The VP of Ad Sales for BET, Riley Irving is taking her business sense and advocacy skills to her role as NBA star Kyrie Irving's agent.
“We learned to communicate and collaborate, but we just started with that foundation, that we have each other for life.” It's about hustle and being prepared, she says, then the opportunity will come to you. Often people tell Riley that she was “lucky enough” to end up in her role, but it’s not about that, she points out. “I didn’t pester him, and he didn't pester me,” she says. Kyrie, whom Riley Irving affectionately refers to as her bonus son, approached her about two years ago to have a conversation about athletes and the sports industry. This was often referring to being able to make space and advocate for Black consumers who were not being treated fairly in terms of “the way they spend, in comparison to how often they are disrespected in their purchasing power,” she says. She tries to focus more on a deal is the right move for an athlete and their family, asking: Does that contract really make sense for you? “As the years passed, I began to better understand what it meant when colleagues would say, We are the voice for the people that cannot speak on their behalf,” she says. “It was between BET and Hot 97,” she says. Because in many negative instances, she says, it’s more about a transaction and less about how this affects you, as the athlete. And when Riley Irving—the only Black woman currently representing an active NBA player— accepted the offer to become his agent, they both “won the championship,” she says. “We also learned to be a voice for those who don’t have a voice.”
Mississippi grand jury declines to indict Carolyn Bryant Donham over death of Black teenager nearly 70 years ago.
Despite being abducted at gunpoint from a family home by Roy Bryant and Milam, Till identified himself to the men, she claimed. Till’s battered, disfigured body was found days later in a river, where it was weighted down with a heavy metal fan. She accused him of making lewd comments and grabbing her while she worked alone at a family store in Money, Mississippi.
Carolyn Bryant Donham had accused the 14-year-old boy of whistling at her in 1955. His killing helped galvanize the civil rights movement.
But in December, federal officials said the inquiry had been closed and prosecutors could not pursue perjury charges, citing the statute of limitations and Ms. Donham’s denial of ever changing her story. There are varying accounts of what happened, but a witness had said that Emmett whistled at Ms. Donham. The latest wrinkle on Tuesday could very well be one of the last. In June, relatives of Emmett and researchers into his murder discovered an unserved arrest warrant against Ms. Donham connected to the murder. A Justice Department investigation into the case had been reopened after a historian claimed in 2017 that Ms. Donham had recanted the most salacious parts of her account, including that the teenager had grabbed her and made sexually suggestive remarks. In the summer of 1955, Emmett traveled to the Mississippi Delta from Chicago; that August, he walked into a store run by Ms. Donham and her husband, Roy Bryant, to buy candy.
A grand jury in Leflore County, Mississippi, declined to indict Carolyn Bryant Donham, a white woman whose accusations led to the lynching of Emmett Till.
Till, 14, of Chicago, was visiting family when he entered a store in Money, Mississippi, where Donham, then 21, was working. The warrant, dated Aug. 29, 1955, was found inside a file folder that had been placed in a box at the courthouse, said Circuit Clerk Elmus Stockstill, who certified the document as genuine. The jury's decision means Donham will most likely not ever be prosecuted for her role in Till's death.

When a federal case was presented in 2007, another Leflore County grand jury decided not to indict Donham on a charge of manslaughter. The discovery of the warrant also ignited a search for Donham, who is now in her late 80s and whose whereabouts have been kept secret by her family. Till’s body was found attached to a 75-pound fan. “The murder of Emmett Till remains an unforgettable tragedy in this country and the thoughts and prayers of this nation continue to be with the family of Emmett Till,” Richardson said in the news release. Till-Mobley’s decision and fervent telling of her son’s story to reporters reignited the civil rights movement. “There was probable cause for her arrest.”

Donham told investigators that Till didn’t speak when her then-husband brought the teenager to her, but in her memoir she wrote that she told her husband that Till wasn’t the person who had harassed her, to which Till replied, “Yes, it was me.” In June, a 70-year-old warrant for the arrest of Donham on charges of kidnapping dated Aug. 29, 1955, was found in a Mississippi courthouse. Till was a 14-year-old boy visiting family in Mississippi when Bryant and Milam fatally lynched him, one of many matches that lit the fire of the civil rights movement.
