Manchester City have started their title defence with two wins out of two. Eddie Howe will hope Newcastle can give Pep Guardiola's side their biggest test ...

— [fuboTV](https://www.fubo.tv/stream/ca/epl/?irad=1372819&irmp=1131770&sharedid=live_blog-TSN-Match-Premier_League_Leeds_United_vs._Chelsea) [Optus Sport](https://bit.ly/3Jf30UC) Kalvin Phillips and Cole Palmer have each overcome niggles and can be expected to take places on the City bench alongside new signing Sergio Gomez. Fitness doubts around Emil Krafth and Matt Targett give Howe decisions to make at full-back, where Kieran Trippier's versatility could see him fielded at left-back. Fresh from their Saudi takeover, Newcastle were beaten 4-0 and 5-0 by City last season but the optimism and momentum around Eddie Howe’s side continues to build. After a sensible rather than outlandish summer in the transfer market, they can provide the champions with their toughest test of the season so far.

You have to live this experience to know how amazing we’ve done for five years and how difficult it will be. The Premier League is so difficult for everyone. But City failed to turn their momentum into a winner in the closing stages as they blinked for the first time in their title defence. "For the neutral, I'm sure it was an incredible game but we needed something from the game and the players deserved it." The Magpies have not splashed the cash of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund to the extent expected in the transfer window, but had the champions on the ropes through goals from Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier. Silva was recalled to Guardiola's starting line-up for the first time in the Premier League this season with the midfielder linked with a move to Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

Man City salvage point against Newcastle in epic encounter (BeSoccer EN)

Man City came from two goals down in the second half to draw 3-3 at Newcastle in an enthralling Premier League contest at St James' Park.

Both teams went in search of a winner, but neither side were able to find one. [Saint-Maximin](https://www.besoccer.com/player/a-saint-maximin-190153/) was a thorn in Man City's side all half with his runs and he squared a ball for Miguel Almiron who somehow failed to keep his shot down. De Bruyne once again showed his incredible vision to play a precise pass to However, Newcastle went in leading at half-time as Wilson scored after being given the ball by Saint-Maximin in the box and then beating Ederson with a lovely finish. However, that setback ended up sparking Man City into action. The linesman erroneously flagged for offside and the VAR corrected it to give the home side their equaliser. De Bruyne forced a fine stop out of Pope from a free-kick while Ederson prevented Saint-Maximin from equalising for the hosts. [Gundogan](https://www.besoccer.com/news/player/ilkay-gundogan-44874) put Man City ahead. De Bruyne nearly made it two after 10 minutes when he was one on one with the keeper, but Pope denied him. De Bruyne picked him out with a lovely pass and he headed past Nick Pope to silence St James' Park. Gundogan had given Man City a fifth minute lead, but Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson scored to give Newcastle a 2-1 advantage at the interval. The match was end to end, played at breakneck speed and a draw was the right outcome.

Nathan Ake injury highlights an unexpected defensive issue for Man ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City put on a defensive horror show against Newcastle after Nathan Ake left the field.

The shaky defensive display will have concerned Guardiola greatly, but thankfully for City they don't face teams as aggressive and pumped up by a vociferous home crowd as Newcastle every week. Another all-at-sea moment at the back resulted in Keiran Trippier’s superb free-kick, and truthfully a 3-1 lead was the least Newcastle deserved. City did get their act together and soon drew level through quickfire goals from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva, and in the end there were positives to take. This season though he has started all three of City’s league games as well as the Community Shield, and was arguably better than any of his counterparts. City left the north-east with a point on Sunday after a thrilling 3-3 draw. Then came the turning point, and in truth it wasn’t an expected or predictable one.

Man City fan reactions to Phil Foden touch on wider Guardiola ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City fans were divided over whether Phil Foden should have passed to Erling Haaland against Newcastle.

Another element is that it does not feel like there has been a significant contribution from any winger at this early stage of the season. There has been enough evidence already so far this season to at least consider the question. Maybe, but what felt like a specific plan to counter West Ham on the opening day by moving full-backs inside and playing basically within the width of the penalty areas has been seen subsequently. Competition for places is fierce in the City side and players have to justify their position in every week. [Foden](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/phil-foden) had shown a forward's greed against Bournemouth in choosing not to roll the ball sideways for the No.9 to score an easy goal, against Newcastle it was far less clear: the 22-year-old was running at full tilt and his sight to [Haaland](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/erling-haaland) was blocked by the Newcastle defender that was trying to stop him getting there first. with some convinced [Pep Guardiola](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/pep-guardiola) was fuming at him as a result just as others thought he was [hooked at half-time last week](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-city-fc) because of it.

'He's a perfect fit' - ex-City duo laud Haaland impact (Manchester City FC)

“His mentality is fantastic and provided he can steer clear of injury, I think he’s going to score an unbelievable number of goals for City.” “I love his mentality because as well as his undoubted physicality, when he scores his goals, you can see him waving his arms and making little gestures to anyone who is doubting him. “I’ve had little discussions with Alfie, his dad, and I just knew he would fly in this league because he’s got the physique and power plus, he is direct, aggressive and he’s almost a throwback to the traditional number nine of yesteryear combined with the modern striker because he has the attributes of both.

Pep Guardiola insists Man City tactic is not redundant despite Erling ... (Manchester Evening News)

Erling Haaland does not always play as an out-and-out striker for City.

Julian Alvarez will come into the team, a player even more suited to playing a false nine role if the match circumstances dictate. Sergio Aguero's injury struggles in 2020/21 forced Guardiola to set his side up without a recognised striker, and that was the case again last season after City failed in their attempts to sign Harry Kane. He had the goal, he had another one or two chances.

Ansu Fati fabulous for Barcelona, Man City stressed by Newcastle ... (ESPN)

It's critical Xavi gets it right for Barcelona on the pitch, and let's just say he did it this weekend. PLUS: talking points galore around Europe.

But it looks like Napoli have managed to reload on the fly between Kvaratskhelia, Gio Simeone and [Giacomo Raspadori](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/271679/Giacomo-Raspadori) up front and Leo Ostigaard and Min-Jae Kim at the back, while also cutting the wage bill and bringing in some much needed transfer funds. [Sadio Mane](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/169797/Sadio-Mané) who is, you know, pretty good. From Atletico's point of view, there were some disappointing individual performances (Joao Felix, [Marcos Llorente](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/206474/Marcos-Llorente) and [Nahuel Molina](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/164826/Nahuel-Molina), with his silly red card, above all) and the result obviously stings (Villarreal are a direct opponent in the race for top four), but there were also encouraging signs that the back three can hold up. [Erling Haaland](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/253989/Erling-Haaland) hit the post and forced a tremendous one-on-one save from the excellent [Nick Pope](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/161715/Nick-Pope) before he scored to make it 2-1. [Monza](/soccer/team?id=4007), and you expect Neapolitan schoolchildren to learn both the pronunciation and the spelling of his name. Martin Odegaard, who scored twice, has found his feet and [Oleksandr Zinchenko](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/217482/Oleksandr-Zinchenko), playing fullback the Pep Guardiola way -- coming inside and playmaking -- offers a different dimension entirely. And if Leeds' forwards weren't running north-south at every occasion, [Kalidou Koulibaly](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/150312/Kalidou-Koulibaly) likely wouldn't have gotten two yellow cards for pulling back opponents. Stones didn't have a great game and [Ruben Dias](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/234878/Rúben-Dias) has been inconsistent in recent weeks. [Manchester City](/soccer/team?id=382) were 3-1 down against [Newcastle United](/soccer/team?id=361) at a rocking St James' Park, and it could have been worse, if the referee had given a penalty or [John Stones](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/157974/John-Stones)' collision with [Fabian Schar](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/179233/Fabian-Schär). And yes, [Kyle Walker](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/129358/Kyle-Walker) had a torrid afternoon against [Allan Saint-Maximin](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/193281/Allan-Saint-Maximin), but the good news is he only plays him twice a year. [Ferran Torres](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/265869/Ferran-Torres) started in his place) and especially Ansu Fati, effectively moving to a 3-3-4 formation. At this stage, you assume he's going nowhere because with Nico having joined [Valencia](/soccer/team?id=94) on loan, there's nobody else to provide an alternative to Busquets (and no, [Franck Kessie](http://espnfc.com/player/_/id/194711/Franck-Kessié) would have to reinvent himself to play that role.)
