Heading into the final of the 100-meter breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games, it was difficult to identify a favorite for the title, except that the athlete would likely come from South Africa. In Lara van Niekerk, the race featured the Commonwealth champ in the 50 breaststroke. Racing at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham, it was van Niekerk who rolled to the triumph. She closed in 35.21, which handed her another half-second over her countrywoman.

Australian Chelsea Hodges was third in 1:07.05 and the third SA swimmer in the race, Kaylene Corbett, the 200m breaststroke bronze medallist, was seventh.
