DStv Premiership Report: Cape Town City v Mamelodi Sundowns ... (Soccer Laduma)

Mamelodi Sundowns began the defence of their DStv Premiership title with a 2-0 win over Cape Town City on Friday evening.

Tinkler's troops came to life after a couple of changes, with Mogamat May forcing the first save save out of Williams in the last ten minutes with a glancing shot in the box towards the bottom corner after a cross by Kajally Drammeh. Sundowns kept on coming as Domingo came very close on the half-hour mark with a volley over goalkeeper Hugo Marques that looped slightly over the crossbar after a chip over the top by Modiba. The Brazilians were asking questions of the Citizens in the opening exchanges and nearly went ahead on 12 minutes after Haashim Domingo flashed a half-volley just over the crossbar in the box from a cutback by Aubrey Modiba.

Cape Town City vs Mamelodi Sundowns Preview: Kick-off time, TV ... (Goal.com)

Mamelodi Sundowns travel to face Cape Town City for their 2022/23 PSL season-opening match on Friday.

On October 30, 2021, they fought for a 1-1 draw in the MTN8 Cup final game before Sundowns emerged winners with a 3-2 victory in the post-match penalties. As last season’s runners-up, Cape Town City will hope to go a step further and hopefully emerge as PSL champions for the 2022/23 campaign. The match in Cape Town promises to be a tight affair given that the last three games between Sundowns and the Citizens ended in draws.

Spectacular Modiba free-kick helps champions Sundowns seal ... (News24)

Mamelodi Sundowns showcased champions mentality against Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership opener, earning a victory in the 2022/23 season kicked off.

Both sides return to action on Tuesday and Wednesday against Swallows and TS Galaxy, respectively. However, minutes later, the Namibian came even closer to scoring. The victory was Sundowns and deservedly, while City head back to the drawing board as the turnaround of fixtures is short with rest days only 72 hours. It would edge the home side to push in the tail-end of the game and finally tested new Downs shot-stopper Ronwen Williams, as he catlike jumped to glove away May's low strike. City players were annoyed and furious when referee Ndzanzeka did not point to the penalty spot; that could have changed the face of the game when Mothobi Mvala handled the ball in Sundowns' penalty area. The forward dazzled his way past the City defence to meet a through ball, which he laced with power, only for Marques to make a fine save.

Mamelodi Sundons players celebrate with Aubrey Modiba after he scored the opener against Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town on 05 August 2022.

It’s not far-fetched to think that the S in the DStv Premiership stands for Sundowns — which would explain why the second letter is capitalised with the two that follow it in small letters. Even though they were far from their best, with Shalulile a passenger, Sundowns had enough firepower to start the season with a solid win. Sundowns made them pay, punishing them in the first two big chances they got.
