WATCH: LaLiga Santander season begins with tricky tests for title ... (Independent Online)

Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, last season's top three, will not be able to ease into this new campaign, as they have some tricky tests ...

For them, and for all the clubs of LaLiga Santander, getting off to a winning start would be priceless. Real Madrid then begin their title defence on Sunday night, doing so on the south coast away at UD Almería. It’ll be a battle of champions, as UD Almería secured promotion as the LaLiga SmartBank winners last season. So, Atleti know this will be a battling start to 2022/2023. Girona FC cannot be underestimated, though, especially as they have recruited well by bringing in players such as MLS top scorer Taty Castellanos to complement the veteran Uruguayan Cristhian Stuani. After Friday night’s opener, there are three more matches on Saturday. RC Celta host RCD Espanyol in what will be Diego Martínez’s first official game in charge of the Catalan club, so that should be an interesting tactical tussle. There is then some thrilling Monday night football in store, with three matches taking place then.

SPORT. Is Real Madrid capable of retaining the title? Can FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid or Sevilla FC topple them to the top of the table?

This will be his third spell in the San Mames dugout, and he will be looking to replicate the successes of the past. For much of last season, the Andalusians were Real Madrid’s main rivals in the title race, only to fall away into fourth towards the end of the season. Meanwhile, Atlético de Madrid have several “new” familiar faces, as the return of Álvaro Morata and Saúl Ñiguez will give coach Diego Simeone more depth in his squad.

Where can you watch LaLiga 2022/23 games on US TV? Television ... (AS English)

The LaLiga season gets underway on Friday, as Real Madrid bid to defend their crown after winning a record 35th Spanish league title in 2021/22.

At the time of writing, LaLiga’s financial-fair-play rules had prevented the cash-strapped-yet-big-spending Catalans from registering any of their five close-season purchases: Andreas Christensen, Frank Kessié, Jules Koundé, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha. It doesn’t appear to be possible to watch ESPN+ on the Disney+ app. As part of the deal, ESPN will also show some Spanish second division games each week.

The competition’s official new name will be announced in August. Once the agreement with Banco Santander is finalized and with the start of the 2023/24 season, LaLiga and EA Sports will sign a five-year partnership deal. In April 2021, LaLiga’s main sponsors reported: “LaLiga and Banco Santander have renewed their collaboration agreement for two more years, with the option of extending it for a third, until the 2023-2024 season”. After making the decision not to extend the agreement for another year, Banco Santander will no longer have the naming rights for the top tow tiers of the Spanish football league once the 2022/23 campaign ends. Along with the announcement of the termination of the agreement with Banco Santander, came the news about the new sponsor.

LaLiga: Talking points for each club going into 2022-23 season ... (Firstpost)

Spanish top division, LaLiga, kicks off on Friday night with Osasuna hosting Sevilla and Real Madrid enter as defending champions.

The two South Americans will aim to form a partnership capable of keeping the promoted side in Spain’s top flight. After surviving the drop by a hair’s breadth last season, Real Mallorca are focused on repeating the trick. Real Madrid start the Spanish league season overflowing with confidence that they can retain the domestic title despite Barcelona spending big to add top talent. It’ll be interesting to see if he can link up well with new winger Portu. That’s the main question being asked in the city of Cadiz. The club’s strong campaign last season has given them hope they can further consolidate their position in LaLiga, with the club working on improving their stadium and hoping to reach 20,000 season tickets sold.

LALIGA PREVIEW - Big-spending Barcelona and Real Madrid ought ... (Daily Mail)

PETE JENSON IN SPAIN: The two juggernauts of Spanish football used to roll over the rest of their rivals and dominate the domestic competition.

It will be the league of the big two, but also the league of some of the biggest personalities in football: Hazard, Isco, Gattuso, Emery, Lewandowski, Vinicius and maybe even Bernardo Silva. The window hasn't closed yet and for all that Barça are still trying to register players they have not given up hope on selling Frenkie de Jong and bringing in the Manchester City midfielder. Simeone has also added the defensive quality and positional flexibility of Axel Witsel and Nahuel Molina. It might not be very exciting but they do feel like Simeone players. Manuel Pellegrini worked miracles last season as they won the Spanish Cup. He will do well to match those feats without the investment to push on. How many summers can you sell your best players and not start to slide? All those laughing at that question should remember how incredulous it would have seemed at the start of last season to suggest they could come within 90 minutes of the Champions League final. Sevilla, without Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos, might be harder to score against this season but with Isco they should be better to watch and more full of goals. Unai Emery has worked miracles at Villarreal in the last two season's delivering a Champions League semi-final and a Europa League, now can his team be a title candidate? The failure to sign Cesar Azpilicueta leaves them without a first-class right back for yet another season, and there is still no real replacement for Sergio Busquets. That means he is stuck with Alvaro Morata, Joao Felix, Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa and Matheus Cunha. It could be worse. The only doubt is what happens if Karim Benzema gets injured. Or can Diego Simeone, going into his eleventh year as Atletico Madrid coach, rival the big two? and Valencia could face a relegation dogfight

Unlike Messi, Ronaldinho did not earn plaudits for scoring incredible numbers of goals, more that he was generally a scorer of beautiful goals in important moments. Messi scored six goals in 17 LaLiga appearances for the Blaugrana in 2005-06, as well as notching his first Champions League goal in a 5-0 win over Panathinaikos at the Camp Nou. It must be said that the last time Messi was not on what was then a 50-man shortlist for the Ballon d'Or, he was just 18 years old, and had been just 17 when he netted his first goal for Barca. Of course, it was not especially a surprise. Lampard was more of a net botherer though, scoring 13 goals and recording an impressive 18 assists in 38 league games for the Blues on their march to the title. By comparison, Messi won last year's Ballon d'Or after scoring 30 goals in 35 LaLiga games in 2020-21, as well as three in the Copa del Rey and five in the Champions League for Barca.
