England v South Africa LIVE: Cricket score and second Test updates ... (The Independent)

England do still fancy their short ball tactic to the tail, Anderson twice bouncing Rabada in the first three balls of his over. Stuart Broad, South Africa 108/8 (38) England continue to persist with the short ball tactic, but an end-of-spell James Anderson may not be their best exponent of it. Another good period for England, with two-in-two for James Anderson moving them closer to wrapping this South Africa innings up. South Africa may have a dart now with both Broad and Anderson sniffing a five-for. Is this the right ploy? A short ball from Broad fails to get up, sending it slamming into the scapula of a ducking Kagiso Rabada. [Ollie Robinson coming into the bowling attack](/sport/cricket/england-south-africa-robinson-crawley-second-test-b2151797.html) to add height and bounce, with Matthew Potts dropping out. The South African bowling attack ripped through the English batting line-up, led by the pace of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen, and England must come up with a way to stem the loss of wickets at Old Trafford this week if they are to level the three-Test series. Rabada has looked probably the most comfortable batter out there so far.

23rd over: South Africa 75-4 (Van der Dussen 16, Verreynne 2) Stokes tosses Leach the ball, and Van der Dussen spanks his first delivery to midwicket for four. Pitching on a length, he tempts Petersen to flash at one he could leave – p-r-e-s-s-u-r-e – and Root ouches the catch at one. Anyhow, back in the middle, Robinson, diddles Petersen again – that’s the tenth time he’s beaten the bat this morning – and he keeps doing it in the same way, a bit of bounce, a bit of nip, and an implacable line from on high. 26th over: South Africa 85-5 (Verreynne 12, Harmer 0) It’s Robinson to set us away again, and his loosner is wide and in the slot, so Verrenne makes sure to put it away through cover; Stokes charges after it, dives, hauls it away from the rope with his fingertips … Meantime, Broad is bouncing in, ceding a two and a one before beating Markram with one that dies before reaching Foakes and scuttling away for two more; two to midwicket follow, making that seven off the over. A no ball follows, turned to midwicket for two which makes three, and the partnership is now 25; these two don’t look comfy, but do look more so than the lads already out. Again Stokes goes short, again he pulls, and again he mistimes, youching his frustration as Foakes races left to pouch the skier. 32nd over: South Africa 94-7 (Verreynne 16, Rabada 0) Verreynne shovels a single into the off side, then Rabada ducks underneath a bouncer. 36th over: South Africa 103-7 (Verreynne 20, Rabada 6) Yup, here’s Broad, and Verreynne eases his loosener to third man for one, then Rabada turns the next ball to fine leg for one more. 28th over: South Africa 86-5 (Verreynne 12, Harmer 0) Robinson chucks in another no ball, but it’s the only run from another testing over. 30th over: South Africa 92-5 (Verreynne 16, Harmer 2) Harmer takes a single then Robinson finds another fine delivery, coming down from on high and landing on that length that has batters unsure whether to play forward or go back. Not sure why Anderson is bowling that length, and I’m sure he’d be thrilled to receive my advice on the subject.

Van der Dussen reviewed, but the decision stood, with DRS returning an umpire's call verdict on both impact and the top of the leg bail. One over later, van der Dussen was gone as well, to an each-way bet of an lbw decision from umpire Chris Gaffaney. Markram swung lustily across the line, but managed only a steepling top-edge to Foakes, running back towards fine leg. But Stokes, in a typically golden-armed intervention, had other ideas. OVER 22: SA 71/4 (Van der Dussen 12 Verreynne 2). The batsmen cross after Markram is lured on to the rocks by the siren song of Stokes's ...

Anderson dings Erwee in the goolies from round the wicket with one that keeps angling in from back of a length but his 'abdominal protector' does its job and he is not pole-axed in pain. Loose shot from Petersen, opening the face and jerking it wide of fourth slip for four as the ball straightened on him, much to his surprise. Stokes dives forward and to his right but the ball, barely an inch off the ground, bursts through his fingers. Petersen manages to poke a single through cover and get down the other end, and Robinson comes round to Elgar, kissing the edge as Elgar tried to play late. The next one climbs just as much but starts too wide and Petersen crashes it for four through point, despite Bairstow's acrobatic attempt to save the boundary. But after the latest deliberation, Broad pitches up down the corridor, the ball wobbles and Elgar thick-edges low to third slip where Bairstow tales a smart one-handed catch. It was wider, to, so he had to fetch it but could only top edge it as he was through his shot too quickly and sends a steepling chance over the keeper who runs back to his left to catch it. Petersen tries to adjust but he can't and ends up squared up, scissoring his bat down and nicking it off the part by the maker's name to first slip. England are going to squeeze one more over in before lunch and almost squeeze one more wicket. Robinson is given the opening over after lunch and starts with a half-volley that Verreynne, in a sleeveless sweater, eases through extra-cover for four. Harmer plays tip and run to cover and takes on Stokes' arm, beating it because the England captain's shy missed by a good 3ft. But the next ball deviates from Robinson's normally impeccable line and the width enables Verreynne to dab it down for four through third.

England vs South Africa: Proteas on back foot after Dean Elgar's ... (Firstpost)

England were as magnificent with the ball as wasteful they had been in the last Test, James Anderson striking inside the first five overs after Dean Elgar ...

South Africa were 77/5 at Lunch, and brief Rabada resistance aside largely continued in that vein afterwards, all out for a paltry 151. In fact, Robinson should have had Elgar excellently caught at short leg by Ollie Pope, but he sloppily overstepped, one of the three no balls he bowled in an otherwise excellent return to the side. South Africa’s decision to play two spinners no doubt influenced their decision to bat first, hoping for an advantage bowling last in the Test. Popular gadgets including laptop, tablet and mobile specifications, features, prices, comparison. England’s crumbly top order still found time for a wobble of their own – only serving to reinforce the idea that South Africa choosing to bat first was madness – but by the close, they were 111/3, only 40 behind and returning home forever grateful for Elgar’s decision in the morning. [Latest News](https://www.firstpost.com/), [Trending News](https://www.firstpost.com/author/trendingdesk), [Cricket News](https://www.firstpost.com/firstcricket/), [Bollywood News](https://www.firstpost.com/entertainment/bollywood), [India News](https://www.firstpost.com/category/india) and [Entertainment News](https://www.firstpost.com/category/entertainment) here. A team’s spinner getting the token last over before lunch is a well-worn cricketing trope, although here, South Africa managed to put a new and from their point of view almost certainly unwelcome twist on it, with Simon Harmer finding himself out in the middle with his pads on having to bat the last over of the session. Even with Robinson’s efforts largely unrewarded, England still found ways to prosper with the ball, Stuart Broad seemingly not smarting from the decision to take him off new ball duties – picking up the wickets of Elgar and Keegan Petersen coming in as the first change, to reduce South Africa to 40/3 inside the first 15 overs. Reprieved from having to immediately humiliate themselves with the bat, England were as magnificent with the ball as wasteful they had been in the last Test, James Anderson striking inside the first five overs and the side never really looking back from that moment. [Kagiso Rabada](https://www.firstpost.com/tag/kagiso-rabada), so they must have been delighted to find themselves in the field at the start of play, pouching catches behind the wicket and watching opposition batsmen forlornly trudge off the pitch instead of themselves. After a welcomingly slack bowling performance by England in the series’ opening Test at Lord’s last week, South Africa decided to reciprocate here with their own act of generosity, inserting themselves under cloudy Manchester skies and letting England’s bowlers have a good go at them. England were as magnificent with the ball as wasteful they had been in the last Test, James Anderson striking inside the first five overs after Dean Elgar asked them to bowl first.

England vs South Africa live: Score and latest updates from day two ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Harmer has a short leg and a a slip in for Foakes who made a Test century on debut against Sri Lanka's spinners in Galle.

Sarel Erwee was beaten several times in a skittish start and fell for three when Anderson (three for 32) drew one back in, well caught by Ben Foakes off the inside edge. Plenty of encouragement for Rabada with the movement and Bairstow in acceleration mode but he manages to get his bat on another hooping inducker and tickle it off his pads for a single. Rabada continues to make the ball reverse, swinging one on to Crawley's toes which he flicks fine for a single. Crawley is given a shorter one to start that nibbles back off the pitch (if nibbling can be done at 90mph, 'tears' perhaps?) and smacks him in the goolies. Bairstow pushes at it and nicks off to slip where Erwee takes it at the first attempt this time. But he gets his nose over the second ball and plays a solid backward defensive. After a couple of defensives, Stokes earns one in the slot and creams it through the covers for four. Foakes gives England the lead with an ugly swipe that chips off the inside edge and beats Verreynne on his left side as he made a vain headlong dive to grab it. And he beats Foakes with his first ball that zips past the edge as England's keeper prods tentatively forward. The knee is giving Stokes gyp but he is gritting his teeth and battling on. Harmer comes round the wicket to Foakes and slanting it across to off stump, inviting him to hit through the offside against the turn of the off-break. Foakes brings up the fifty partnership off Rabada, each contributing 25, with a midwicket flick for a single.

Ben Foakes gets the scoreboard moving with a late cut. 73rd over: England 257-5 (Stokes 63, Foakes 48) Nortje, majestic as he has been in this series, does keep the scoreboard ticking – maybe that’s why Elgar was reluctant to bring him on after lunch. The South Africans appeal for a stumping, but as with one or two of their reviews, you can smell the desperation.

Stokes made 103 on day two at Old Trafford, powering his team into a handsome lead of 169 before holing out six balls later.

A maiden, for now, with little to unduly trouble the taller of the left-handed South African openers. Elgar lunges his knee at the last ball of the day, making sure it will cause him no bother, and South Africa have survived through to stumps, 241 behind. The South African captain calmly pats a couple of shorter Leach balls away. Centurions Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes lead a pleased England off. When we were batting, the grass had burnt off a bit, so it was doing it slower, and then the odd one was just shooting through.” You don’t have the hardship behind you, all the trials and tribulations. “Once the ball got soft, it was actually quite hard to score. I got one in my first game and then had to wait a while - they are hard to come by. Can South Africa show some fight with the bat and battle back into this game? “It’s obviously not easy - they have got a fantastic bowling attack and it was tough out there. Stokes hit three sixes and six fours, but a strike-rate of 63.19 told a better story about the balance he was able to strike between power and poise. That just about concludes our coverage this evening of another excellent day for England.
