The Jose Riveiro era at Orlando Pirates gets underway against Soweto rivals Swallows in their opening DStv Premiership encounter.

Former Pirates star Musa Nyatama will take charge of the team. Pirates have not lost to Swallows in the league since the latter's promotion return to the top-flight, although the Birds did claim a 2-1 win in last season's MTN8 first-round clash. While a number of key players have left the Swallows squad, the club have brought in the likes of Keeagan Allan, Waseem Isaacs and Kaizer Chiefs duo Darrel Matsheke and Lebohang Lesako.

A single strike by Bienvenu Eva Nga was enough to ensure a good start for Jose Riveiro in his new job as Orlando Pirates coach.

When he kicked for goal he had two defenders around him and his soft shot was easily saved by Mbanjwa. After introducing himself in style to the Ghosts, Eva Nga went on to miss probably the easiest chance when he sent his shot wide with only the keeper to beat and all Thembinkosi Lorch’s hard work was in vain. Meanwhile, there was a lot of good change in the way the Buccaneers played compared to last season.

After all, it was the new beginning for both sides and experiments by the technical teams were inevitable. The PSL clubs could only hope this to be a positive sign after they played the past two seasons behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions. Leading the way with no less than three first-half steals. In one instance, Pentjie Zulu forced a good safe out of Bucs goalkeeper Richard Ofori midway into the second half.
