The new era at Kaizer Chiefs got off to disappointing start as they suffered a 1-0 loss to Royal AM on Saturday evening.
Chiefs pinned Royal AM in their own half in the dying minutes as Dolly had a chance to salvage a point after he was setup for a strike on the edge of the box but his effort dragged wide, as Thwihli Thwahla held on for the win and clean sheet. Chiefs had a different approach in the second stanza as they looked to play quick balls behind the Royal AM defence and they found spaces, but were ultimately let down by the final pass. The visitors maintained the tempo of their attacks as the rain drizzled down but Royal AM remained threat on transitions, as they went to the halftime break with a narrow lead.
Kaizer Chiefs' refreshed squad under coach Arthur Zwane will come under a stern test when they clash against Royal AM.
It will be the sixth time for Amakhosi to kick off the campaign in that province where they have previously recorded four wins and a draw on opening days. Every time Chiefs start the season away in KwaZulu-Natal in the PSL era, they have enjoyed good results. Attention is now on the seven players Zwane signed to see if they can bring in the much-needed change at Naturena.

Sithebe had a half-chance in the 67th minute, turning sharply to get his shot off but without troubling Nyame. De Jong made the odd burst for Royal but what little danger came Bruce Bavuma’s way was expertly dealt with by the ‘keeper, as he demonstrated by brilliantly saving Nascimento’s rasping shot. Then, De Jong had a couple of half chances that the Chiefs defence dealt with comfortably. While Chiefs were not at their fluid best, considering it was the first time this line-up played a competitive match, it gave an indication that when the new additions fully integrate into the team as the season unfolds, a clinical edge will emerge that will see much of the skilful build-up play converted into goals, and points.

Dolly was presented with two chances to rescue something for Chiefs in the closing stages, but he failed to convert Billiat's 74th-minute corner at close range and missed the target once more in stoppage time after receiving the ball outside the box from Reeve Frosler. There were a couple of wayward efforts at both ends in the opening stages of the second half, with Yusuf Maart's long-range strike clearing the crossbar before De Jong and Khetukuthula Ndlovu failed to trouble Bvuma in the opposition goal with their respective shots. The Soweto giants looked to respond, with Khama Billiat springing a counter in the 12th minute and finding Keagan Dolly, who forced a save out of Patrick Nyame with a strike from range. The goal arrived in the opening minute of the match when Ricardo Nascimento capitalised on slack defending from Amakhosi to pounce from close range and put three points on the board for the KZN outfit. Chiefs failed to deal with a corner and Nascimento made them pay when he slotted home from close range to get Malesela's side up and running. The hosts couldn't have asked for a better start in Durban as they hit the front in the opening minute of the game.
