'The mispronunciation of African names is lazy at this point,' one TikToker wrote after hearing how Amandla pronounces her Xhosa name.
South Africans across the country have gathered on TikTok to discuss a video of American actress Amandla Stenberg pronouncing her Xhosa name during an interview. She can pronounce her name however she likes. Itโs her name .โ And yes, even Amandla and their parents are guilty of this laziness [#amandlastenberg] [โฌ original sound โ Misa Narrates] [@misanarrates] [#stitch]with @Soph mispronunciation of African names is lazy at this point. South Africans are not happy with the way Amandla Stenberg pronounces her Xhosa name.
Based on the debut novel by Angie Thomas who wrote it in response to the murder of Oscar Grant, with heart the film explores police brutality, systemic racism ...
And a sixth-grader gave it 5 More than a decade on, it serves as a reminder of just how cute baby Amandla was. But if there's one good thing we can say about the film, it's that it's earnest. Set in 1944, Where Hands Touch follows a biracial girl Leyna as she begins a romance with Lutz, a member of the Hitler Youth and the son of an SS officer. Remember the film Bubble Boy, you know the one with Jake Gyllenhaal? The cast is good too. But for the most part, it just means I gorge on each and every one of their movies as they hit the theatres, listen to Stenberg's ASMR [feature](/tag/feature/) on loop, and slip them into whatever [best-dressed red carpet](https://www.russh.com/the-2021-met-gala-red-carpet/) we're covering. Although the love story feels a touch melodramatic, you can't deny that it's definitely moving. A bunch of rich kids are partying in one of their many mansions while waiting out a storm. Stenberg has taken part in their own fair share of YA adaptations, but The Hate U Give is by far the best. And what better time to rifle through their movie history than following the release of If Bodies Bodies Bodies was a song it would be Frank Ocean's "Super Rich Kids".
When Amandla gave a background of the origins of her name, she butchered her own name as well as the pronunciation of 'Xhosa'.
โThis is where naming people is important if you are taking names from other languages and you donโt have the tongue for them, nor will or interest to learn to pronounce it properly, to insist that they are pronounced properly, particularly when those names are from the people of those languages are often butchered. She explained how important it is to understand the origins of names, and have the will and interest to know how to properly pronounce names the way the people of those languages and tribes do. Since the interview went viral, Stenberg has received a lot of backlash for the way in which she pronounces her name, and many people have shared the same sentiments that she does not have the tongue to pronounce her name correctly, nor does she care enough to learn how to better pronounce it.
