LIVE | Rabada, Nortje continue after lunch as Proteas eye more ... (News24)

South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada once again proved his worth, removing openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley after England had been sent in to bat by Proteas ...

Left-hander Lees was loose there, and he's thrown his hands at that. He's looking to be positive wherever he can, and he's kept England going here despite the wickets that have been falling regularly. Nortje gets rid of Stokes with the last ball of the session! Ollie Pope was the lone batsman to hold firm, with 51 not out. South Africa will be very pleased with the work they have done today. It had ben predicted, and now the rain comes down at Lord's. That became 116-6 shortly afterwards when wicketkeeper Ben Foakes played on to express quick Nortje for six. Jonny Bairstow had made 106 and an unbeaten 114 during England's most recent Test, a seven-wicket win over India at Edgbaston last month. Root reviewed Indian umpire Nitin Menon's decision, but replays indicated the ball would have clipped the leg stump. Spearhead fast bowler Rabada, 27, had left-hander Lees caught behind for five and removed struggling fellow opener Crawley for nine after he nicked a ball that nipped away low to Aiden Markram at second slip. All of those victories had been achieved by chasing down targets in the fourth innings, something that cannot happen in this match after South Africa captain Dean Elgar won the toss and fielded on a green-tinged pitch under overcast skies. But that was still long enough for the Proteas' pace attack to rip through England's top order.

England v South Africa: first Test, day two – live! (The Guardian)

Over-by-over report: Will South Africa keep the pressure on the hosts or can Ben Stokes's side recover? Find out with our writers.

55th over: South Africa 192-4 ( vd Dussen 19, Jansen 1 ) Fully distracted by my daughter reading out the Royal Family’s A level results, but can reliably say that was great ball by Stokes. The lead creeps up to fifty. Maharaj hits two boundaries in three balls off Broad, one an edge through the slips that has Broad down on his haunches, the other cuts a pie. His last ball nearly squeaks through the gap between Jansen’s bat and pad. 70th over: South Africa 236-6 ( Jansen 14, Maharaj 18) Maharaj and Jansen rather milk Potts here, a four each as the lead creeps up to 71. Seven off Leach including a lanky loft by Jansen to the long-on boundary. What else would you put in the mix? I think the venn diagram would be interesting! He ducks safely under the final bouncer and that is stumps! That felt like a mini epic – defiantly South Africa’s day but endlessly entertaining by England who threw themselves at it. It is a mixture of things, confidence after playing enough Test cricket to learn through those games, and belief from performances.” That’s it from us for today – thanks for sticking with our new system, quirks and all.

Meanwhile, Anrich Nortje (3 for 63) and Marco Jansen (2 for 30) claimed the rest five wickets for South Africa. The guests had bundled out the hosts for 165 runs in the first innings, thanks to Rabada's five-wicket haul (5 for 52). England had earlier bundled out South Africa for 326 runs but not before the latter could take a 161-run first-innings lead. South Africa had resumed their innings on Friday at the score of 289 for 7, with a 124-run lead over England. South Africa's Keshav Maharaj had dismissed Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope to put England in trouble. Overnight battter Marco Jansen was dismissed by Stuart Broad on 48 runs, while Kagiso Rabada had departed only on the third ball of the day on 3 runs. Earlier, Anrich Nortje had dismissed Jonny Bairstow, Alex Lees and Ben Foakes in quick succession to effectively take the game away from England. Later, Lungi Ngidi dismissed Joe Root cheaply and Nortje made things tougher for the hosts. Lungi Ngidi also claimed a wicket as England batters could not go past South Africa's first innings total.

England were unable to dig in when needed and a high-quality South Africa attack had too much for them. On not having played red-ball cricket in the lead-up: “I don’t want to make excuses. England v South Africa: first Test, day three – live! (The Guardian)

11th over: England 37-1 (Lees 11, Pope 5) Rabada is generating extra lift. One ball to Pope angles in sharply and takes the thigh pad for four byes.

When he was playing cricket, apartheid was not really on the radar of the rest of the sporting world - but more importantly, he plied his trade in Test cricket against exactly the same set of nations as now. He’ll have a tougher time bowling to Root who is arguably the best player of spin in the world (please don’t @ me sub-continental fans). 15th over: England 49-2 (Lees 21, Root 2) Lees gets a boundary but he’s not in control, jabbing at a Ngidi lifter that squirts through the gap between third slip and gully. OK, there’s a long way to go but then England are a long way behind and they’ve just lost their best batter. 20th over: England 60-3 (Lees 27, Bairstow 1) Three from that Maharaj as he looks to attack and snatch another scalp. 21st over: England 64-3 (Lees 30, Bairstow 2) Nortje is into the action and replaces Ngidi. That’s a result of his inability to work the single as often as he’d like. Lees collects a single at the top of the over and signs off with a three with a conventional sweep towards fine leg. He’s swinging with all he’s got to a full Nortje delivery that must have blown the hats off of spectators in the stands. “Their intensity of South Africa has put England in a terrible position,” says Ian Ward on Sky Sports as the players come back from their drinks. [playing a Test match, at the same venue](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2012/aug/17/england-south-africa-live-cricket). Of course, the visitors were tremendous but England are right under the pump in this series with the Second Test starting on Thursday in Manchester.

Jimmy Anderson will also be raring to go with the new ball if the English tail wounds up early. Hello and welcome to day 2 of the Test match. However, that was in fourth innings of all the games, while chasing. Popular gadgets including laptop, tablet and mobile specifications, features, prices, comparison. South Africa were relentless in the first match at Lord’s as their bowling attack tormented the England batting order and will now hope to take a 2-0 lead. Pope completed a 69-ball fifty but, with the very last delivery of the session, Nortje squared up Stokes to have the all-rounder caught in the slips for 20, leaving England on 100-5 at the interval. Rabada, reflecting on the styles of South Africa's four quicks, said: "I think we've got some pace, we've got bounce, we've got guys who can swing it, guys who can bowl quick bumpers, so in terms of a pace attack I think we have all the ingredients to be a formidable one." The Proteas will be looking to wrap up the innings as soon as possible and come out to bat. But he was bowled for a five-ball duck by Nortje as he tried to drive on the up, with England slumping to 55-4. Day 1 review: South Africa quicks Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje did the damage as England slumped to 116-6 before heavy rain forced an early end to the opening day of the first Test at Lord's on Wednesday. "The one thing when you are on wickets with lots of assistance, you don't want the bowler to think he can put it in the same area and get results," he added. South Africa will be riding high on their performance on day 1.

James Anderson looks to drive it away but the ball swings away and beats the outside edge of Jimmy's blade. He credits Ollie Pope for the way he played in testing conditions and sarcastically adds that he wants to win the toss in the next game. Kagiso Rabada to Jack Leach, Back of a length, around off. Adds that all the captains before him have also been criticized for the way the team has played and says that it is a part and parcel of the game. He says that is special to contribute to a team win and adds that to do it in Lords’s is pretty special. Coming to the ball - This is very full and swings away late from middle. They have managed to stop the juggernaut of this strong England Test team and have continued to shine in the longest format of the game. It's been a surreal performance from the visitors, and with this win, they have taken a 1-0 lead in this 3-match Test series. They had put England under the pump after the first session and made sure to capitalize on that moment in the second session as well. Talks about his captaincy and says that it depends on his gut feeling and the move to bring Keshav Maharaj was his gut feeling and then Anrich Nortje bowled with the speed of light. Zak Crawley was the first one to depart and after that wickets kept falling in a heap. Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen then put on a fiery stand of 72 runs and kept South Africa in the driving seat.

That would mean South Africa would be reduced to three quicks, Marco Jansen taking the new ball with Kagiso Rabada, and a lot of work for Maharaj if England can see off the opening 30 overs. Crawley at third man thinks he has a chance of getting to the ball before it bounces but it looked all but impossible. I was about to write in curmudgeonly fashion that the wickets of Maharaj and Erwee had only emboldened England in their embrace of leg theory for the tail instead of the orthodox line they reverted to for Verreynne successfully. The next ball is pitched further up, in the slot, and he drives for two then tickles a single off his toes down to fine leg. Root goes up on his toes to cover the bounce of a back of a length delivery from Ngidi, gliding it late fine of point for a single. The catchers retreat for Root, leaving only a slip and he gets off the mark with a clip through cover. The bowler ramps it up to 91mph, targets the Bairstow gate and the stumps with a full length, pace and inswing. There is a big gap between point and mid-off but Ngidi only goes full enough occasionally and Lees slices his drive off the final ball too close to point to ruin the maiden. Spurious review from South Africa when Maharaj hits Stokes on the pad when sweeping but given the angle from over the wicket it would have had to turn a mile to hit the stumps, which it didn't. South Africa won a toss that was vital to win but from that moment onwards their bowlers have had England by the throat with withering pace and relentless precision. It takes a great deal of trust from Ben and the leaders of the side but also from him as well. This is what it was like for England’s middle order when they faced up to Anrich Nortje on the third and what proved to be the final afternoon at Lord’s.

But Nortje finished a strong morning showing for South Africa by jagging one away to find Stokes' outside edge and end a minor recovery. Root has actually been usurped as England's most in-form Test batter, with Bairstow coming into the series on the back of a stellar run against New Zealand and India. Having declined another lbw shout that ball-tracking showed would have just clipped the top of Pope's leg stump, Nitin Menon raised his finger in the affirmative to the politest of appeals against Root. Joe Root was lbw for 8, a marginal decision backed up by DRS in the impressive Marco Jansen's second over, and Jonny Bairstow lost his middle stump to Nortje as England slumped to 55 for 4. Alex Lees got away with one ambitious swipe that flew over the slip cordon but fell in the same over, wafting away from his body to be caught behind. England's most-productive stand was 45 added for the fifth wicket between Pope and Stokes, the only two batters to get into double-figures.
