UCount Rewards is looking forward to putting another R1.3 billion back into their pockets.” Recent data from Standard Bank shows that UCount Rewards members are continuing to use their Rewards Points to stretch their rands at the pumps. Now, however, with the price sitting at R26.74/litre in July, motorists must pay over 78.2% more (R1 309) for the same amount of fuel. If UCount Rewards members don’t have enough Rewards Points to pay for their fuel purchase in full, they can use their Standard Bank card to pay the difference (and earn more Rewards Points when paying the difference). These Rewards Points can subsequently be redeemed at a Caltex and Astron Energy to purchase fuel. The programme has enabled members to redeem over R1.3 billion for fuel purchases at Caltex forecourts since its inception in 2013.

Average petrol price falls too slowly despite a 9p reduction in July ... (RAC)

RAC says wholesale cost of unleaded now back to early May price which means a litre should be around 167p, not 183p.

East 31/07/2022 01/07/2022 North East East 31/07/2022 East Midlands 01/07/2022 This is really encouraging because the independents buy new stock less frequently than the supermarkets as they don’t sell as much, and consequently aren’t as well positioned as their rivals to be able to snap up fuel at lower prices when there are sudden market drops.” Wholesale petrol averaged virtually the same last week which should – if retailer’s pass on the savings they’re benefitting from – in theory bring pump prices down to a similar level to what we saw in mid-May. “What ought to have happened is that the biggest retailers cut their prices more significantly on a daily basis, given the wholesale price of petrol has fallen steadily over the last eight weeks. And diesel should be closer to 182p – nearly £6 a tank lower than the end of July average.

Morrisons cuts petrol by 6p a litre in supermarket price war with ... (Scottish Daily Record)

Supermarkets faced criticism for keeping their petrol prices high during the rising cost of living.

The store introduced its cuts in two stages last week in line with Asda by an average of 5p. Petrol prices have soared to astronomical prices this year, but they have started to see a drop in recent weeks. The supermarket chain has cut the cost of unleaded by 5p per litre and diesel by 3p per litre at all filling stations across the country. Tesco announced this week that it has cut the cost of petrol by 6.5p per litre, while diesel was slashed by 4.5p. The UK supermarket chain announced it has cut the cost of its unleaded and diesel by an average of six pence a litre in a bid to help drivers keep costs low. Morrisons has become the latest major retailer to join the supermarket petrol price war by slashing the cost of fuel at 399 filling stations across the UK.

And that is where the fuel trade is forcing struggling drivers to play the pump-price postcode lottery. RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “July has been an unnecessarily tough month for drivers due to the big four supermarkets’ unwillingness to cut their prices to a more reasonable level, reflecting the consistent and significant reductions in the wholesale cost of petrol and diesel. Morrisons makes major change to all UK fuel stations as it cuts ... (Daily Express)

MORRISONS is the latest supermarket to slash fuel costs to help drivers after months of near-record prices.

The supermarket chain is passing on recent reductions in wholesale fuel prices directly to customers to reduce the cost of motoring. “What ought to have happened is that the biggest retailers cut their prices more significantly on a daily basis, given the wholesale price of petrol has fallen steadily over the last eight weeks. The last time unleaded was this price on the wholesale market was in early May which a week later led to a UK average pump price of just 167p a litre. The wholesale cost of petrol delivered to forecourts has fallen for eight consecutive weeks by a whopping 20p from 151.93p at the start of June to 131.75p a litre in the last week of July. Drivers visiting one of its 323 petrol stations will save five pence per litre on unleaded petrol and three pence per litre on diesel. Morrisons has cut the cost of unleaded petrol and diesel by an average of six pence a litre over the last week at all of its UK forecourts.

Falling wholesale petrol prices not reflected at the pump, RAC finds (E&T Magazine)

Retailers are not fairly reflecting the fall in wholesale petrol prices for consumers at the pump, RAC Fuel Watch data shows.

“What ought to have happened is that the biggest retailers cut their prices more significantly on a daily basis, given the wholesale price of petrol has fallen steadily over the last eight weeks. The RAC said that the failure of the biggest retailers to reduce petrol pump prices in line with the drop in the wholesale price of unleaded has cost drivers dearly. The wholesale cost of petrol delivered to forecourts has fallen for eight consecutive weeks by a significant 20p from 151.93p at the start of June to 131.75p a litre in the last week of July. Andrew Ball, fuel operations manager at Morrisons, said: "It's the summer holidays and we know how tough the current cost of living is for our customers. Tesco has made the largest cut to the price of fuel, cutting the price of petrol by 6.5p and diesel by 4.5p. The cost of petrol and diesel have already begun to fall. At the start of the month fuel prices reached amounts of 191.53p for petrol and 199.07p for diesel, making a full tank of petrol the most expensive it has ever been.
