Norwich City: Dean Smith on 'ludicrous' penalty decision (Norwich Evening News)

Dean Smith has described the decision not to award Norwich City a penalty after Tom Naylor's tackle on Max Aarons as 'scandalous'.

"He was distressed and obviously in a lot of pain. He is looking straight down the barrel of that one, and it worries me if he doesn't see that as a bad tackle." "My reflections on the game are that they've nicked a point and we've lost two.

Norwich frustrated again as Wigan hold out for Championship draw (The Guardian)

With Wigan defending stoutly, Norwich had to work hard for another opening and it was not until the 82nd minute that they went close again. Norwich were on the front foot from the start and maintained their dominance for the majority of the opening period, even after going behind. A beautiful chipped pass from the Chilean Marcelino Núñez then put Milot Rashica in but his lob over Ben Amos lacked power and was cleared. And after seeing defender Dimitris Giannoulis leave the pitch with what looked like serious injury to his right ankle, Dean Smith’s team deservedly got back on level terms in the 62nd minute. Naylor got the ball but Smith felt the challenge was overzealous. Max Aarons had cancelled out James McClean’s opener and was taken out by a strong challenge from Tom Naylor as he went looking for his second goal of the game.

Norwich City 1-1 Wigan Athletic: Aarons rescues point for Canaries (VAVEL.com)

Despite dominating much of the match, Norwich were forced to settle for a point against a scrappy Wigan side.

Will Keane cut out Gibson's pass and, after finding a gap in the defence, fed an unmarked McLean, who slotted past Krul to make it 1-0. Sam McCallum came on in his place. Aarons was taken off in the first minute of stoppage time, replaced by Sara, who was making his debut for Norwich. The Canaries saw out ten minutes of stoppage time to earn a point. He volleyed the subsequent rebound high and wide. Rashica then took advantage of a mistake by the Latics and was one-on-one with Amos, but like Kerr in the first half, he beat the 'keeper, but not the goal. Aarons was the next to try his luck as at the quarter-hour mark, he found space on the edge of the box and although he beat goalkeeper Ben Amos, his shot flashed wide of the goal.

Norwich City: Aarons slams 'disgraceful' penalty decision (PinkUn)

Norwich City full-back Max Aarons has labelled the failure to award his side a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic "a disgrace".

There's a little bit of frustration, but we're happy with the direction it's moved in." A tackle like that in the middle of the pitch would be a red card, let alone in the box. "Officials at this level have got to see that in real time.

Wigan Athletic: Five talking points from Norwich City (a) (Wigan Today)

1 Top draw stuff! Latics may not have come home from Norfolk with all three points, but the team coach will have been full of optimism and buoyancy on the ...

It was a first Championship start together for Jason Kerr and Curtis Tilt. And despite being up against Teemu Pukki - one of the deadliest Championship strikers of recent years - they stood up to be counted as Latics held out against a side that was two divisions above them last year. On the back of last week's stalemate against Preston, Latics have now gone toe to toe with two sides who would expect to be at least in the play-off picture, and come away with a share of the spoils. Up to that point, chances had been sparse, with Callum Lang squandering a similar opportunity in Latics' solitary attack, after being played in by Will Keane. But when Keane won the ball cheaply and slid the ball sideways to McClean, the Irishman was cool, calm and collected as he took delivery of the ball and slipped the ball past the advancing Tim Krul. Latics will heavily rely on McClean's know-how back in the second tier, and the early signs are that he has unfinished business at this level.
