Nottingham Forest produced one of the strangest corner routines we've seen during Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

The clip has gone viral and fans still don't fully understand what was attempted. As the corner is taken, five Forest players dart into the penalty area and attempt to challenge for the ball. Forest had a corner at 1-0 down and decided to leave every single player outside the box as it was taken.

Transfer News: Newcastle United pull plug on James Maddison move (The Hard Tackle)

Newcastle United have reportedly pulled the plug on their pursuit of 25-year-old Leicester City playmaker James Maddison.

And, with no fresh bids in sight, it appears Newcastle have withdrawn their interest in the English international and are exploring other avenues. Leicester City are reluctant to lose their Player of the Year from last season and are said to be holding out for around £60 million to even consider a sale. Newcastle have been heavily linked with a transfer for the Leicester City midfielder over the last couple of weeks.

Eddie Howe's ruthless Allan Saint-Maximin words as Newcastle ... (ChronicleLive)

Newcastle United got their season off to a winning start following a 2-0 victory against Nottingham Forest and Eddie Howe was still urging his side forward ...

Knowing they had fitness to finish the game strongly, unlike the equivalent fixture a year ago, the players looked to double their advantage and that approach was soon rewarded. Lascelles will have had fellow centre-back Sven Botman very much in mind with that comment, but Newcastle's most expensive ever summer signing was eased in from the bench against Forest and had to make do with a late cameo as a substitute. The campaign may have only just kicked off, but that stunning strike is already a goal of the season contender and it gave Newcastle lift off. In fact, there were only three survivors - Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson - from that starting line-up in the XI on Saturday. As captain Jamaal Lascelles put it in his pre-match programme notes: "I've never been part of such a talented squad." "I'm very proud of the team for having such a brilliant run towards the end of the season but, in my mind, it's gone and we can't look back to that time," he told reporters. Rather than looking to protect what they had, as Newcastle had been programmed to do for so long, the hosts went in search for a killer second and Callum Wilson sealed all three points with a clever finish in the 78th minute.

With his graceful movement and incisive passing, the 24-year-old might well be the best player to have worn the black-and-white shirt for quite some time. Matt Targett might not have been a headline summer signing, but in conjunction with Kieran Trippier, the re-signed full-back caps off an impressive rearguard. It can be dangerous to make predictions after one week of the season, but on all available evidence, this is a Newcastle side that looks more than capable of pushing its way into the top half of the table. Steve Bruce was freely admitting he was ‘trying to keep things ticking over’ as the Magpies treaded water, and performances on the pitch veered from the disappointing to disastrous. With Mike Ashley still at the helm, summer investment had been largely non-existent, with Newcastle’s only transfer business last summer being the conversion of Joe Willock’s loan move into a permanent deal. This time around, we are barely into August, and they already have their first win on the board.

Newcastle United secured a 2-0 opening day win against Nottingham Forest at St James's Park – here are some moments you may have missed from the match.

It was the Swiss international’s third goal of 2022 and a near carbon copy of his goal of the month winning strike against Burnley in February 2019. Callum Wilson had scored in each of his two opening day fixtures for Newcastle, both against West Ham United. So when a chance fell his way from a low Joelinton cross, he didn’t let it go to waste as he delicately clipped the ball into the far corner of the goal with the outside of his boot to make it three from three on the opening day in black and white. Following a goalless but dominant first half for Newcastle, Wright took to the field during the break and was met by a warm reception by the home supporters as he experienced a Newcastle match as a fan for the first time in decades. And Pope was in for an easy afternoon on his competitive debut for the club as he kept a clean sheet without having to make a save. And the Premier League season opener saw the pre-match Wor Flags display thank Wright for his years of service with a ‘thank you Derek’ banner on display in the East Stand. The 22-year-old had to settle for a place on the bench as Dan Burn and Fabian Schar continued their defensive partnership that proved so formidable for Newcastle during the second half of last season.

Newcastle United are reportedly looking to steal a march on Premier League rival Wolverhampton Wanderers for Valencia attacker Goncalo Guedes.

Having said that, Newcastle will have to get their act together quickly to sign Guedes. According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have already made an official offer of more than £27 million for the Portuguese attacker, with Valencia prepared to accept the proposal. Guedes could be an excellent solution owing to his versatility to play across the frontline. Despite sorting out their defence earlier this summer, the situation is far from ideal for Newcastle, to say the least. However, the West Midlands outfit are not the only Premier League club linked with Guedes this summer. With his contract set to expire at the end of next season, there has been speculation over his future as Los Che look to get out of a difficult financial situation. Guedes, who burst onto the scene at Benfica aged just 17, helped the Eagles win three straight Primeira Liga titles, as well as two League Cups and one Taca de Portugal. His exploits earned him a move to PSG in January 2017 for £25 million.
