekend, while LIV Golf’s YouTube channel was at or above 60,000 viewers for much of Saturday’s second round. With taps flowing and drinks easy to find across the course, the mood was light from tee to green. Unlike at other pro golf events, there aren’t corporate logos and signage littering the course. And we think we can do that by changing how the product is packaged.” For the uninitiated, LIV presents golf as both an individual and a team sport. With a different competition format, LIV is trying to be more than a fresh coat of paint on a sport that has resisted big changes.
